For anyone who didn't read the novella, the movie's ending was far different from the book's. It wasn't Stephen King's idea, but apparently he was okay with it.

Come onto my channel and check out the promo video I made for Rasciss, leave a comment and if you like what you see than please pick yourself up a copy and let me know what you thought about it!
The movie follows novel faithfully up till the very end. The change came as a total surprise to me. Initially I loved it. It's a moment of the blackest of humour. Nothing wrong with that, but the rest of the movie is devoid of it, or has some nervous-giggle kind of humour. So the end clashes, it's a too abrupt chance in mood and in psychology. I wonder if King agreed to it.
The ending is twisted. A father has to shoot his young son dead only to find out he doesn't have to, and then live with it..? King would never write that. A great film until some artistic license was taken with the ending. What was wrong with King's ending?
Sometimes it's what he doesnt tell us that's scary. A point clearly lost on the makers of this film.
@Daddios83 Actually Stephen King said he admired them for taking the story to an even darker place. It's actually the kind of thing Richard Bachman would do ;-) In the novel Thinner a father is trying to poison his wife and in the end also kills his beloved daughter.
Hey not comparing myself to the legendary stephen king, but I am a first time author. my book "Rasciss" is about a man called hollowawk is literally defied death and now must face the vengeance of petty gods, come onto my channel and check out the video i made for my book. I luv the beginning sice it instantly has a picture of Roland & The Dark Tower. Let alone luving to hate the character: Miss Carmody -;). Let alone, luving the scene when the army guy talks about other dimensions.
I'm going to read the book but the movie ending was great. I loved fucked up things like that. I wouldent have liked it as much if they all lived happily ever after.
i love how in the ned, you know the blond chick before they left made the point of wanting to die trying, she ended up dying trying lol, and it really wouldnt have made a difference, because they wouldve ended up killing themselves anyway because of wat they went through
The ending...I'm not sure I agree with it. But it was a terrific plot twist. The only way it could have been crueller for him was watching a truckload of survivors from the market drive past him...
Whoever hated the ending doesn't have a clue about a written piece of amazing work. Step back and actually make sense of it. Basically, they held on for awhile and soon gave up. Only when they gave up, they were saved and essentially fucked since they should have just "held on" for a little longer. It's a mind fuck. I write a LOT like Stephen King. He's the Master of Horror for a reason.
but the ending King wrote wasnt what we got in the movie. the ending in the book was a lot more ambiguous. so the ending ur talking about didnt really have much to do with king.
@FalconMan1960 Stephen King didnt write that ending!!! the ending stephen king wrote in his short story was completely different and open ended, where he never tells the reader what happens to the survivors, he just leaves you hanging.....
i just waiting for "cell" pissing me off because eli roth is dir.. but he hasent started... its been 3 YEARS!! im tired of waiting for eli. give it to frank,
it was page for page.. the only things differint was "the dream" wasnt in it, getting laid wasnt in it, and the ending.. well.. this one was better than the book i think. at least you know what happens.
In my humble opinion, this movie was one of the most accurate and correct renderings of a Stephen King work brought to the big screen. The Mist novelette was a gripping and horrifying tale, and is one of his best short tales. The acting and dialog in the movie was exactly as described in the book, and I was not disappointed in the monsters either. The lack of "big name" actors in the movie did not detract from the story as well.
I liked the Mist. It was a fun movie, but I like to pretend it's not based on a book. It's very much a film Stephen King would make if he was the writer, director, and cast, but that in a way can make it bad as an actual movie. Fun though. :D
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The mist was a horrible piece of shit film.
It's not easy for me to say this as I am a diehard Stephen king fan and I like the rest of darabonts work, but god this movie is a fucking stinker. I'm simply amazed that Stephen would affiliate himself with this kind of production... I suppose he just doesn't care about the quality. It's a little sad to be honest
Wow, look at all the people lining up to kiss this films unworthy rear end! Silly dullards, you'll applaud anything, wont you?
This film eats much ass. How is this possibly the same director who did Shawshank???? The beginning is nothing short of insulting, with all the usual "spoon-feed everyone the obvious", and horrific acting. Yet you people are making it sound as if he's explored new territory, and blazed a trail in the world of horror films. What a trend-setter!
I liked most of the movie but felt that the ending was the closest thing to being batted in the nuts without actually having Mark McGwire taking a home run shot at them.
The saddest ending to a movie I've seen since Old Boy.
King said the movies ending was better than the book and he wishes that he'd written it. 'Nuff said! Let's face it: you get through that batshit crazy stuff in the market; you manage to get to the car without becoming something's dinner; you go out into the mist and you see a devastated world and then this GIANT CTHULU THING manages to not get you...for all you know THAT is the world now and SOMETHIGN is going to get you eventually. Most of us would be wishing to wake up from the nightmare....
I just saw this movie yesterday and it absolutely blew my mind. It's so well shot and the ending kills me lol! Glad he came up with a different ending for the movie than the one in the book. It works so well.
What Thomas Jane said made total sense to me. The Mist could've easily slipped over into B-movie schlock but instead was done seriously. I think what he's referring to with "Tortue Porn" are flicks like Saw and The Hills Have Eyes; "queer-ass attempt" at horror could be construed as the spate of horror films that pull their punches for a PG-13 rating and compromise truly effective horror for profit.
true, but I just have a personal issue angainst any sort of happiness in an ending. For once, I want a complete unhappy ending, 100%. The Mist was still an awesome movie, though.
I'm not sure if there is a movie with an 100% unhappy ending, but I might have seen at least one.
Either way it would be nice to see them more often as it would be more realistic if you ask me (lets face it, not everything ends on a positive outcome).
Even thow the fact that he killed his son, a women he could of loved, and two elderly people, was what set him off. There was a another reason, he had pushed people into getting out in the mist and escaping for absolutely no reason. The people in the truck(after the rescue) demonstrates that the grocery store that they were in would have been found. and the people in it saved...
i freakin loved this movie!!! like..the ending was depressing, of course, but...like...i love how they made u think. cuz what ollie said that one time like people would go crazy if they are in fear, and they will do anything for the person who promises them they will be ok. LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!
This movie is about an Unchoice situation people who dont understand it think it sucks like PEDROMO say the movie its About DEEP THOUGHT it will takes alot for your kids to understand this movie situation and real LIFE
the ending is what made The Mist more than your average horrorflick. It wasn't great either (the special effects were horrible) but definitely something different.
basically 90% of the ppl that hate this movie is because of it's sad ending, ppl weren't expecting it and wanted another generic ending everyone is all use to,honestly i'm glad it wasn't just another formula generic ending that you always get in movies nowadays, being just so predictable and uninteresting.
So would you have liked it if they got out of the car and started singing and dancing? I mean, that wouldn't be a generic ending.
I liked the movie, but I didn't like the ending. I mean, really, I understand them killing themselves, but I would have waited for monsters to attack the car. For all they knew, they had gotten away from the monsters.
Well they are about to use fuel bombs on New York to kill the monster and the two take shelter in a tunnel in the park, then a bright flash appears and the camera falls. Then the credits roll, and something unintelligible is said over the credits which leaks the idea of an equally bad sequel..
Oh wait thats Cloverfield. My Bad!!
No way am I giving the ending to The Mist away. One of my all time favorite movies of all time.
I have yet to see the movie, probably wont actually, but I read the book. Actually, it was a story, not a book, it was a story in the book Skeliton Crew. I thought it was good, as good as his other books anyway. The end was like a short story ending, cause that`s what it was...
the worst shit is that he took out the bullets of the gun and he didnt know that its not enough to kill them and himself???..thats realy stupid..i mean wtf???..he looked at the number of bullets left...but he found that its not enough to kill himself when he killed them...how stupid can a movie script be..damn
Well probably because a quick death is preferable to;
A) Starvation - they didnt get the groceries when they left
B) Waiting for something to get inside and eat them - eventually something big and bad enough would come along and do just that (maybe you missed the giant Cthulu monster)
C) Because there were no more options and no chance of rescue. Whats the point of dragging it out.
I am really surprised at how stupid some people are and how little they know about the human psyche.
By what? For all they knew they were the last people alive. That is the idea for the whole ending. After seeing the giant monster at the end, and believing there could be other things out there as big or bigger it's to believe they were the last.
I agree, I would attempt to survive, its not something you can really control, if your scared your going to react by trying to get away from that which scares you, and if you had seen carnivore torture beasts hiding in some mist wanting to harm you, possibly consume you or use you as a nest for there young, I garentee you would choose a bullet over being the new mother for a thousand spiders who repay you for your pain by consuming you.
All along the damn movie they strive for survival and do everything they can to survive and they just drop down at the end which is contrary to what they did all along the damn movie...
It doesn't make sense.. rats have more survival instincts than the actors at the end...
WTF, Come on !
No wait... let's just drop dead and cry more... He broke the promise he made by breaking himself, monster of a father for killing his child...
@darkstar6909 Those are all good reasons but they in no sense apply to everybody. Actually the fact that the most active people who've been fighting all the time just gave up in such a lame way dissapointed me. I can guarantee you there are people out there who'd rather get torn to pieces protecting their children to the end than shooting them in the head. but i guess the point of the movie was to show the decadence of the human character.
at least it was better than the books ending where it leaves you hanging this ending shows what happens after the car sequence, This movie had every single detail from the book and even a bit more, the only thing they did not have was the kite monster that was like a mantaray that shot tenticles down to eat you.
Holy crap. I saw this movie just a few hours ago, and i still can't stop thinking about it. Probably the best horror film of the new millenium. The ending was great! So anti-hollywood! That pharmacy scene was intense!
stonecraft47408....nope, the addition has nothing to do with Arrowhead...what they added happens AFTER they pass a road sign for 'Hartford' (where it SHOULD end) and what they added is depressing, pointless and annoying...;(
I've waited a long, long time for a film version of one of King's best novellas. It looks like the filmmakers did justice to this classic. I just wonder how the ending will be.
its nothing like the book ):

I LOVED the movie even though parts of it indeed were annoying. It's still worth watching IMO :)
What i liked the most were inter alia:
- the concept (depiction of mechanisms that lead ppl to ridiculous fanatism in times of fear)
- the rich world of creatures from hell with realistic animations.
-the role of Marcia Gay Harden
-reference to "Starwars"
-The last scenes in the car and the ending

Wow. Way to give the ending, dumbshit.
"how stupid can a YouTube member be..damn"
PolysaturatedFat 4 years ago 5
he knew there was only four bullets he didn't want to let the others have a horrible death!
nano61 4 years ago
then why did he do it?
JinKazama92 4 years ago
Well probably because a quick death is preferable to;
A) Starvation - they didnt get the groceries when they left
B) Waiting for something to get inside and eat them - eventually something big and bad enough would come along and do just that (maybe you missed the giant Cthulu monster)
C) Because there were no more options and no chance of rescue. Whats the point of dragging it out.
I am really surprised at how stupid some people are and how little they know about the human psyche.

yay but if it was me in the car i would have ran for my life hopen to be rescued
bassfishinfever 3 years ago
By what? For all they knew they were the last people alive. That is the idea for the whole ending. After seeing the giant monster at the end, and believing there could be other things out there as big or bigger it's to believe they were the last.
darkstar6909 3 years ago 3
well yay but i still would have ran untill death or rescue but in this case it would have been rescue lol but yay i get what your sayin
bassfishinfever 3 years ago
I agree, I would attempt to survive, its not something you can really control, if your scared your going to react by trying to get away from that which scares you, and if you had seen carnivore torture beasts hiding in some mist wanting to harm you, possibly consume you or use you as a nest for there young, I garentee you would choose a bullet over being the new mother for a thousand spiders who repay you for your pain by consuming you.
tetsunosuke1 3 years ago
All along the damn movie they strive for survival and do everything they can to survive and they just drop down at the end which is contrary to what they did all along the damn movie...
It doesn't make sense.. rats have more survival instincts than the actors at the end...
WTF, Come on !
No wait... let's just drop dead and cry more... He broke the promise he made by breaking himself, monster of a father for killing his child...

So one point it gets across, or tries, is that humans are a greater danger to themselves than the danger surrounding them.

@darkstar6909 Those are all good reasons but they in no sense apply to everybody. Actually the fact that the most active people who've been fighting all the time just gave up in such a lame way dissapointed me. I can guarantee you there are people out there who'd rather get torn to pieces protecting their children to the end than shooting them in the head. but i guess the point of the movie was to show the decadence of the human character.

i noe the ending waz crazy i felt bad 4 tha guy. but overall the movie waz awsum!
JusSimplyME22 4 years ago
at least it was better than the books ending where it leaves you hanging this ending shows what happens after the car sequence, This movie had every single detail from the book and even a bit more, the only thing they did not have was the kite monster that was like a mantaray that shot tenticles down to eat you.

Awesome movie, loved it. What a twisted ending!

Holy crap. I saw this movie just a few hours ago, and i still can't stop thinking about it. Probably the best horror film of the new millenium. The ending was great! So anti-hollywood! That pharmacy scene was intense!

It reminds me of silent hill a bit I mean mist, monsters, crazy cult you see?
tetsunosuke1 4 years ago

stonecraft47408....nope, the addition has nothing to do with Arrowhead...what they added happens AFTER they pass a road sign for 'Hartford' (where it SHOULD end) and what they added is depressing, pointless and annoying...;(

I've waited a long, long time for a film version of one of King's best novellas. It looks like the filmmakers did justice to this classic. I just wonder how the ending will be.

The Mist is one of my FAVORITE King stories. I am so glad they made it into a movie. I hope this is as good as the novella!
