There's a reason why the Comoros Coelacanth is protected by law... How many of these rare and beautiful fish need to be disected in the name of science?
yeah atleast let it have babies first so, there is more of the fish to look at and smile, thats what this world needs, i dont care if you disagree, but we need more people to smile...
!Good heavens these people are primitive and backward. Grown men acting like cruel children and dressing it up as an autopsy in an unconvincing attempt to look civilized. How repulsive.
no they probably found it dead maybey but still they could have sent it over to a more "Civilized" area to be examined instead of some third world morons
what i hate is us humans love these animals but what do most do? kill them an autotopsy to learn about them is ok i guess but if we dont stop killing them like many more animals they will die out sadly we have nothing we can do once someone buys a coelacanth for 10,000 bucks someone will have to try killing one very sad huh?

@DrElmo2 there are two species of coelacanths that have been discover, the one of the shores of India or close to africa, and the other by indonesia. So that been said to answer you question, its because thats where the fish live. And I mean no disrespect when I say this, but most fisherman over at that side of the world may know how to catch fish but lack knowlegde beyond that.
So according to you, every handline fisher man, casts his line into the deep blue sea and knows exactly what he is going to catch??? Coelacanths dont live on any sea bed they live in caves 200 to 300 meters deep, Coelacanth ain't a Flounder!!!
Why do people have to show there emotion by personally attacking individuals??
C'mon, get a dictionary and learn how to express yourself (your right to do so) but in a slightly more eloquent manner, I am sure that people would take your opinion more seriously.

this is a chance for scientists to examine this fish. from this autopsy they will be able to see just how well this fish is doing and if its population is indeed small or large. they probably learned so much just from that one autopsy.
There are millions of dumb reasons to kill animals. This is not one of them. This is a Coelacanth, what is seen to be a living transition between fish and Amphibians. They have lungs, fleshy "limbs" and a hinged skull.
Fish was caught by local fisherman, he did not know what it was until he brought it back to the mainland and was told that he couldn't feed his family with it, the fact that it had eggs didn't surface until they did the autopsy
@janepak It sad that these fish get caught by fisherman, but once they do there is little that they can do for them. Even if they tried to return it to deeper water the damage is already done and the fish won't survive.
The people who did this must have killed for the opportunity! Wow.
For those of you worrying whether this would have killed off the species, there is probably a healthy population of them. We'd just assumed they were extinct because we'd never seen them before, but I think they just live...I don't quite know. Pelagically, or deep sea. In a place it would be very hard to find them. So we'd never found a living specimen until now.
Dude please read a freakin book they do mate do you know what that is and besides that they have been here for a long time see the first sitting back in the 1930's just found one and since then they know where they are and what they eat and everything i think they can be found in the indian ocean and somewhere by south africa just read up on them!
I was just asking you how you knew they were in really big numbers. I know they are a very thinly distributed, limited population. Just wondered where you got your 'facts' from. Incidentally, if you had read Wikipedia, you would have seen 'In 1998, the total coelacanth population was estimated to have been 500 or fewer, a number that would threaten the survival of the species.' That sort of puts your comments in a bit of a dim light.
...and incidentally - I have a degree in Geology, Biology and Palaobiology and have studied the Coelacanth and other Sarcopterygians fairly extensively so before you throw your paucity of intellect around, at least get to know your enemy.
wait wait... if its a prehistoric fish that was thought to b dead, and it has eggs...then that must mean the we r still ending species by killing off the young b4 they ever had a chance! GJ people, your doing great!
No body is killing anything on purpose, the fish was caught by mistake by a local fisherman, that was fishing to feed his family. The fish once brought to the surface would not have survived had it been let loose again, as the fish lives at great depth and bringing it to the surface already sealed its destiny.
An autopsy, also known as a post-mortem examination,is a medical procedure that consists of a thorough examination of a corpse to determine the cause and manner of death and to evaluate any disease or injury that may be present.
This prehistorical fish was already dead, akildama3423 is right.
why do people always have to kill things that are already extinct ! that is so fuckin annoying! that fish was proabaly the last of its kind but nooooo you have to be stupid and kill it just to see what it looks like !!!
uhmm..correction...when you do an autopsy, the THING that was autopsied is already DEAD. actually, the fish died before autopsied...if you have time try to look in the dictionary and find the definition of AUTOPSY..and you will understand what i mean..ok?!
They caught by accident, even if it's released it wouldn't survive. So why release it, going to be waste anyways. Much better idea to learn more about it than throwing it away.
"Is the fisherman had released the fish, it would have survived!"
Wrong. The fish came from deep waters. With the decrease in water pressure the fish had an extremely low chance of survival even if the fisherman did release it.
MMMMMM...They should fry it up when they are done with it. So they can tell the world what it taste like. Maybe give it ti Emeril , so she can do a show on how to cook prehistoric fish....LETS TAKE OUR AUTOPSY UP A NOTCH...BAM!!!
