The BBC is a fine institution - one of a kind globally. I don't watch TV on there often but love its radio and online content.

Obviously you will need a PVR (record off tv to hard disk and play recordings back on tv).
Radio? My, how mid 20th century... Go hit up some decent podcasts and listen to those. This whole Radio thing is so old hat. I haven't really listened to the radio in ages, no point, I prefer to listen to my choices in music rather than some idiot disc jockey's.
Geriatric 1927: I can understand your frustration. After having established a comfortable routine, having it changed on you isn't fun or very enjoyable; however, it can give you the opportunity to grow and change if you take a positive outlook on it.
I wouldn't consider this an issue between youth and age myself. There are probably many young people who feel the same way as you do. Businesses just sometimes make mistakes on what their consumers want. My recommendation: either go ahead
with changing your schedule and going to bed after 3:00 am and getting up after 9:00 am ... or try and see if there are enough people out there who agree with you and convince the BBC to move this particular guy to a different time slot.
The first option is much easier, and allows for more personal growth -- but the other one could be a interesting experience too!
Chris Evans is a complete and utter idiot! He completely ruins everything! I mean his little bell he rings after every comment just shows how much of an idiot he is!
I despise Chris Evans with a passion. I'm eighteen and I love Radio 2 to the distain of my friends. I find myself switching to another channel in the morning; however, because the sound of Evans makes the milk in my tea curdle. Thankfully I have Isle of Wight Radio which is aimed at a similar audience.
I don't know about the new guy or the one that was replaced, but I will research them both.
IT JUST HIT ME!! I'M SURE THE BBC CAN BENEFIT FROM A BLUES PROGRAM AND WITH THE WONDER OF ELECTRONICS, THE PRESENTER CAN PROBABLY DO HIS SHOW FROM HIS HOME!!!!
Chris Evans may be a very good presenter (even if I don't care much for his style), but I have to say that radio2 is not the right arena for his talent.
What on earth possessed the BBC to put him in this prestige spot which was so skillfully crafted by Terry Wogan?
Perhaps it is a cunning plan by the BBC to get rid of us older listeners.
Thin end of the wedge Peter, in the words of private Fraser we're doomed.
Oh, and I agree with you. Everything these days is about being flashy instead of smart. The new DJ you're talking about is probably a total git, considering the industry today. And it's not that you're old and uncomfortable with change, I'm 23 and I totally agree with you!
You should try radio 7. It has plays and books acted out by some superb actors. Check out the Terry Pratchett series they are doing just now on BBC i-player.
I don't think they are dumbing down at all, although I have to agree that some DJ's egos need to be brought down to earth occasionally.
They did the same thing to CBC here in Canada. They replaced all these veterans with total morons, some who had had their shows for about 25 years. I'm 20 years old and they're claiming it's for younger generations. They changed the television format to more of a US-style of presentation and have gotten rid of their in-depth reputation.
It's an awful mess.
I can't listen to the radio during the day anymore, either - their only good people are on late at night now. It's a damn shame.
Top 40 (Radio 1) jocks are probably in the habit of "talking up" the songs they play... trying to "hit the post" (either a dramatic moment in the intro, or the exact point where the vocals start)... which is REALLY ANNOYING to almost everyone else... but they don't care. Their peers (other djs) think its cool and compete somewhat to to it tighter than anyone else. Probably shouldn't do it on Radio 2.
I am in the U.S. and I got hooked on the BBC news a few years ago. I enjoy it...I find it more fair and balanced than CNN/Foxnews....I do hate it when they switch someone you like listening to the news about, it's very frustrating...and it can start your day off poorly!
Peter,I understand how you feel.I'm in Indiana and it seems like every time I find a channel that I truly enjoy, something or someone gets changed, replaced or removed.I know how Spintown7 feels also, because I remember Gary from several years ago.Great D.J. Good luck Peter on your quest with the new hours, but make sure that you do get the right amount of sleep.Your fans care about you.Sandie
I don't listen to Radio2 but I do listen to Radio1. i have the same issue as you - boring, often just blue-collar and crass content (moyles, westwood) occupies hours of the day. i like scott mills, but that's all i listen to on radio1 - a deadzone IMHO, otherwise.
I feel your pain Peter. I listen to WLW700 here in the states (Ohio), and recently a favorite radio personality of mine retired (Gary Burbank). They then replaced him with 2 guys that are offensive & not really very entertaining. It's really the only station I enjoy listening to, but now there's a big block of time that I can't even stand listening to it every single day.
Have you tried writing the bbc? I had a complaint about a television news program I watch here in the US and wrote directly to the host. She changed it. On the whole, however, I think radio and TV is trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator as a rule. They no longer have reporters, but now have news readers who couldn't put together a complete sentence without a teleprompter to save their lives. I hate it.
The BBC dumbing down? What's new Peter. Chris Evans is a 46 year old teenager, or thinks he is. I can't understand why they hired him as they previously fired him for not turning up to do his Radio 1 shows, a few years back. He thinks the show is about him. Take solace in the fact that if his ratings drop drastically from dear old Terry's, he won't last long. That should happen, but if it doesn't, I am afraid you are out-voted.
I think that al the FM ones are aiming towards the ADD generation(i,e, my generation) where everything seems to att 1000mph and sugar fueled madness but I think that if you want quality you have to go to the worldservice. Chris is the opposite of Wogan I just dont get how they replaced him with Chris. Ah well what can yea do
Your right! Everything is aimed toward a younger audience now. I'm only 37 and I've already grown out of the target market. So I basically can't stand about 90 percent of the media. :-)
Maybe they have to dumb themselves down to gain the younger audience, the ADD generation, if you will. that is increasingly being dumbed down by video games and television. What, this guys ADD is so bad he can't even listen to a song without interrupting it? I listen to talk radio or a local university music station who's announcers talk TO the people ABOUT the music rather than AT the people about how great it is to spend your money on junk you really don't need.
Dear Peter, why not do something positive about this situation? You are well known enough to ring them and hold a conversation with Chris Evans and explain yours and lots others' points of view regarding talking over music. If he is clever enough, he'll either stop or reduce the number of voice over that so annoy the public, including me!
Talking over an interview subject is the worst thing a jounalist can do. YEs I would choose another activity while Chris is on. BBC GET RID OF CHRIS! Everything should be aimed not at youth but at intelligence and civil behavior.
You know, I have to say... I have difficulty figuring out what to talk about with most people my own age (twenties), because I'm generally not interested in (or know nothing about) the subject of conversation. In other words, I don't hold conversations by quoting TV shows and movies, nor do I keep up on the celebrity gossip or reality shows. My favorite radio stations let you listen to the music without talking over it, and when they DO talk, really connect with each other and their listeners.
I thought this may've just been in the US, but I've been feeling that many aspects of the media have increasingly dumbed themselves down to gain a wider audience and make more money. They of course lose a lot of their most loyal listeners that way, and aside from gaining money, these businesses often drift away from their original mission statement because it often needs to be compromised if they are going to have sufficient funds to operate the business.
Anyway... maybe this video of yours will gain some exposure and echo more opinions from that station's listeners, and hopefully make a difference for you. : ]
im not sure whether or not its a sign that BBC is dumbing down though, ive heard this over and over, and it will happen for as long as i am alive (im 18) that people will say "Tv is dumbing down",
i say, The BBC is a bus, not a taxi, i personally dont like Chris Moyles, or Jonathan Ross radio shows, and what i do is, switch over to Radio 4. or Five Live.
but its for everyones enjoyment, the targer audiences of Radio 2, throughout the days stays pretty much constent
I know what you mean - how about giving Radio 4 a try? I think that really is a station to be enjoyed by all ages, and certainly hasn't been dumbed down just yet!
You will have to find someway to record it that's all. I do that with the TV all the time now and fast forward through adverts. So glad to see you and hear your thoughts.
In the 1930's there was a nationally acclaimed humorist by the name of Will Rogers (in America) who is attributed with saying, "Show me a man who says civilizatioin is advancing and I'll show you an egotist."
I think Chris Evans was good at his 5 to 7 slot because that is what he has being accustomed to. He has just started the morning slot so he might get better over time. But who I can't stand is Steve Wright. He isn't funny (even though he thinks he is) his speech pattern his annoying and having a three hour show Monday to Friday isn't enough for him so he has a pre-recorded Sunday Love Show which is unbearable. Well thats my thoughts anyway but I understand your view.
The dumbing down is nothing new,at least not in the US it isn't. And I know the UK is always the guinea pig for everything. They try it there first, and then it comes to the US.
Couldnt agree more. The DJ's have become presenters over the years lovingb the sounds of theirbown voices, not the records that they were supposed to be playing for the pleasure of the listeners. They are not Disc Jockeys anymore.
The BBC has been dumbing down since the early 90's, especially regarding television. I remember the days when Radio 1 used to be good. I would never tune into that station thesedays. Radio 2 has been my favorite station (followed by radio 4 comedy and drama), but I have'nt heard Terry Wogans replacement. If it's Chris Evans, i won't bother listening to him; he always did love the sound of his own voice.
You are right Peter, the influence of youth led culture will dumb down everything.
BBC iplayer is good for listening to Radio shows if the times the presenters you enjoy are on don't fit well with your lifestyle, you could have a programme from the evening before playing at breakfast time on your computer.
Chris Evans isn't for everyone, and is very different in style to Terry Wogan so I can understand him changing the whole flavour of the show-and if it was a show you liked as it was then it wouldn't be a good change!
I still reckon the BBC are far superior and less dumbed down than other broadcasters, although I do tend to watch TV rather than listen to radio except in the car.
The Evans boy is, always has been and ever will be the most irritating little fecal deposit ever to have soiled our planet. The best enertainment he's ever provided is my on-going fantasy wherein I set about his malformed cranium with a lead pipe vigorously and with obscene pleasure.
They want to make people dumb, just look at the rubbish they try to tell you is "music" these days, mind numbing rubbish. Music should be smarter than that
I definitely think there is a lot of change going on with the media right now - Sometimes broadcasters get it right, and unfortunately sometimes get it wrong.
There is a lot of discussions about BBC and which age group it appeals to. Of course I'm unable to comment =]
But what I will say is there are always alternatives. I personally listen to LBC 97.3 - intellectual discussion on current events etc. But as you rightly say, it's a shame when a show is replaced with something unpleasant.
The mental image of you shouting at the radio, Peter, just made my day. I understand you very well - not because I listen to UK radio, living in Norway and all - and I would be doing the exact same thing. If it isn't broken, don't fix it!
Terry Wogan was not welcome on my TV screen but I got used to him on Radio 2. Chris Evans firstly struck me as ignorant and brash, however with a more lengthy listen he does appear to be reasonably intelligent. However it is not what I want to listen to so i am more inclined to migrate to Radio London. BBC Radio 2 only gets me as an audience when I am travelling further afield or radio London is taken up with boring sports programs.
I live in Germany and I listen to Radio 2 and Radio 4 over the internet. I can relate to your feelings, since my favourite show on Radio 2 is Mark Lamarr's God's Jukebox. It is on so late, that I often listen to it on the replay option on the internet, Not the same as live I know, but I thought I suggest this option of re-listening over the internet to you anyway.
UK television is as bad, unfortunately they have let women get into high positions in the companies and they have a strong bias towards womens programming. There is precious little of interest to the average man on either. I know this will be considered to be a troll but it is not. In general men are not interested in watching the same shows.... in my case I only occassionlally use my TV set which is when I have my girlfriend here. Otherwise it just does not get watched.
This actually has some truth to it, in America the History Channel used to be my go to station for quality programs. A woman took over the the programming and now it is all reality shows and specials about doomsday prophecies.
I've always seen Radio2 aimed more at the middle aged market(even though i'm only 19!)and obviously as time goes by,the people who've out grown Radio1,migrate to Radio 2.I wouldn't say the BBC is dumbing down,I'd say it's more moving with the times.I personally agree with geriatric1927 and prefer Radio2 the way it was,but I guess the only way for stations to survive is to keep moving on with the times.Personally, I listen to the Magic network as they play more of the music I prefer to listen to.
I'm more of a Radio 4 person myself, but I've taken up listening to podcast shows on the way to work and back lately.
(Downloadable MP3 files recorded every day or week.)
When I heard the news about Chris Evans, I was surprised for the idea that his audience has much overlap with Terry Wogan's, but then my impression of him stems really only from his shouty "Big Breakfast" persona, which was a long time ago. I wonder if he's matured since then.
I live in the US but often listen to BBC radio 1 on Sirius / XM. Almost all of the daytime 'presenters' talk over the beginning and the end of the songs. It is very annoying. I don't know if it's dumbing down as much as a short attention span of today's youth.
It's not just TV though. The education system is a joke these days as well. It's all by design to keep us quiet and stupid and entertained non-stop, so we don't do any real thinking, and the global elite can carry out their plans unhindered.
TV is getting worse, and yes it is dumbed down. One of the worst channels by far is ITV (and its sister channel ITV 2). They produce non-stop trash aimed at the lowest common denominator - no offence if anyone watches those channels.
Terry Wogan has a very peaceful voice, but listening to Chris Evans is like listening to a shrieking banshee. CBBC shows have been dumbed down extremely.
Chris Evans has done quite alot for up and coming bands by putting them on the radio and getting them the exposure that they deserve and i respect him for that.
Dumbing down? Probably true as it's happening all around the world. The quality has been dropping slowly but steadily, and we've also gotten some pretty horrible new stations/presenters where I live.
BTW, maybe someone forward this video to the BBC? :)
Steve Wright is much much worse. Hang the dj

I am appalled at the lack of positive suggestions here as to how the BBC could address the quite obvious issues surrounding Mr. Evans performance.
I would proffer the following:
they could remove all sugar from his diet.
If there is no noticable improvement, then remove all food colouring from his diet.
If there is still no improvement, then remove all food and drink. Then, within say a fortnight or so ...... problem solved!

Keep up the videos! I enjoy your perspective!

I despise Chris Evans with a passion. I'm eighteen and I love Radio 2 to the distain of my friends. I find myself switching to another channel in the morning; however, because the sound of Evans makes the milk in my tea curdle.

You should try radio 7. It has plays and books acted out by some superb actors. Check out the Terry Pratchett series they are doing just now on BBC i-player.
I don't think they are dumbing down at all, although I have to agree that some DJ's egos need to be brought down to earth occasionally.
TamHickey67 2 years ago

I hate it.
thizizliz 2 years ago
The BBC dumbing down? What's new Peter. Chris Evans is a 46 year old teenager, or thinks he is. I can't understand why they hired him as they previously fired him for not turning up to do his Radio 1 shows, a few years back. He thinks the show is about him. Take solace in the fact that if his ratings drop drastically from dear old Terry's, he won't last long. That should happen, but if it doesn't, I am afraid you are out-voted.

My favorite radio stations let you listen to the music without talking over it, and when they DO talk, really connect with each other and their listeners.
omgoneleven 2 years ago
I thought this may've just been in the US, but I've been feeling that many aspects of the media have increasingly dumbed themselves down to gain a wider audience and make more money. They of course lose a lot of their most loyal listeners that way, and aside from gaining money, these businesses often drift away from their original mission statement because it often needs to be compromised if they are going to have sufficient funds to operate the business.
omgoneleven 2 years ago
Anyway... maybe this video of yours will gain some exposure and echo more opinions from that station's listeners, and hopefully make a difference for you. : ]

im not sure whether or not its a sign that BBC is dumbing down though, ive heard this over and over, and it will happen for as long as i am alive (im 18) that people will say "Tv is dumbing down",

but its for everyones enjoyment, the targer audiences of Radio 2, throughout the days stays pretty much constent

Nice rant Peter.
I must say, i was never a fan of Terry Wogan, but...
I'll admit i've always hated it when DJ's talk over the music. They should respect it, not ruin it.
I'm afraid radio seems to be more about entertainment, than the actual music these days. That's a great pity.
Janice Long & Bob Harris are two great examples of DJ's who really love & respect the music that they play :)

It is on so late, that I often listen to it on the replay option on the internet, Not the same as live I know, but I thought I suggest this option of re-listening over the internet to you anyway.
Hope you find a solution that suits you well.

When I heard the news about Chris Evans, I was surprised for the idea that his audience has much overlap with Terry Wogan's, but then my impression of him stems really only from his shouty "Big Breakfast" persona, which was a long time ago. I wonder if he's matured since then.
