This song is depressing to people who haven't heard it before. But to me it has much importance, happy memories, of my parents, not one bit depressing at all to me x
I played guitar in the group that backed Ricky Valance at a hotel Christmas gig many years ago in Mablethorpe. I found him arrogant and full of his own self-importance, not someone I would want to back-up on another gig.
I know this won't go down well with his fans but you can only speak as you find.
I know, I shared that stage and arrogance with you all those years ago (Grange & Links) - mind you, not bad, basing a whole career on a song recorded 51 years ago (lyrics by the Bee Gees?).
@jizmacdacusha haha why's that? you attempted to refute all modern music regardless of genre, simply by saying that it's sickening to your ears; I think you were referring to rap/rock'n'roll/metal (because that's what you said I should go and listen to). And I never said this music was bad, I said the video was gay, which it well is. You're the fucking idiot you idiot.
@ShaolinPete go back suck your moms tit little kid you come on here just to look at random videos just to say bad things about it, if you dont like the video then choose another one you dont nhave to go and comment shit that your posting so truly you are the idiot
My mother and I used to this song all the time all the time. Now that I think about it, it seemed a tad out of place for a child singing this song with exuberance as I have!
BEA-UTIFUL!!! Sang with class in a classless world... We once spoke with eloquence and purpose. Our language, expression, and culture is now diluted with lazy english... BLAH!!!!
this song makes me cry =,( especially the part "as they pulled him from the twisted wreck with dying breath they heard him say tell laura i love her" it always gets 2 me...
I honestly prefer this version more than the Ray Peterson version. Sounds more romantic. The Ray Peterson version is definitely more emotional and tragic sounding but I really like his voice in this. Maybe it's because I heard this version first.
No. Pure fiction from songwriters Jeff Barry & Ben Raleigh. Back in 1960 'Death Discs' were very popular. But the BBC hierarchy at the time considered that songs dwelling mawkishly upon teenage premature death were simply 'Too tasteless and vulgar for the British sensibility' and the record was indeed banned! It became something of an anthem at UK stock car race meetings and Ricky Valance even took up stock car racing himself for a while!
My name is Laura :) I was named after my moms sis who died at a young age :(she was only 21 ,she was very sick and it was 2 late ,the guy she loved got married many years later to a woman who looked a lot like her(laura) but he was never happy after her death .She was a very loving person ,few years after he got married he died ,he was sick too .May their soul R.I.P .:)

You all know what happened to Laura's racing beau don't ya? Well he wounded up down in hell and the devil with a pitch fork and pointy tail mocked the beau while beau was shoveling hot coal, saying "Tell Laura I love her!" "Ahhhh shut up and shove it" came the response -
What most folks don't know is that Charlie Ryan was artistically drag racing this song - funny as all get out!
