You know, instead of just being starstruck drooling over Mr.Smith. I've got to say he's got an excellent suggestion/advice on here. My forte is rock but I've been in cover bands playing a variety of music from Metallica to Van Morrison and he's right, you have got to learn to listen and develop your ear because for me there's no sense in delivering a half assed version of say Brown Eyed Girl, you've got to play that song like you wrote it in the first place.
2. And you just can't stand in a corner of the stage and by yourself for yourself. Learn to listen to your bandmates because they're your team mates. Teams work together to make things hum...fly. Developing an ear teaches you how to listen. For years I didn't know that there was a choppy rhythm guitar on Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song till I heard it on a stereo with one speaker with only half the mix going. It will also help you in the long run writing your own music.
A really fantastic jazz album for anybody wanting to find out further how great both Smitty & Kevin Eubanks are together is an album by bass player Dave Holland called Extensions. It came out in 1990 on the ECM label & is one of the greatest jazz fusion albums of the last 20 years.
The Kevin Eubanks album Turning Point is another one of my favourites too.
@peecee2000 - Thanks for bringing up Extensions. If I were stranded on a desert island and were only allowed to bring 10 CD's with me, that one would be among the top five - it's a modern day classic. It's unfortunate that so many people judge Kevin and Marvin based solely on their Tonight Show gig when, in reality, they're some of the baddest cats on the planet.
y wud someone not like this video......smh

I own a Pearl Smitty Smith brass snare. One of my best, tune it high-tune it low--it is a bad-ass drum. Get one if you can find one!!
