I watched the Director's Cut version and I really loved it. It was the only Alien movie that made me both laugh and cry. Shame this and some other great scenes were left out.
@newdefsys Disagree. Resurrection was by no means a "Good" movie, but it was better than the third. That movie was just garbage. Of course I could just be saying that because it ruined the ending of the best movie in the franchise. As far as I'm concerned, 3 never happened. Ripley and Newt went on to live happy lives.
@DathanielTDK You wont catch me defending Alien-3. So I have no argument with you on that.
But I did find the humor of alien-res too slapstick. I starting to loose faith in Alien-res after General Perez' death scene, and all hope was lost for this film after the birth of the hybrid alien, which looked ridiculous.
But the scene where Ripley enters the clinic to discover her botched clone twin is one of the best acts of the entire franchise, more memorable than any scene in A-3...
I have to agree with 613leaderclint, I cannot understand either why they took this scene out, one of the mistakes of the movie was portraying ripley as a cold, unemotional "thing", trying to pass the alien dna to the public, but, what made ripley such a strong character was the soft, emotional side she showed, while being a leader and a strong woman.
Thankfully, this scene was reinstated for the extended edition available in most box set releases. Silly to cut it out, especially since it took up so little time, but I suspect the producers were worried that only fanboys would understand the scene and the majority of the movie going public wouldn't remember who newt was or would be too stupid to make the connection. They might be right, but it never pays to pander to idiots, even if they are the majority.
Why was Newt killed off anyway in the original script she survived but then they came up with the crap rushed rubbish of alien 3,again why was this then left out ??
IIRC, in Aliens there was a deleted scene of Ripley learning that not only had her daughter grown up without her, but she was dead by now. Interesting that this plotline keeps appearing and being repressed.
Sigourney Weaver is such an incredible actress, to me it really didn't matter about the storyline etc. Her performances never cease to amaze me, so in my opinion the movie was good because of Sigourney Weaver's beautiful acting skills.
Just read down the list of how many people say they should have kept this scene in. This was Imperative for Ripleys Character! This is the only reference to Make this movie link with the others, not even the Aliens had the effect that this scene provides!
Tragic scene really...It's like Ripley remembers having a daughter or even her time protecting and caring for Newt but because its been over 200 years and there are gaps in her memory as a result of the cloning process, she has the emotions for an image of a little girl but doesn't know why or remember why.
@jango52577 yes, I totally agree. The tragedy element was powerful and one of the only redeeming features of the story (a story that was clearly forgotten when Whedon wrote the screenplay and the producers got their hooks into it). I don't think there ever should have been another movie full stop - but if they HAD to make another, this element should have been the focus; Ripley being influenced & taunted by the memories of loved ones long gone amongst the inhuman greed & coldness of the future.
This movie was a total clusterfuck. Kind of an entertaining mess, but still a huge mess. WTF was up with the alien getting sucked out through a little hole in the ship?
Without being cloned, if a human host can survive a chest burster surgically, would it's DNA develop the same senses and strength as the Ripley 8 clone and the xenomorphs? Imagine that. Cuz in the alien chronicles, I watch every host, man or animal die without being reborn again except for Ripley.
I cannot believe they took this segment out! I cannot believe it! So many poor choices made by the director and then on top of it all he deleted this? It would have been one of the only truly emotional and genuine scenes in the entire movie. And Weaver's acting, going from recognition of little girl (newt) to happiness to sadness is very effective.
@613leaderclint, for me it's rather a reference to the director's cut of Aliens, in which you can find a conversation between Burke and Ripley, when she asks about her daughter. And the answer is that she's no longer alive cuz Ripley was in hibernation for over 50 years. But still that deleted scene from Resurrection is good :).
through out the movie I saw with the deleted scenes this and where she tries to remember newt is sad because she has flashes of her that much is implied but she can't remember her name, really sad
@TheBlackBird11 I think one of the reasons why they cut the scene down is because it reminds us of Newt, and you're right, it does. But the problem was it started to slow things down a bit and you needed to get on with things.
@yahoo9317 perhaps, but the 'action' in this story was not well thought out or scripted. For me the only redeeming feature of the story was Ripley coming to terms with her memories of loves ones lost to time and finding her 'human' side therein. So scenes like this, and moments in the novelization where she fondly remembered Amy, Newt, Hicks and Jonesy, are in my opinion the only things that should have stayed :D
