They had a different set of priorities governing where they lay their efforts. From a modern perspective it seems more righteous or... wise to have devoted efforts, as a race, to the collection of knowledge concerning not our place on earth but our place in the universe. The pure majesty of the night sky and it's transition from night to day, then blaring sunlight casts darkness to the horizon. It's enough to make me wish I had experienced the world as they had.
