In my opion, in the modern world, a film isn't good unless it either has John Williams music, or Stevens directing it. So really, this film is the best we could do, do slam it, Its getting remade again in a few years any way.
The music track playing in one of (if not all) the trailers for War of the Worlds is not part of the actual official soundtrack. Indeed, the music of the trailer was most likely simply chosen due to the emotions it invokes or for any particular reason, the track in question that you may be referring to is named Gothic Power, if I am not mistaken it was composed by Christopher Field.
The film was fabulous.. but.. it was an American interpretation designed to woo an american audience. I'd love to see the movie made in the original time, 1890 something.. and stay true to the story and the musical (without the musical if you know what i mean). The musical album is awesome.. but not suitable for the big screen.
I agree, the film was amazing. The first 25 minutes is one of the best 25 minutes of a film I've seen.
I love how the filmed it all in an ordinary setting/street at daytime on an ordinary day, instead of night time over a city. Makes it much more believable and scary. It goes against human instinct that daylight is the safest time of the day.
I have seen Schindler's List, but it's rubbish. It's one those movies that people think are important, like the Godfather or Casablanca, but are actually shit.
this doesn't even come close to the 50s movie. Not to mention Jeff Wayne's musical version and Orson Welles radio broadcast. It's just more proof that Spielberg really isn't that good.
i saw the original and yes it was fucking amazing and no this cannot compare but sepreated it is good and your a moron to think Spielberg isnt good you obviously havent seen Schindlers List with Liam Neeson
maybe cuz this is a modern version, and btw its much better! Now, don't get me wrong, Orson Welles is one of my role models. So tis Steven Spielberg, cept he is high up.
@Truth118 Erm, have you even read the book? It's set in england at the beginning, so it doesnt follow the story that well :/ read the book and you will see that it isnt close to the film
@alia313 Yes indeed, the movie is a century later than the book which was written by H.G. Wells in 1870 and is considered by many to be one of the greatest Sci Fi masterpieces ever written. On a personal note, I would rather say that the book is an immensely profound analysis of society and the human mind/will and is very intens. Hence I would gladly recommend it but bare in mind that the movie and the book are quite different both in their depiction of the subject.
Noone would have believed that in the late years of the 19th century, human affairs were being watched from the timeless worlds of space.Noone could have dreamed that we were being scrutinized, as a person might scrutinize creatures that swarmandmultiply in a drop of waterFew men even considered the possibiliy of life on other planets. And yet, across the gulf of space, minds immeasurably superior to ours, regarded to this earth with envious eyes, and slowlyand surely they drew their plans against us

no one would have believed in the early years of the 21st century. that our world was being watched by intelligenceses greater than our own. that is men visit them self's. the way a man with a microscope might scotillis the creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. with infined conplacency men went to and frow about the globe confined of our emperor over this world.
yet the across the gulf of space intellex, vas and cool and unsemantic. regarded our planet with invensys eyes. and slowly and shirley. drew their plans agianst us
I did not like the aliens being turned into toads. There was a specific reason Wells used cephalopods, he was making a commentary on evolution and specifically how the Martians have developed from human into parasitic brains in need of blood transfusion as they lack a digestive system of their own (and I like the flippant way Spielberg said that Octopus had already been done - where?).
Seeing that the lightening (a plot hole) activated the craft and that they were probably hiding dormant for aeons (this could be a Lovecraft reference, afterall he admitted to being a Wells fan and the Old Ones share many features of hte Martians and their 'cyclopian' tripods, like tentecles, amoral etc) I was hoping Spielberg would go further and suggest that hte martians are a wholly cybernetic species whith transferable, transmitable concioussness (in essence, becomming unbound conscious)
i'm highly pessemistic about remakes in general, esp. if they are not truer to the origional story- but this was a great movie- never have been so scared at the theater. The soundtrack was a huge part of that-
A lot of people criticise this movie because it foccusses more on how a family than the real action e.g how the army fight the aliens off, but I like it better that way, it has such a better touch of humanity too it. Love this soundtrack.
Indeed, and in the extra content DVD I believe the script writer, or co-writer clearly mentions that they intentionally removed any focused references on the military efforts during the invasion.
The potential problem is that the aliens are so powerful that the only thing we'd see anyway would be tanks and troops constantly dying. So portraying what's left of "us" outside of the combat is all that's left to see against such an annihilator.
Those who criticise Spielberg's film have obviously never read the book. The book is about one man and his brother's experiences. So really, Spielberg's film is just an updated version of that. The only fighting in the book is personally witnessed (Woking, Weybridge/Shepperton and Tillingham bay)
I think too many of these critics went hoping to see another Independence Day.

Indeed, if such a thing would happen I believe that we would have no chance to survive as a species. Maybe there would be a few lucky shots here and there, like in the movie, but nothing to entirely stop a global invasion.
Let's just hope that so called intelligent aliens wouldn't travel trillions of kilometers just to kick our arses (taken from Independence Day). That wouldn't make them that intelligent after all huh?
well, i'm sure if they did come to earth, they would be just as coutious as we would be. they wouldn't kill on sight, just like we wouldn't kill an alien on sight, we would see if they were friendly or not. so i don't think we're in any real danger.

Personally (I know I'll get many negative comments after I say this), I like this film A LOT more than the crappy Jeff Wayne version...
It's a WAR, not a MUSICAL...
Also, the music in this film is better (considering John Williams is one of my favorite film composers), it actually fits the mood of the film...
And it's not some crazy Dance-Party'ish shit like "The Eve of War"...
This is waaaaaaay better than the shitty Jeff Wayne Version, go ahead, flame me, SEE IF I CARE.
