Nice vid. I have one of these as well, and can't imagine listening to vinyl without it. You should look into getting a Milty ZeroStat gun as well; static build up is a large source of noise during vinyl playback - zapping your record surface before and after cleaning on the VPI and before and after playing each side makes a huge difference in sound quality. Also, for really grimy thrift-shop vinyl, using a manual Spin Clean before the VPI makes a huge difference.
Thanks for this video. Can you clean 45's and 78's with this machine? I also have tons of 16 rpm Seeburg records that need to be cleaned and transferred. Only thing with the Seeburg's is the center hole, it's an odd size larger than a 45 rpm record. Is there some kind adapter that comes with this machine? Thanx...
I can't understand why VPI charges 20 dollars for 8 oz of cleaner, I've made my own and it works great. I took 1 gallon of distilled water, a quarter cup Jet Dry,and a quarter cup of 2 x ultra ALL (free and clear) you have to rinse with distilled water. So easy to make and so inexpensive.
I have an AEOLIAN COMPANY 1916 record that I would also like to upload and even more so, learn how to properly clean it. I am in need of someone to guide me in this matter. I look forward to your response.
Nice review! I have the same machine and it is amazing the difference it makes. It has brought back some thirft store records to like new condition for me. Even some new records that sound dull, once cleaned sound amazing. Alot of small details like depth and sustain really stand out after cleaning with the VPI. Checkout my videos - I use the machine before recording each video. I demonstrate the machine in the begining of the Don Slepian video.
I've heard of the Spin Clean, which I've heard works perfectly. Obviously this is a vacuum, and is somewhat automated, so it'd work better, but I'm sure the Spin Clean works almost as well. It's $79 on Needle Doctor. I'll have to pick one up.
Nice purchase, i'm kind of surprised you didn't have a machine already. I have been cleaning this way for a while with a home made wand attachment for my home vac and a "turntable" I made from a lazy susan. Its really an amazing difference how much you can improve the sound.
Hey, Dan, I've recently started collecting records, and I ordered some plastic sleeves off of eBay, but they're pretty poor quality. Can you post a link to wherever you buy yours online or the brand? I'd appreciate it.
Man you have tons of vinyl, and that unit is such a good choice. Way good to care for it all. You suck! Just Kidding. Glad to see you have one of those. I have considered it, but congrats. Kind of a pain, but you've convinced me for what I believe is such a superior method of cleaning the vinyl. That box say's you got a brand new one. That's very cool. :)
This is a nice cleaner. I am going to buy one similar to this one soon - it is called "Okki Nokki" - i think it is not available in the US. It is pretty much the same. Have fun listening to your "new" records once again!
interesting note- I had the SAME problem with Le Noise regarding the static- I never had that happen. I thought something was wrong with my copy as well. I cleaned it up well and it sounds great now.
congrats! now you're officially a "big league" record collector! as much as i hate to admit it after all these years of collecting, without that machine i'm still just a wanna be record guy! i love it,how it works, simple operation, there's nothing i don't like about it!
I have one of these and I hope no one gets the impression that it makes bad (very dirty ) records sound like new...it won't. I use the steam method with my VPI.
A second cork mat is a must. Don't put a clean record on the mat that just had the dirty side of a record on it. Also some type of destat device is helpful as these vac cleaners build up static.
Check out the guy (sorry, forgot his name) that uses a VPI and steam. If you can't find it, I moved it to my popuri playlist.
Cool! Indispensable is right. I've been using this same model record cleaner since 2001 and I love it! I kept my original VPI cleaner fluid bottle but now refill it with my own simple mix these days. I mix 500ml of lab grade isopropanol with 1500ml distilled water, add two drops of ivory soap. It works great and lasts me for months of cleaning.
i'm jealous bro! i have wanted one of those for years, and definitely qualify! once you have this machine you wonder how you ever made it without one before. i've also heard of this fluid that makes a non-detectable protective film between the vinyl and the stylus.found it once here on youtube and didn't write the name down! maybe you've heard of it.
@punktexas thank you! i've seen the steam guy and at first the warping freaked me out a bit.but it eventually straightened out and was clean as a whistle.
Awesome demo. Have over 2k LPs. But low on cash.... for now. Thanks!
