As I remember it, Jimmy Webb wrote this song because he visited a graveyard outside of the USA for American soldiers buried in the 1800s and most of the headstones had the deceased soldiers' hometown as Galveston, Tx
I'm proud to call my self a Galvestonian. Not many people on the island like it here but just don't see it's true beauty. I love my island and always will B.O.I. for life!! :)
The album I saw had Glen campbell dressed as a World War One Doughboy I think Glenn or the record companies had this in mind when he sang this song anyway, Vietnam and all, had such a negative symbolism for the civilian public.
The troops no doubt saw it from a whole different perspective.
Keith Urban is wrong about it being about Vietnam, though. Jimmy Webb said he had the Spanish-American War (1898) in mind when he wrote it. (Galveston was a hugely significant city in 1898, until the Hurricane of 1900 destroyed it).
Oooppps, sorry but this song is NOT about the Vietnam Conflict, but the Spanish-American War. Leave it to an Australian to understand American history. (Can't hit those high notes, either. This is GLEN's song.)
@AssholeRick69 I agree . He could not even get the name of the war right. I think the war in the song was the spanish /american war . Jimmy Web himself said that so that the song would not be taken as a protest /anti war song .
Those protest songs were very big at the time ( '68,'69)
@wamij2 You are so right. Glen Campbell gets the trophy on this. You can have a great song but with a marginal performer it goes nowhere. Glen took this song to legend status. As it is today. A Classic.
having been brought up with glen campbells galveston i was suprised to enjoy this version. it was refreshing. The song is so good even my dog would sound good singing it
I'm laughing at the people criticizing Keith's rendition of the Galveston. He obviously changed the key, which is normal for us artists to do. the song was made famous by Glenn Campbell...not by the songwriter ......give Keith a break ...atleast for those of us BOI's.....born on island (galveston)

@Ogorek69 Hi Ogorek : Then poor Jimmy must be getting soft in the head because that goes against everything he's been saying up to now.

@guarddog22 Back then Vietnam was a very taboo thing with the public.

Beautiful song. I always love it. Good vocals but man, the acoustic pickup on his guitar sounds like HELL. Very distracting.

This song was actually about a southern civil war soldier stationed at Ft Bolivar.

He didn't hit the high note.
How disappointing.
But nice to hear an Aussie singing with a Southern American accent. :-)
bigpinkears 2 years ago
@bigpinkears his voice sounds a little raspy he might not have been able to sing the highest note, due to vocal fatigue.
I thought his inflection was well done though.
Chivalryaintdead 2 years ago
sure, he did well, and it's pretty. i'm still disappointed about him not hitting the high note, though. :-(

RodWilliamsMusic 2 years ago
I agree with you, Rod. I thought this was a very respectful cover of "Galveston".
The only thing...he didn't change the key as you stated. Glen Campbell's cut was in F, and so is this version by Keith Urban.
texjazz99 2 years ago
Keith, oh keith, you need to get your facts straight.......
The song was originally about a soldier in the Spanish-American War (1898). Campbell's version was released at the height of the Vietnam War.
dsjan66 2 years ago
This is actually a Jimmy Webb tune, not Glen....

Keith compared to Glen is sadly lacking. Doesn't even attempt the high notes in original song.
