As a DM, this is the reason I like to give at will and encounter powers in the form of a scroll or credit for a good background story as to the character's history.
Two-Weapon fighting now sucks in in 4.0 Rogues and Warrior get no two-weapon abilities... WTF happened!? A woods man can fight with two weapons but a fighter that studies nothing but weapon combat doesn't know how to two-weapon fight.... pretty stupid.
Kerbe3, what you got to understand for combat is that it is all happening at once, there is a split second between when the first person in initive goes and when the second goes, your thinking of it too clear cut when its not
I think fourth edition has brought more life to combat, but at the cost of roleplaying, which, in my opinion, is the core of the game, if the roleplaying had more stuff then it would be great
I don't agree. 3.5 and all the xtra books removed(in my group) all the focus from roleplaying... it became all about combining rules to make the most effecient character...
I was very sceptical, when I saw 4.0 a first... I thought: "why have they made DnD into a MMORPG?"... but now I've found out, that the simpler system allows for more roleplaying... it has had a great impact on my group... we all roleplay more...
Um challenging a monster to attack you was never a major action in 3.5, it's called a free action. However you must remember that one round is 6 seconds, this means if there are 5 monsters and 5 players, 10+ actions happen within 6 seconds of each other. I don't care if talking is now a minor action, it still must fall within less then 6 seconds of time, calling out a monster might take what 3 seconds? then you say something to your party that takes another what 4 seconds? uh oh, round over.
4.0 was shitty as fuck i waited in line at a local gaming store till midnight for this piece of shit and the next day i was pissed that i waited 1 year and wasted 115 bucks on these damn bookes trust me stick to 3.0 and 3.5
It's refreshing to hear someone express opinions similar to my own as regards to 4e, as opposed to the usual "Dood, made it like video gamez" attitude. An intelligent, nuanced review was a breath of fresh air, even if I didn't agree with every opinion expressed.
Wow thank you very much for this review guys it helped me out alot i cant wait to play DnD with my friends awesome review im going to go see part 2 now :)
The new addition is more like a roleplaying version of diablo, than D&D. It's the same skill-tree system used. I enjoyed diablo somehow, but not as roleplaying game. Also, basically all powers from all classes are battle-based. The good thing is, that the classes have become more even. The mages doesn't pwn the fighter-classes so much, mostly because, the mages deals seriously much lesser damage with their spells. See that as a + or - it definitely helps the roleplaying somehow.
I don't really care for even the 3rd addition. I use a combination of AD&D rules (mostly because I didn't want to buy new books) and my own rule and system changes. Working on abolishing the class system, and just using skill points. Will try it out anyway.
to remake the game in such a horid way just so you dont need clerics it wrong and moronic my group do not like to play clerics and have not had one in any of there parties for the last 7 years and they have been just fine we are into story telling not just fighting in a normal 8 hour game we only have 3-4 combat encounters
I to am annoyed by the changes, but I'm more interested in playing with my friends than in how irritating the system is. Hopefully I can get some more gaming in this weekend and I'll let u know if things get better later on.
You think you could just have a martial party, no clerics at all, and still make it?
I think what I like is broadening the utility of the fighter a bit, giving them more options. And the move options sound much more streamlined (we tend to just talk through it, not use too much movement mapping, so I'm not sure how this would affect our games).
It's all about dice and rules. 4th ed is for kids.

D&D designer : " I lost my girlfriend, it was horrible.
D&D designer2 "want to have gay sex?"
D&D designer : Are paladins holy?

In my opinion martial classes are more fun in 4.0, but casters are more fun in 3.0/3.5
It is VERY different so I understand why people would prefer one over the other

dont waste your time with 3 or 3.5 its flawed its unbalanced it doesnt flow smoothly.
4 ed has all those things + more
its not at all a complete rebuild its the same game but now its polished.

3.5 is still the best. As for people saying that 3.5 classes not being balanced dont know how to roleplay them!.

4.0 isn't neccasarily a bad system, but it's not a 'DnD' system either.

@tarboy62 Which is why you never needed a Cleric.

You could absolutely do it without a cleric. In fact, I think that's one of the objectives they had with the system. :-)
