i have one of these (well, not the rick steves one but similar) but I also carry a security cross body bag for things like money and things I need easy access to. the backpack is too cumbersome to get into with any great frequency when you're out and about.

why not just use zip lock bags instead of packing cubes? Zip lock bags cost less and they are lighter in weight.
