  • Smetana named this quartet "From my life". That makes it very autobiographical. As such, IF he were gay it would be of importance. But he was not gay. However at the time he composed this music he was practically deaf, and also struggling with mental sanity and other effects of syphilis. In the fourth and last movement you can hear the one sound he was still capable of hearing; tinitus.

I hadn't heard this for ages. It's as beautiful as I remembered it. Thank you for posting this treasure.

  • apariantly gay people are better at writing music and painting pictures

  • I love this quartet; and I don't care if Smetana was gay or not. His music has no sex but beauty. Thanks for sharing this treasure.

  • Well I would like to see you do better.

  • FANTASTYCZNYYYY UTWÓR!!!!! wspaniałyy naprawde wspaniały :))))!!!!

  • great post thanks... I'm trying to find the tokyo string quartet's recording of death and maiden on you tube but no luck.. I'll have to settle for the alban berg quartet even though it's a very good rendition, I just like the tokyo string quartet's better... thanks silentsteps

  • No problem; I'll have the rest of the quartet soon.

  • wow I thought you were full of it at first but then I had a listen. pretty weak. I saw Tokyo SQ perform this in Ottawa years ago. Was fantastic. Can't wait for my next chance to hear this Smetana work live again.

  • But interestingly enough I picked up the smetana string quartets rendition of the 130, and even though their pacing to me is little weird, man they have some highlights that were so rich it'll knock your socks off.

  • I agree... I feel no emotion... I don't know how to explain it :P

  • I have a CD by the alban berg quartet doing their rendition of Schubert's Quintet, it's a much older rendition than the one on youtube, but I like their pacing, and emphasis better. I had the guarneri string quartet's rendition of Beethoven opus 130 which I like alot.. then I got juilliard's which a like just a bit more... they really goodhighlights to me...
