If I could add a few I would suggest Maisky, Ma and du Pré? I laughed a bit when you showed Piatigorsky playing Allegro Appassinato when du Pré's version is so much more renown. And the Bach prelude is the best you could find for Rostropovich?
Overall though, wonderful selections, all of the above are top-tier cellists who everyone should know. Thanks for the video. :)
They don't call the Dvorak the most played cello concerto for nothing! The creator of this video happened to pick a clip of both Fournier and Shafran playing it, which I find (slightly) humorous. Personally, I didn't like Shafran's vibrato in his interpretation, but I suppose that's just me. I like Rostropovich a little more, personally. I don't know why. BTW, the Prelude's a must in a cello video, but I would have had Rostropovich playing the Dance of the Elves instead.

Very nice video, but no Yo-yo Ma?! Ahh! And the Dvorak Cello Concerto is very nice, but the man who played it at the end was a bit under tempo... Great video!
You know nothing compared to Daniil Shafran, and the nature of your comment--as if music were objective and not simply dependent upon the listener for the most part--makes it ridiculously apparent.
Ah, beautiful! Thanks for the videos. You should consider doing a similar compilation of cellists who specialize in non-classical music (e.g. Friedlander, Summer, Beiser).
Just a little detail: the Saint-Saëns Op.43 work is called "Allegro appassionato", with "o" at the end because in Italian "Allegro" is a masculine pronoun.
(The youtube Piatigorsky's video has the wrong name, but it's not big deal).
Thank you for posting this, Shafran3! Daniil Shafran is my favorite, too, thanks.
I believe your list is missing Pablo Casals, Leonard Rose, Janos Starker, Yo-Yo Ma
..and should NOT have Daniil Shafran. I've never heard more out of tune playing than from his recordings. His Prokofiev Sinfonia Concertante, Kabalevsky 2nd Concerto...vibrato goes so high and wide, that it distorts the pitch
Unfortunately, I must disagree. I do not think that Shafran plays out of tunely at all, and infact, he is my favourite cellist. I am very glad that Shafran3 included him in this video - at least someone recongnises his divinity and huge heart. He is one of the greatest cellists that ever lived and not including him in this video would have been an insult. I don't know how anyone can not see his complete mastery of the cello and boundless passion.
While Shafran's playing is definitely idiosyncratic, at the least he demands and deserves respect as a serious musician.
And personally, I think Shafran understood something fundamentally important about the power of music and his instrument. His tone on the cello is one of the most beautiful sounds I've ever encountered (his Rachmaninoff sonata with Fliere is simply gorgeous...), and the zest with which he played Shosta. especially is perfectly in keeping with the music's often acidic air.
OMFG... Look at Daniil's fingers at 4.30-4.40 .... It almost turning like a square shape!!

Well... They where great cellists but there are others that should be here.
I have to say that I don't like Shafran and his Dvorak is one of the worst interpretations.
It shouldn't be played like that.
It's impossible to create a list of the best of the best... But putting Shafran instead of Casals?
And by the way: only the dead count?

Haha...Shafran's Dvorak is one of my favorite interpretations. I'm a cellist, and I can really appreciate Shafran's technique and musicality.
