It would be great if the guy let the notes ring for awhile so we can hear how long the notes sustain. @ 5:27 the guy says "very democratic answer!" Do you mean "diplomatic?" Hilarious!
I've come to the conclusion that it's impossible to accurately evaluate compression pedals on Youtube. Chorus, flange and delay videos can be good - but compression is too subtle an effect. You have to "be there."
Signa sounds great once he rolls the tone knob down... roll that knob down and increase the level and I'm sure it could as fat as the Tone Press. It does have a nicer character in my opinion as noted below.
I suppose, if given a firm choice between the two, I'd DEFINATELY prefer the Signa over the Tone Press. The Signa seems to have a lot more brightness and bite to it, and, on those merits alone, could also come in handy as a treble boost. The Tone Press, on the other hand, seems to exhibit absolutely NO tonal color whatsoever; Flat, muddy, honk-y and just plain BORING are among the adjectives that could describe the 'Press, IMHO.
I haven't played a Signa Comp, but I have tried a Tonepress quite a few times and I can truthfully say that it is noisy and an all together boring pedal.
SigmaComp has a ridiculous amount of highs. o__o Sounds way too thin for me. Tone Press sounds full and defined, I'm actually waiting for my unit to arrive now haha. I know for a fact it's gonna sound fan-flippin-tastic with delay.
best A/B comparison I've seen ever although the volume setting on the Tele might have changed the truth of the compression. I like my Digitech but hey, I also like Brussels Sprouts and slow cars, strong milky Kenyan coffee and hair that smells like an armpit just before it stinks. Anyway, love your guitar before it loves your brains out xxxx
Oh my friend gearmandude if you knew the troubles I've had with finding a comp pedal. It's cool that you demoed the Tone Press cause I keep hearing it's a really great comp, I've never had the chance to try out cmatmods pedals. At this point I'd take anything unless it was a EHX Soul Preacher.
I have owned both the Barber and the Signa Comp. The Barber's pumping is very noticeable - I noticed it coming through in the video in places. Both are too noisy for me. Also, the Signa doesn't have much compression/sustain happening until about 11 o'clock.
The Barber has a mix control which is very handy and will get some serious rubber if you set it accordingly.
My final choice was a Keeley and I like it a lot. However, there's not a ton of difference between the three!
I was blown away when I heard the Tone Press in person. It doesn't effect the tone like other comps I've used. It reminds me of a great studio comp. I will be getting one soon.
I liked the tone press better Jack. I am not much of a compression type, I only have one to keep my levels right, this is more of a country tone compression and thats just not my thing. Thanks JackBlack

Sigma-Comp - sounds slightly brighter, quieter but sounds like it has more sustain
Tone Press - sounds warmer, louder and a little more squashy on the pick attack

Tone Press wins. Can you do a Diamond Comp vs the Barber? That's the shootout we all want to hear!

@12guitdown, lol, that's somebody else playing, it's not gearman. So nope, no 2nd pair.
He states right in the vid he has somebody chicken pickin for his demo

@dyingforastrat Oh yeah! My bad. I realized it after I watched it.lol
Yeah, so I guess he really only owns one pair of shoes after all.

TonePress wins hands down.

The Tone Press feels smooth and big compared to the Sigma. The Blend knob is probably one of the best features ever in a comp.
Love it!

Barber has a internal colour pot which people forget about im sure setting that to vintage would open it up a bit

personally I liked the signa comp better
it would have been nice to see these demo'd with a strat on the neck pup
what do people think about the BBE opto stomp?
I play funk with a heavy right hand and the BBE works pretty good for me

SigmaComp passing to much TREBLE. Sounded best when it's Tone control was rolled all the way backat 3:03. Cool comparison
carlfia 3 years ago 4
I totally agree! I keep my tone control almost all the way "off" and that's definitely where it sounds best!
Great pedal/great company!
mrcali68 3 years ago 3
agreed, i guess its more of a treble boost than a roll off?
tragictravisty 3 years ago
I think it all depends on one's style of playing..
The Signa Comp sounded like it has a smooth, wider sonic range than the Tone Press.
Tone Press sounded narrower but is more aggressive and dialed in for those who know what they want out of their tone.
Just like Bam said, both great for different applications.

It's JackBlack and KyleGass!
Repetitive jokes aside, great demo again. Although I'm a bit confused as to what I'm meant to listen for when utilising a compressor pedal.
