  • Excelente!

  • Superba!

  • I can't be bothered reading all the bickering comments here. Just wanted to say how great I think this is, I am a huge Kate Bush fan, but this is new to me. Thanks for posting..

  • I love this! Kate looks great!

  • i do not about the man i love.but ilove kate doing this she is so sex"y.

  • Love this song!

  • @nathanielbagshot-a lot of jazz greats couldn't read music.stevie wonder and paul mccartney can't read music ...music is to be listened to or do u like to sit on ur sofa with a glass of red wine reading the sheet music to Porgy and Bess?Duh.

  • @MrMinky09 What you said about many musicians not being able to read music is true enough, Charlie Chaplin couldn't read music, either and yet he wrote all the scores for his films, too.

When Paul McCartney wrote his "Liverpool Oratorio" Carl Davis was the one that put it on paper for him.

  • Surprising and lovely performance by a pop singer by the name of Kate Bush. Just hope she will keep interpreting jazz standards in the future.

  • i do love this..

  • Badly recorded with limiters all over the place, no highs, flattened sound and absolutely no soundstage.

That and Larry Adler was a Communist; Toots Thielemans is a better harmonica player; most of you know him as the whistler on the Old Spice commercials.

  • @SatchmoSings No what you said is pure speculation. Larry adler was not a community. He was accused of being a communist sympathiser and left the U.S. for England. Toots Thielemans is an amazing harp player but I wouldn't say he is better. Just listen to some of Larry's albums and I doubt you'll every find someone better. I would say he and Toots were equally matched. :)

  • @SatchmoSings

right... and even if the mix were to ur liking,it would sound great here as an mp3 on youtube?

  • @MrMinky09 I can see you know little, if anything, about what makes for a good sound recording; you're one of these people that is hung up on "the mix."

  • Ah... for the days when songs were written by people who could read music.

  • @nathanielbagshot Ah...that's a stupid statement.

  • I'd never been a fan of Kate Bush until I heard her stunning version of this song. Maybe not the definitive version - that's got to be Lady Day - but still very beautiful and moving.

  • WAOOO...

  • Sends chills down my spine.......so atmospheric and soulful. and the finest cover version of any song ever........no exceptions,

  • I always felt that Kate looked so sad in this video. Love her rendition of this song, though !

  • What a versatile artist!!

  • Sorry I heard this music for the first time when I was about tem years old, a long time ago.

After so many years at about two years ago I heard it again and I remembered this song. That’s funny how I loved this song at the time and kept it on my mind.

Is there anyone who can explain this?

Thank you George Gershwin for this lovely music.

  • Beats me how this ever happened. You can't have two more different artists, I mean why did he think of her? And more to the point what made her agree to it when she's never collaborated with anyone else (apart from some backing vocals on a few things)???

  • She is UNCOMPARABLE!

  • very beautiful song

  • Как долго я искал эту песню ...

  • O-o-o-o !!! GERSVIN-

  • One word - sensational!

  • @Rock13Lady Oh Rock13Lady ! I didn't undesrstood anithing you wrote , because I don't understand GREEK , but I agreed .

  • @Arqueiroify That's russian, proof that music (or shall I say Kate Bush) is universal !

  • @Aljalusensei I knew you were writing in Russian... I also knew that you would correct me . Thanks for the correction . If you write in Greek or Russian, I will not understand anything ! Thanks again and good luck in your contacts on YOUTUBE Arqueiroify ( very old brazilian man ) .

  • Wow, this is very different from my Kate Bush albums. It makes me wonder how broad the music is that has influenced her.

  • Same song, very different lady singer!

  • are they a couple of jews ?????? any ideas

  • @lz127graf Larry Adler was an atheist and Kate Bush is a Catholic, but what does it matter? If the answer affects how you enjoy this wonderful version of a great song than you are a very sad person.

Oh, and multiple punctuation marks are a sign of mental instability.

  • Silgen, I think I love you.

  • So w o n d e r f u l. An amazing surprise. Agood song is always a good song. And the same for a good Artist like Kate Bush.

  • She sings a remarkably straight version of it, I was surprised. Just a small flare at the end.

  • Kate Bush and Billy Holiday on my bed at each side whispering The Man I Love in my ears.

    A great musical stereo cum!

  • Although maybe this song is not her cup of tea, she's fabulous...

  • It's that suggestion of a hissing sibilant in her voice that ....och well

  • This performance is pure Gold! Kate Bush delivers a spell binding performance, and add the legendary Larry Adler and a great arrangement...WOW! More than Well Done!

  • LONG LIVE QUEEN BUSH!

  • I'm happy for the man she's in love with....

  • For me Kate Bush is one of the best voice in a Galaxy!!!

I love this song. Great arrangement by Sir George Martin

  • No matter when or where, every time I hear Kate's voice, it makes me fall in love with her all over again!

  • Her voice is perfect for this song.

  • I never realized that she did this !! most excellent

  • Talk about beauty and the beast - Kate and Larry

  • you know who he is!

  • I adore you KT Bush. I loved you way back when...I love you still and I always shall x x

  • Love this song!

  • great job!!

  • braveeeceemo madam mwahhhz Ratharr

  • i actually think billie's rendition is the best, and i really hate it when people make rape meatphors.

  • May be I shouldn't have used the word rape, because I don't want to hurt anybody.

I take music very serious so emotions sometimes go on the run with me.

Ella Fizgerald gives me the impression she thinks that she is more important then the composer. Billy Holliday sings it very sensitive and beautiful, but to me Kate Bush is equally sensitivity but has the most beautiful voice and personality.

  • @pcvl6 I'm with you, and the "rape" metaphor is unobjectionable, so don't worry. You don't have to be insensitive to the horror of rape to use it metaphorically because it's apt when it comes to the sterile, lifeless, "corporate" version of the over-rated ella! You care about msuic so are violation of its beauty is inneed a rape. For me, Billie's the best.

  • То, что я называю настоящей музыкой.

  • Kate's the singer Gershwin wrote this song for!

  • superbe Kate 4 ever !

  • from what year that vid is?

  • 1994

  • Do I hear a lisp ?

  • no its nuance and stylization.

  • She's sophistiKATEd!

  • Heavenly performance..Thanks for this..*****

  • gorgeous!

  • i know person that has her autograph if any1 is intrested jus email me on my youtube

  • @wepimpspaki ... oh ..what do you mean by interested in her autograph?? you gonna give it to the first one who reacts?

    sorry..little joke..

    greetings Marttinus

  • all that is missing are the little crackles of an old 78rpm.

  • Simply love Kate's rendition, such a sweet song....

  • Wonderful ... a touch of Monroe in Kate's delivery ...

  • Dylan The Harmonica player?????HAHAHAHA...

How can you compare Dylan to Adler? Are you deaf of maybe stupid you are?

  • Most men are like leafs in the wind, the next strum will blow them away to their next destination ;-)

  • meeting Kate would be my good news day.

  • Kate Bush sings this surprisingly well and Larry Adler is far less demented than usual. Very nice.

  • My hero, Larry Adler, the greatest harmonica player the world has ever known. I saw him live twice in Sydney towards the end of his amazing life. And Kate is the perfect partner for this beautifully produced presentation of the Gershwin classic. And the the band's contribution 'S Wonderful.

  • I must admit Larry Adler sure is a great harmonica player, and as you say ''the greatest'' perhaps? but as a Dylan fan ( don't laugh ) I love the rawness of his playing, and the older i get the more I appreciate the American style of his playing!

  • Bob is a genius, and possibly the single most important artist of the past century, but he doesn't rank as a harmonica player. Larry, as a technician, had no equal, although Robert Bonfiglio is astounding. Toots Theilmanns has been, for half a centyury, the greatest improvisor. Charlie McCoy the best country player, with Norton Buffalo not far behind. Blues? Take your pick: Little Walter, Sonny Boy I or II, Junuior Wells, Paul Butterfield - all great. Granted, it's only one man's opinion.

  • Yes, Good to hear Larry Addler too. Not quite as hot as Ella, but still tender, and makes it beautiful to listen.

  • So Kate where´s that standard album ? You do this Brilliantly.

  • adorable combination of classic song, veteran musician and fantastic voice. kate should record more standards as they really suit her

  • Brilliant! Kate Bush is wonderful! No one has mentioned the arrangement. Simply great and true to the music. The only one who does a better job is Frances Langford who keeps you breathless from beginning to end. Kate Bush does her proud.

  • Kate and Frances are brilliant, but don't miss Keely Smith's rendition too which is really and truly moving

  • Larry Adler was the best harmonica performer ever. What can I say about Kate Bush? She's a goddess.

  • @AtahualpaGoldstein Sorry your big call re Larry WTF check out got my mojo working Muddy Waters with Jerry Pertnov whatever on harp, agree I imagined Kate without the bush

  • i only know about this by watching hot shots

  • gggreat

  • Gee, these comments read like you're watching a football game and not a work of art . Not a word was mentioned of George Gershwin who wrote this song in the twenties , as in nineteen twenties . The black and white photography adds to the character singing the song , straight ,no jazz but true to the mood of the original era .I personally will never understand the smug nature of criticisms coming from our era , from people who never committed of risked anything except a few terse remarks .

  • Never heard it put that way before.. about our era. -I honestly don't think that, on my own, I'd have observed the phenomena with enough perspective and insight to have ever made a similar statement myself. Thanks for that. I cannot remember the last time somebody wrote down a simple observation - that actually stopped me cold in my tracks and opened my head up to such a degree, I have been going through allot of "adjustments" to my understanding of people. - Most leading to forgiveness

  • She does Ella justice- which is REALLY hard to do.

  • the real beauty of this doll is within her head.... I have to meet this snowflake!!!!!!!

  • i thought i couldnt me more amazed by kate! but i was wrong:-)

  • Leave it to a Brit to do a definitive version of a quintessential American song.

  • One of the best versions, fantastic!

  • Fantastic!

Kate does such a great job of this song of yearning.

  • Gyp! Kate is great, but Larry hardly plays! Why???? I'm here for the harp...

  • Yeah, she can write, sing, perform, dance, direct, produce and live a normal life - but I bet she can't sing Gershwin...

    3:00

She just walks in and does the definitive version of TMIL - Bloody hell! She is a goddess...

  • @arosegrowingold .Anyone who does't detect a little Billy Holiday in this is nuts...Great Rendition !

  • @arosegrowingold

    Omg, Kate can do everything!

  • I'm here Kate!!!!

  • viva kate!!

  • Incrivelmente belo!

  • One off Crikey Spiders, for Larry Adler's 80th birthday. Got to admit, it is a truly excellent Gershwin song that is brilliantly sung by Kate.

    Peace

    Phil

  • to CrikeySpiders: This isn't the only cover she did. She also covered Elton John's 'Rocket Man' and Marvin Gaye's 'Sexual Healing'.

  • She also covered a couple of Beatles tracks. Check 'The long & winding road' & 'She's Leaving Home' -

  • Absolutely love this song..... we, my newly wed husband and I used it as our opening song at our wedding..... love you Kate for singing it soooo beautifully

  • How???? "The man I love" left me for a virtual girlfriend from his past.... Im sad and cannot help it!!!! Give me ONE reason to cheer up, apart from being alive.... My dog is alive too....

  • Hey pattyhansen. Where are you? Your dog too? I'm on the border of England and Scotland. You must be in a better place. There's reason 1 to cheer up. How'd I do?

  • I'm in Argentina. There's reason 2 to be suffering.... But I'm better today, Roybucket.... I found out that "the man I love" may become "The man I loved" if I just try it.... But a couple of Clonazepams every day are helping me a lot.... And a 10 mg dose of Zolpidem help me to sleep .... and go on dreaming stupidly about "the man I love".... Love is such a destructive, stupid, self-injure feeling... It's just the biggest trap for the human species' preservation!!!! Keep away from it, Roy!

  • Hey baby. Check this out. 18 years married. Thought that was it but I was wrong?! You may be wrong too. Does he connect with you all the time? Are all the darkest feelings you have reflected in him? I dunno' Talk to me girl....I've done all the "azepam" cures but guess what... I'm still in the same fucking place I was before! Where are you now?

  • amoresperros

  • My father used to whistle this song every time she entered the house.... I don't know why... But I love it, because of that... and because my Dad was so sad, just like me now... I have never been so sad in my entire life...

  • Cheer up!

  • I love Kate and this song and I play it on piano:)

  • gershwin+kate= brilliance

  • What an amazing performer song writer singer and all round talent kate bush is !!!

Truly .. under estimated .. and never gets the credit she deserves !!!

Personally !! i think she is a genuis!!!!

  • I have been a Kate Bush fan since I first saw her debut on Saturday Night Live back in the 70's. She is blessed with the voice and the physical beauty of a Muse. I absolutely love this sensual woman, and watching her sing just melts my heart...

  • Smoldering Hot!!! How Beautiful is Kate Bush!!!!

  • Это гимн моей любви!!!

This is a hymn of my love!!!

  • Kate ..it's no lie you have so many of us who love you more than any love we ever known..Mike

  • This song makes me to get gooseflesh. I love Kate's voice as well... mmmmmm.

  • Супер!!!!Моя любимая песня!

  • I don't care what anyone else says. Personally I enjoy her cover of this song. If artist like her don't cover the old standards, they will be lost forever, and that would be a shame. She stayed true to the original song, and I appreciate that. But then again, this woman could fart in a bag, and I bet she could make that sound great too!

    Thanks for posting this

  • ... They couldn't tell me anything, but just hearing her voice made my day. Kate covering what i had always thought as a Billie Holiday -song... Interesting!

This was before "Aerial" came out - so when i went to ask about this song it had been nearly 12 years she had released an album! No wonder I was desperate! ;)

I love Kate's voice so much nobody else's compares to it. Just a personal preferance...

  • I can not understand comments like "unspeakably horrid" when we are talking about Kate Bush. While she is at her best doing her own songs, anything she sings makes me go bonkers. Just hearing that voice... For me there simply is nobody as good as Kate, musically speaking. Whatever she does is interesting - on one way or another. I first heard this song on a department store and insisted on meeting the ppl responsible for the music - just bc I wanted to know if Kate had published some new music.

  • This sounds like no other version I can think of....that alone makes it worthwhile.

Why should Kate do it any other way?

She's always had the otherworldly soprano

which was cigarette damaged over time and yet

the emotional range more than makes up for it. She did this first and foremost as an homage to the composer and Larry Adler.

  • she has chosen to use this terrible vibrato. a legitimate choice, of course, but it prevents me from appreciating her cover

  • thats her normal voice its not some forced vibrato

  • I certainly wouldn't call it "unspeakably horrid". Nor would I generalise about Kate doing covers - she does an excellent version of Elton's "Rocket Man" (video from the "Wogan" show available on YouTube)with the trad Irish music that characterised a lot of her work around the "Dreaming" and "Hounds" periods. But yes her best songs are her own and nobody but nobody can do a decent cover of one of them.

  • Smooth, nice. Thanks for posting this.

  • oh my gosh...what a vibration!!!!!!!!!!!

(I really don't like it...but it's so original and characteristic that I'm putting it among my favorites )

    *emy*

  • Kate Bush singing jazz is rather Kate Bushy than jazzy...

  • Great version - full of doubt and longing - Kate's pulled it off

  • Kate.amore immenso!!

  • Ahhhh... always had a soft spot for Kate. She sings cool jazz in a really moving way.

  • Superb -

  • I have enjoyed her work over the years, but this orchestration & tempo are almost an exact rip-off of the Billie Holiday version. At least if you're going to do it, do something different with it, like my version. Still, she sounds good, and it's good music.

  • Classy and cool

  • l heard this on the Sarah Kennedy show and it made me rush out and buy the album. She sings it so much better than Alison Moyet and l love her voice.

  • I love Kate singing her own work, but this is lacklustre and does not come alive until that very last line. I expected her to be better.

  • Majestic

  • Majestic

  • so sensitively,
