simply because before americans got there, Afghanistan was ruled by Taliban, which India did not support/recognize. Even before Taliban gained control of Afghanistan in 90s, India had very good relations with Afg.
It was the Pakis that brought in Taliban in Afg and created turmoil there. You act as if Pak is all innocent, when truly it isn't. Pak has always had ambitions to control Afghanistan, and thats why so many Afghanis hate Pak. So where does India come into the picture?

There cannot be a independent Kashmir. An independent Kashmir will be taken over by either Pakistan or China. And that would have security implications for India. Also there is the question of access to river water. The lives of 1 billion Indians cannot be held hostage to a view that divides the world into believers and kaffirs. India cannot give up the parts of Kashmir it holds now. The Kashmirs better get used to that.
