@holypilgrim90 It CAN work. Just DON'T ever fight them on THEIR ground. The phalanx was well-suited to Greek geography and general features. But on the open areas, it doesn't work out so well. Phalanxes can be easily outmanuevered, if the commander is skilled enough and has cavalry. Phalanxes were also very unwieldly in faster pace warfare. Horse Archers were a BIG problem when Greek troops engaged other armies. Try out flanking the phalanx and come in from the sides and behind. VERY nasty. ;)

@holypilgrim90 Of COURSE. ;) Skilled Greek commanders, as Prince points out, COULD use the phalanx well in open ground, but you had to be careful. Discipline, tactics, and bravery count for a lot, especially in those days. How did Rome become an Empire?

@Brotherhoodbikechief Not Spartan hoplites, elephants cant even hit them from behind sucessfully. Well if way outnumbered i guess it could work, but its a long shot. Spartans in my opinion are the best troops in the game and will probably kill just about anything. i killed 800 British chariots using 81 Spartans lost 19 men and they had me fully surrounded.

@deadlycatthefirst Yeah, to test the theory i put 760 British heavy chariots in vs 81 Spartans. I won loosing about 50-60 Spartans. Not really sure what would have happened had i put them in with elephants, ill try that next. But my guess is Spartans would win with 60-70 losses.
@deadlycatthefirst For me elephants won as well but with like 100 losses, well mainly because armored ones kept shooting. Tried again, 300 Spartans vs full army of armored, they won again but lost most their armies.
No disrespect to pom or anything, but he is not the best player. If you actually play the total war series games, you will find pros that play in tournaments etc. Just saying. pom is pretty good, but on a higher scale not "the best" as many people would say, and again i mean no disrespect to pom im a big fan.
@iPoTeNcYy True, but he is one of the best Public players. He doesn't play in Tourny's as far as I know, so he doesn't know all of the tricks and such that "pro" players use.
It is a shame though that whoever designed the spartan units never bothered to even glance at historical text or images to make even a cursory effort to design them accurately.

whats so good about this game ? protect your flanks with cavalry attack your enemys with your cavalry, strong center with spears and archer and siege in the middle and maybe use some skirmishers before the main battle what else is there to these battles???
@zerker12568901 It doesn't work that easily. Timing and micromanagement are important. You have to have knowledge of what your advantage is, whether it be infantry, cavalry, or missiles. If you have an infantry disadvantage, you have to get your cavalry into the rears of their infantry to win. But, if you don't get your cavalry there in time, you pretty much lost. You also have to know the weaknesses and strengths of your units and the enemy units. You can't just use a basic strategy to win.

I thought Spartans remained shirtless with their plateskirts and had the upsidedown V on the shield they carried....I had to do A LOT of research on Spartans back in school. I am just curious why they're dressed in red shower robes.
@AMAURIS966 actually spartans had a very heavy armour. Similar to the one of armoured hoplites in the game but as you said with the upsidedown V (which is a lamda, greek letter that starts the word Lakedemonii. Lamda is pronounced as L). They would wear all red because they didnt want their opponents to notice blood on their skin.
finally POM's point that they wouldnt pursue fleeing enemies is not true. They wouldnt go far away but in every battle they would hunt them for limiting their numbers

@grculturefun Yet, the Romans did not make direct copies from Greece. It was more like, modified to be more efficient. Also the Romans had a lot of things the Greeks didn't. Also, America cannot be compared to the Romans, because they don't go on enormous conquests and take huge portions of countries. They liberate, not conquer. Even though this is not necessarily a good thing, you still can't make the analogy that Romans were like Americans with warfare. The Nazis would be a better comparison.

whats so good about this game ? protect your flanks with cavalry attack your enemys with your cavalry, strong center with spears and archer and siege in the middle and maybe use some skirmishers before the main battle what else is there to these battles???

@zerker12568901 It doesn't work that easily. Timing and micromanagement are important. You have to have knowledge of what your advantage is, whether it be infantry, cavalry, or missiles. If you have an infantry disadvantage, you have to get your cavalry into the rears of their infantry to win. But, if you don't get your cavalry there in time, you pretty much lost. You also have to know the weaknesses and strengths of your units and the enemy units. You can't just use a basic strategy to win.

@ThePunker4life agreed - would be great if they could add the great graphics of mtw2 and the gameplay of rtw in rome total war, maybe add some more tactical and graphic details on the campaign map from the empire total war and napoleon.

I thought Spartans remained shirtless with their plateskirts and had the upsidedown V on the shield they carried....I had to do A LOT of research on Spartans back in school. I am just curious why they're dressed in red shower robes.

@AMAURIS966 actually spartans had a very heavy armour. Similar to the one of armoured hoplites in the game but as you said with the upsidedown V (which is a lamda, greek letter that starts the word Lakedemonii. Lamda is pronounced as L). They would wear all red because they didnt want their opponents to notice blood on their skin.
finally POM's point that they wouldnt pursue fleeing enemies is not true. They wouldnt go far away but in every battle they would hunt them for limiting their numbers

my teacher said that according to College professors (and other people who study history) 300 spartans actually could win a successful battle against 1000 persians
because a Spartan's life was devoted to defending the city-state and war so they were trained generally by the age of 5 and the couldn't mary until they were in their mid 30's
