  • wooho! My beautiful homeland! I will be seeing you very soon for a long time! ; )

  • I know that Gdańsk is one of northern cities of Poland alongside Białystok, Olzstyn and Szczecin.

  • No I mean the history that people go there to see, mostly about the hansa. I believe there is not much left from the 10th century to see. On the other hand, Polish culture has been stolen as well to some extent, for instance Lvov and the area that is the historical Poland. How do historical ukrainians feel about Lvov?

Stalin ruined the history and identity of eastern Europe.

  • I wonder how it feels for the poles to live in a historical city, with the history of another culture.

  • @VilhelmAxel You mean the Prussian pagans from before the 10th century? They're really a part of Polish culture, as are most of those old tribes.

  • Wiesz, w sumie to prawda.

  • Arka , Lechia... Przez takich pseudo-kibicow takie 3miasto sie jebie ! Kogo obchodzi " e ! Ty mlody ! Arka czy Lechia ? " ? I inne pierdoly...

  • Zgadzam się w 10000%

GDANSK 4EVER..kit ze szwabami

  • You are taking actual rules to historical times. In XVIII century in Polish Republic lived Poles(30%),Ukrainians,Belarusians(called Rusini/Lithuanians),Jews,Lithuanians(called Zmudzini),Germans, Tatars and others. Gdansk was mostly German after Teutonic times, but this city defended Polish northern borders during Swedish invasion and the greatest Gdansk enemy was Prussia(after Napoleonic wars when Prussians took Gdansk it became poor city,in 1815 about 17k citizens,in XVIIc about 70k)

  • Many historical monuments were built by Dutch architects (Obberghen), some by Poles (Strakowski) the oldest church by Pomeranian Slavs. Of course German culture was very strong, but it was strong in whole Poland - Poles got western culture from Germans like Germans got culture from Rome before.

In 1945 Red Army completly destroyed (90%) the old city (after capturing) like Koenigsberg. But new citizens (mainly banished from Vilno) rebuild (unfortunatelly only 40%) the old parts.

  • The beautiful "old" houses you can see in Gdansk are from 1946-9, 50s, 60s and 70s..

Some of "original" Danzigers stayed in Gdansk and had a high position in Poland (i.e. Solidarity priest Jankowski, Polish nationalist, whos mother was German from Westfall and father Polish Danziger), Donald Tusk (actual party leader, candidate to president).

  • No prosze aż miło popatrzeć na moje kochane i piękne miasto! :)

  • If you want to know more, visit the page w w w dot gdansk dot pl (and click the british flag in right corner)or just learn about it from books or Wikipedia. Sorry for my mistakes and simple language!

  • eee Gdansk is not an english university, nonono. OMG of course it's not! It's in Poland, it's the place where communism was destroyed and where the World War II was started. It was over 40 years under soviet control and now it's changing a lot. the city has about 500000 occupants and the conurbation more than one million occupants. It has got veeryy interesting and long history. first people lived there 1300 years ago, and the city was set up 1010 years ago.

  • im goin' to gdansk in august, can't wait! <3 to poland from sweden

  • is gdansk an english univeristy and is it any good to go there?

    Robert

  • Interested in German history and culture, I plan to visit Gdansk/Dantzig among ather places. I wasn't aware that Dantzig was still so alive... I thought everything had been destroyed appart from the gate. You Poles have done a brilliant work in rebuilding and maintaining the German heritage. You kept what made Dantzig beautiful (the pearl of the Baltic).

Who could tell me what is German and what is not about the monuments ? (I'd like to be able to differenciate German and Polish architecture)

  • Gdansk was under polish dominance ( 1466-1772 ) multicultural city and this is visible in architecture. It was a "golden age" for Gdansk most of monuments was built or rebuild in those times. And for that reason many Gdansk buildings has „German" and „Polish" features simultaneously.

BTW There is not German heritage only. Gdansk is heritage of many European nations. It is not only heritage of Poles or Germans.

    Sorry for my English :)
