Well 2nd HR lesson today and finally figured out I got to slow down the shifts to make it boogy, just wish the instructer hinted to me about that, instead of shouting brake, brake, BRAKE!, which I realised was pissing me off. Any hoo I did warn him about the gearbox needing to be picked up behind us. "Do student's have to pay if a gearbox goes BANG!? I asked. "No" he replied. heheheh, happy days. 18 gears no one can think at that speed. Happy trucking
Thanks for sharing. I did my Heavy Rigid license in the exact same truck. Definitely takes a bit of getting used to but I had plenty of fun!! Unfortunately haven't driven a crash box since I obtained my license! :(
Will be going for my HC license in a few months again with a crash box. Will be great!!
@MrAdamchapman Well In Qld you hold your HR for 12 months then go onto HC or MC. Makes sense really because if you can handle one trailer, why not another extra or half for that matter.
@TCFan25 In NSW you have to hold a HC for minimum 12 months before stepping up to MC. though there used to be a way to skip up a class with a letter from your employer.
Not sure if you can still do that - I hope so. I need to go from an MR to HC.
If I were a trucker, I swear I'd mess up with the gears all the time, and not knowing what to choose... It's like, overwhelming with 18 gears to choose from
@CobraMarty I drive a 10 speed. Just change 5 gears flip a switch and repete. Most of the time I start n 4th, flip a switch skip 5th. go back to 1st. (6th) go up from there. When u get use to 10 whats 8 more.
noticed how you use overdrive as a splitter on the way up, yes I know you are showing off for the camera but what is the usual pattern you use, as I'm used to 15 speeds.
@myfeeling4you . . Depends on a number of factors, I drive it as you would use a nine speed, after all an 18 is just a nine speed with the ability to split each gear, I normally split into overdrive on top gear, or split the top 2 gears, no real need for more unless going uphill
Nice work drive!! and to the idiots on here who couldnt do our jobs to save them selves get real, cab is our home we can wear what we like and no not all drivers are fat...arre all negative people stupid?
Showing off ......properly titled ! I am sure you don't abuse the truck like that all the time. I use my clutch to start and float the rest personally. have a great day driver.
stewedapple ...hey mate just read your comment..what they teach you at the driving school and what you learn by yourself is totally different some things you take on board and it works but other you learn as you go...as far as splitting it depends on how heavy you are and the roads downhill uphill and so on..thats the only way you will learn properly just try and get into a proper 18 speed and go from there.
I think the instructor must have got it wrong, he hardly drives outside of the school so would almost always be changing an unloaded truck and would not need to worry about the splitter. Watching your video has been a great help! You don't seem to be double clutching though, or is it just too subtle to see? Thanks for the video by the way, best gear-changing one on youtube in my opinion!
I am quite confused about the splitter button on the side of the stick. I have just completed my HR non-syncro licence in VIC Australia. I was told that the splitter button was to be used only up to 4th, from 5th on it would not get used. But I see you using it all the way to 18th. The training truck was obviously empty so we could go through the gears very quickly. I want to apply for work using an 18 speed gearbox and would like to know how to use the splitter properly first.
@shaned8845 13 is actually top split not bottom deep reduction15 is the bottom split.......use all the gears you can when heavy . when going down the road use the proper gear to maintain the sweet spot of your engine and save money.
@stewedapple .use all the gears you can when heavy . when going down the road use the proper gear to maintain the sweet spot of your engine and save money.
to answer zytekfans question, in some truck yes u need clutch and double-clutching but if u have a decent crash gear box u dont need to clutch in the gears.. eg ive been in a louis 9 spd.. no clutch.. western star 15 spd.. no clutch.. and u need a decent truckie in the seat..
Cars only dont have them because they dont need them. A 6 speed trans 4wd with a dual-range transfer case has a total of 12 different overall gear ratios, yet you see mothers drive their kids to school in them. You dont necessary use all the gears in this gearbox either and if you can change any of the gears you can change all of them. I also hear that these modern 18 speed boxes etc. are simpler than the older systems so therefore yes you can get more complicated.

Wouldnt it be better to go straight ot MC instead if thats the case?

If you are overwhelmed by a 18 speed.
What would you do if you have 78 gears ratios.
I know an old '47 International KB12 with a 300 Cummins that had 78 gear ratios.
Behind the 300 cummins was a 13 speed road ranger with a 3 speed brownie transfer case and a two speed rear end with high gears in it.
At 78th gear at 1500 rpm it goes about 70mph.
COOL HUH

I want to get my HR licence as I only have an MR and want to drive decent trucks. I'm sick of driving pissy little matchboxes around the city.
Looking at the complicated shifting scares the shit out of me.
It makes the 8 tonne rigid I've been driving look like a Hilux.

I don't know why they would say not to use the splitter above 5th.
An 18 speed is just a 9 speed with the ability to "split" every gear 2 x 9 =18.
If it's a 13 speed thats a different story
