  • @ 0eyese....Wow!

  • As I remember it, Jimmy Webb wrote this song because he visited a graveyard outside of the USA for American soldiers buried in the 1800s and most of the headstones had the deceased soldiers' hometown as Galveston, Tx

  • Glen Campbell sang it right the first time!

  • I'm proud to call my self a Galvestonian. Not many people on the island like it here but just don't see it's true beauty. I love my island and always will B.O.I. for life!! :)

    Amazing song too :D

  • great cover i think, but by far he aint no Glenn Campbell, and thats no put down either.nice job Kieth

  • dreadful

  • The album I saw had Glen campbell dressed as a World War One Doughboy I think Glenn or the record companies had this in mind when he sang this song anyway, Vietnam and all, had such a negative symbolism for the civilian public.

The troops no doubt saw it from a whole different perspective.

  • Keith Urban is wrong about it being about Vietnam, though. Jimmy Webb said he had the Spanish-American War (1898) in mind when he wrote it. (Galveston was a hugely significant city in 1898, until the Hurricane of 1900 destroyed it).

  • @guarddog22

Hey Guarddog - Jimmy was on CBS Sunday Morning July 31, and he said it was about Vietnam'

    Cheers,

    Ogorek

  • @Ogorek69 Hi Ogorek : Then poor Jimmy must be getting soft in the head because that goes against everything he's been saying up to now.

  • @guarddog22 Back then Vietnam was a very taboo thing with the public.

  • thank you for remembering how this ripped our guts out

  • What a nice tribute to our soldiers,I remember Vietnam.and it felt like war to me..

  • Oooppps, sorry but this song is NOT about the Vietnam Conflict, but the Spanish-American War. Leave it to an Australian to understand American history. (Can't hit those high notes, either. This is GLEN's song.)

  • hehe Galveston is a girl.. hes not singing about the town.

  • @Mustang1973mach1 hehe Yeah it is the the town . And the girl he left behind in Galveston.

  • I live in Galveston and the place is a dump . Mostly crack heads , liars and thieves .

  • @dfd1469 its not about the town.

  • @dfd1469 yup, Galveston is a the mecca of bullshit.

  • Keith makes it sound so sexy!!!

  • It doesn't quite sound right without the brass, I like it though!

  • cool love it

  • Love this version by Keith!

  • Great cover

  • He butchered this song.......what an ASS CLOWN!!!!

  • lol

  • @AssholeRick69 I agree . He could not even get the name of the war right. I think the war in the song was the spanish /american war . Jimmy Web himself said that so that the song would not be taken as a protest /anti war song .

Those protest songs were very big at the time ( '68,'69)

  • @AssholeRick69 I guess you could play and sing it better?

  • @AssholeRick69 You are an asshole! Hahaha

  • i love keith urban (:

  • Check out Ritchie Nevada

  • Beautiful song. I always love it. Good vocals but man, the acoustic pickup on his guitar sounds like HELL. Very distracting.

  • glen C. still gets the trophy. j.webb is a great writer.

great song and a great tribute by keith!

  • @wamij2 You are so right. Glen Campbell gets the trophy on this. You can have a great song but with a marginal performer it goes nowhere. Glen took this song to legend status. As it is today. A Classic.

  • This song was actually about a southern civil war soldier stationed at Ft Bolivar.

  • He didn't hit the high note.

    How disappointing.

But nice to hear an Aussie singing with a Southern American accent. :-)

  • @bigpinkears his voice sounds a little raspy he might not have been able to sing the highest note, due to vocal fatigue.

I thought his inflection was well done though.

  • sure, he did well, and it's pretty. i'm still disappointed about him not hitting the high note, though. :-(

  • @bigpinkears around this time keith was having vocal problems.

  • I second that good young Keith did a great and wounderful job loved it..

  • Jimmy Webb wrote many other great songs as well as this masterpiece.

  • having been brought up with glen campbells galveston i was suprised to enjoy this version. it was refreshing. The song is so good even my dog would sound good singing it

  • I'm laughing at the people criticizing Keith's rendition of the Galveston. He obviously changed the key, which is normal for us artists to do. the song was made famous by Glenn Campbell...not by the songwriter ......give Keith a break ...atleast for those of us BOI's.....born on island (galveston)

    good job keith.

  • I agree with you, Rod. I thought this was a very respectful cover of "Galveston".

The only thing...he didn't change the key as you stated. Glen Campbell's cut was in F, and so is this version by Keith Urban.

  • Keith, oh keith, you need to get your facts straight.......

The song was originally about a soldier in the Spanish-American War (1898). Campbell's version was released at the height of the Vietnam War.

  • This is actually a Jimmy Webb tune, not Glen....

  • @tattypatty Glen Campbell made the song "Galveston" a hit.

  • Jeeez Keith blows my mind. He can sing any song and sounds so good. !!! Keith you got so much talent. YOU RE AMAZIN!!!!

  • Keith compared to Glen is sadly lacking. Doesn't even attempt the high notes in original song.

  • I was at this...it was the Grand Ol Opry at the Ryman Auditorium back in 2001 or 2002

  • This is great. I love the way he does this song

  • Think it's from Grand Ole Opry in 2001.

  • Thank you

  • Hey, I live in Galveston. I needed this now. Lots of devastation here. thanks.

  • I absolutely love this... I have visited Galveston Tx. The last 3 years.. It is ( Was)

so Beautiful.. Since the devastation in o8, I'm not sure how beautiful it is now.. Thanks for the post

  • where was this recorded?

  • I'm not sure. This is not a new recording however, probably from the Blue CD/Golden Road Era.

  • i asked around and mot people think its from 00 - 01
