I'm a 44 year old white male who is from Georgia and lives in Atlanta. From the very first time I saw this commercial, it struck me as racist. I've seen it a lot since then, wondering if I could be misinterpreting it and if it could be interpreted in a non-racist way. So, I thought I'd see if it was on YouTube and see if anyone else had noticed it. Apparently I'm not alone. This is racist. I usually think people are overly sensitive about things, but I can't see this as anything but racist.

I have since spoken to some people who know the people in this company and THEY said they thought it was racially motivated, because they knew those people.

It's a mindset and a subtle use of imagery and certain words. The people who made this commercial obviously used that to send a message without directly saying it out loud. If someone complains, they can just say that they were making a play on the term monkey wrench, even though that makes no sense in the context of this commercial.

If Superior Plumbing wanted to imply any racism, they would have used a black chimpanzee, not an orange orangutan. The etymology of the phrase, "It's so simple, even a monkey can do it" dates back thousands of years. Blacks used the phrase in Africa just as Asians did in Southeast Asia...where there are monkeys. Though an orangutan is no a "monkey", it is easier to train and handle for a commercial that requires "human-like" characterization. Nothing is racist about the commercial.

If Superior Plumbing wanted to imply any racism, they would have used a black chimpanzee, not an orange orangutan. The etymology of the phrase, "It's so simple, even a monkey can do it" dates back thousands of years. Blacks used the phrase in Africa just as Asians did in Southeast Asia...where there are monkeys. Though an orangutan is no a "monkey", it is easier to train and handle for a commercial that requires "human-like" characterization. Nothing is racist about the commercial.

I agree. I just saw this commercial a few minutes ago, and INSTANTLY saw the racism. I am a person, who always give others the benefit of the doubt, but this is extremely blatant. For years, a common and POPULAR term used by racist Caucasians towards African-Americans, is both "Monkey," and "Ape." If they ever claim that it is NOT a racist commercial, their lie will be even more obvious than their tasteless marketing.

Initially, I thought only about the idea not wanting someone incompetent doing your plumbing. I get that is the message of the commercial. Still, on a certain level, it makes me feel some kind of way when it comes on. I just think that it was careless to use a monkey (which it's been theorized that black people come from). This is clever use of branding, very similar to Findlay Roofing using a dog in their advertisements. It makes the customer say, "Oh yeh the plumbing company with the monkey, I know them." I see no references toward racism other than the guys who are leaving comments on this video. The thing is, if it's not intentionally racist, it comes pretty darn close so why even run the risk? I just recently moved to Georgia and the first time I saw this commercial I viewed it as racist. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I just saw it on tv a moment ago and thought, it's got to be on youtube. This is terrible. They don't ever have to worry about getting my money, for sure.
