  • I had to laugh about the radio

    :)

  • WOW I really enjoy hearing about WWII...its amazing that you have these letters....treasure them forever!!

  • @gilbertblaze Thanks Gilbert. I have so many of these and need to get back into making the WWII videos.

  • @CountryComesToTown yeah more WWII vids will be great and also growing back that Goatee :) :)

  • I was thinking about these letters and wondered if there were anymore! And yep...here they were! I think I'm caught up for now...:-)

$10...good thing 10 bucks went a little further in those days! Wow...he didn't have his own bed? I take it everyone just took shifts in the beds too? Oh yeah...those radios were BIG and heavy in those days! I forgot all about that! Thanks for another wonderful walk through history, Jim! :-)

  • These are really cool. Great idea you had, Jim.

  • Thanks Adrian! Glad you enjoyed them.

  • Wow, the radio thing... so much of the tone of what your dad had to say is timeless and yet that reference really plasters it on the timeline firmly.

    :-)

These are great, Jim. Thanks for sharing them.

  • Hey Curt. Yeah, I had to laugh at him saying he wouldn't have a radio. LOL I can't imagine what it would be like for us if we had to go back in time and live like that today.

  • We'd all go bonkers for at least the first week.

And everyone's Twitter and Facebook jokes would be completely lost on anyone who didn't travel back in time with us.

  • These are wonderful slices of life, Jim... Some things made me laugh and chuckle from our 21'st century perspective, like the radio that's too big to take with you when you move...

  • I know Andy, that radio remark made me laugh also. LOL Amazing what has changed since 1943.

  • What's even more interesting is how people and their attitudes have changed since. Can you imagine what people in that time would say about the war in Afghanistan, or gay marriage, or any of the other issues in the news today? The world and people were very different then. I believe one reason why my dad left this world in 2007 was because he couldn't understand it anymore...

  • Again another 5 star for the letters. Wow, 20 below zero and only $10.00 dollars. Keep it coming. Thanks! ~Andree'

  • Thanks Andree. I appreciate you watching. -Jim

  • One of my fellow boot camp members from the south had to do pushups while the company commander read his letter to his folks (he screwed up somehow). He was complaining of the "damn yankees", and amusingly, the CC pointed out that our other CC was Philippino!

  • Great story Drew! Thanks for watching.

  • Another great video Jim! It seems your dad is a bit homesick now. I got a kick out of the guy from NY being an ok guy! LOL Can't wait for the next video!

  • Hi Barb. I also got a kick out of the New York comment. Thanks for watching!

  • Its so odd to hear someone say that a radio is too heavy too move, wonder what he would make of an iPod? Thanks Jim:-)

  • Daryl that that true and can you imagine if all of us had to live with only radio and no tv, computers, internet, cell phones and iPods? lol

  • just don't let the WWII era German scientists have an iPod! Dang, it makes you wonder what our technology will be like in another 50 years!

  • John it really does. I mean to go from an AM radio being a big high tech luxury to what we have 66 years later is amazing!

  • Wow 25 cents doesn't seem like much but when you compare it to today it is extremely high. You figure 20 bucks is a months pay then 2000 today so that would be a piece of candy for 25 bucks goodness thats high. Very interesting!

  • Hey there Dee. It's hard to figure how it all compares in today's dollars but I got a kick out of that 25 cent remark as well. LOL Thanks so much for watching! -Jim

  • Jim, your dads letters are so interesting. I love listening to them. Two of my dads older brothers served in WWII also, but my paternal side of the family weren't much for letter writing, they all just love to talk. I can't wait to watch your next video!!!

  • Thanks Diane. I'm glad that you are enjoying them. I realize there is only a small audience interested in this sort of thing but I've enjoyed going through the letters and sharing them here with my YouTube friends. Thanks for watching! -Jim

  • Hey Jim... enjoying.. Wow... only $10.00 a month and insurance is $6.50. I could not pass up the boardwalk taffy either but lawdy 25cents is highway robbery! Good...You left us with a cliff hanger...Where he will be stationed? Hummm

    HugZ sugar! JoJo

  • Hey Jo Jo. I had to laugh at that 25 cent remark also. LOL Yeah, I think the next one will have a move to the next station. Thanks for watching! -Jim

  • Oh these are just so sweet.

  • Hey Marge. Thanks you!

  • Jim, I have really enjoyed this series. The next time I see my grandmother I want to ask about letters that my grandfather wrote while he was in the Navy-he always told the best stories about it and hearing these letters have let me think about him as a young man in the middle of the ocean. I miss him greatly and I carry his dog tags in my wallet. He only served a few years but I think it gave him skills he used his whole life. Thanks for sharing this history with us.

  • Thanks Carey. Hopefully your grandmother kept the letters from your grandfather. I enjoy all these old letters and stories also. -Jim
