  • Jerry Garcia, or Johnny Russel

  • Is there anyone out there who know how to sing like this anymore!!??

  • I think 'Big Johnny Russell', was one of the best, and most humble people in the entertainment buisness. I remember one time, on the old 'Nashville Now' t.v. show, he had on a pair of blue jeans, with a rip in the crotch. A female stage hand came over with a dark magic marker to cover it up. Boy, he milked it for all it was worth. What a great guy! I really miss him.

  • GUILTY AS HELL--CASE CLOSED

  • what he said was part of the script. big john knew they were gonna say it. if you ever watched their show, they said somethin like that to all their guests

  • haha i thought the grateful dead wrote this, i was wrong. i think this is my favorite version, this guy has an incredible voice

  • Listen to Jerry Garcia's version. Three part harmony!

  • I was just listening to jerry garcia band perform this one... this guy rocks

  • @SIGNALSTAT ...Dam right. He loved his Red necks, Whitesox, and Blue Ribbon Beer.

  • Ok... I dig this version but the dude isn't even playing the guitar... seriously??

  • @MRjasonkent Ease up man, he can't reach the strings!!

  • @coleyman1 Ha ha, that's funny! I still appreciate the artist and the song of course...

  • them wre very lucky to even have an show it was the great gueststars who made the show! not themnither were half the stat as johnny russell was!

  • lol

  • i don't believe it was a real insult, i believe he was just funnin' with johnny, probably good friends, usually its easy to tell with us boys from the south, you see... johnny didn't bust teddy in the teeth with his guitar, so it musta been all in fun, & as we say in kentucky "get er' did"

  • Teddy is a prick.

  • Johnny was the real deal.

    The Wilburn's were assholes.

dig at at a guys fat.... that's cute.

    That was really good!

  • i only knew this as a Jerry Garcia cover, but its great to hear the original! its really something.

  • I used to sing this at my MaMas house right after it came out. My two sisters used to ask for this song alot. One of my Favorite memories, being at MaMas and sitting around the kitchen table and playing guitar and singing songs!

  • This is really a good song!

  • Try listening to the Hawking Brothers version from australia Great

  • my dad started taking me to the opry shortly before johnny died. johnny always did the closing show and kept the audience way after 12. he was funny as hell and one of my favorites

  • I agree

  • I thought he was a great singer. I also thought that Teddy Wilburn was an asshole for saying what he did. That's just my opinion.

  • It is my opinion as well,But Mr.Russel took it like a man and that stands the test of time.

    regards

    waffe

  • The wilburn brothers couldn't have carried Johnies shoes. The guy had a beautiful voice. Yes Teddy showed what a bozo he was.

  • Well said Mr.buckethead!

    waffe

  • @jrdill1929 teddy Wilburn was an ass but that was part of johnny's act , he could laugh at him self along with everyone else , and i am a jolly 300 pounder that can do the same

  • @jrdill1929 I have to agree with you. Totally uncalled for. You can tell by the way the crowd responded. Wilburn brothers were good, but Teddy didn't have anything on Johnny, fine man and great songwriter.

  • @jrdill1929 Yes he was a you-know what for sayin that...total jerk! And Johnny is a good singer. I like Alison Krauss' version of this song.

  • @jrdill1929 Yes what a prick of a thing to say and what class Johnny had in not making a deal about it.

  • This is the first time I've actually seen Johnny sing this song after just hearing it on his recording. What a wonderful singer, songwriter and entertainer. I am hoping that Johnny had a good relationship with Teddy Wilburn (Doyle, too of course) and had a sense of humor about his introduction. When Teddy said he hoped no one took offense - Johny was cute saying "there's a fence over there". LOL. . Regardless, Johnny was very classy about it all I feel. Thanks for posting. - Paula

  • A great song.

  • niiice, I've never heard a version of this that wasn't a cover. Go ahead and call me a hippie but I prefer Jerry Garcia Band's rendition from the Wilkins Theatre on Feb. 2, 1980! Anyway though, nice post

  • RED NECKS WHITE SOCKS AND BLUE RIBBON BEER IS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT MADE THIS COUNTRY!!!! Johnny Russell put it in words, He is the real thing*********** COUNTRY!!! MUSIC!!! Thanks Johnny!!

  • how are you john russell

  • That blimp line was nothing more than a cheap shot, did I hear crickets straight after he said it,? Certainly didn't hear much laughter from the audience. Kind of a shame that Johnny had too much class to mention the possum on this blokes head!! Great artist Johnny Russell. Thanks for sharing.

  • Great Song! Great Singer! Red necks, white socks, and blue ribbon beer is my favorite.

  • He was great!

  • thanks fir the post i cant find this song anywhere

  • Check eBay to see if you can find Johnny Russell's LP that might be up for sale. He was the best. I have five of Johnny's personal collection of LPs and I treasure them all!

  • I love this song! Thanks for posting!!!
