I DO think that her performance seems to have been informed somewhat by Kristin Chenoweth's, which is NO CRITICISM AT ALL. There is only so much that one can do to play this differently, and singers who abandon the humorous choreography to concentrate strictly on singing are taking something away from the characterization (IMHO).
I have to give props to any singer who performs this, for "Glitter And Be Gay" requires a vocal agility that I do NOT have and never did.
If you compare the tempo to any of the major recordings of this aria, it is MUCH faster. Too fast for anyone to sing those notes staccati over an orchestra, especially a student. She does a great job with it dramatically, and as well as could be expected vocally, given her age and the circumstances.
@trailblazingdiva it's not too fast, and it should be done this fast. she just clearly isn't a trained coloratura, and isn't capable of doing those ha runs correctly
Haha that was brilliant! But yeh, like many others I have to admit i just came on to compare yours to Chenos...But wow! I was wetting myself during your tantrum! Brilliant! ^^ This just makes me want Candide to come over to England even more!
BRAVO!!!! I'm a Kristen Chenoweth fan, and I must say, you did an excellent job- almost as good as her and better in some areas. :D The jewels being used as puppets= perfection!!!
She is not copying Kristin Chenoweth by putting jewels from the jewel box. Would you call someone flying while singing Defying Gravity copying? See June Anderson's Glitter and Be Gay video, she did the whole jewelbox thing.
Cunegonde does the whole jewel thing, not only Cheno, but Cunegonde. So it is the right thing to do if ur portraying Cunegonde.
A few little problems with intonation, and a slight wobble on some of the higher notes, but overall, a fantastic performance.
I don't care for keeping the American accent on the spoken parts, but that often comes down to whether or not the girl who can hit the high E can mask her accent in speech, so, I won't complain.
surprisingly this is quite good...she looks the part and her pitch and vibrato are perfect. I looked into CUA but decided against it. Going to NEC instead.
actually, i am on Broadway in new york city, and i have no criticism for this fine performance , Kristen Chenoweth, (one good friend of mine), Actually got her choreography from Joseph Steiner, so There was no interpretation. Just for your slight information!, Fabulous job!
Excellent! And she's not trying to copy Kristin Chenoweth with the same comedic antics, she's doing her own thing instead. Vocally she's very good, especially with all the jumping around she's doing and rolling on the floor.
She isn't copying Kristin, the use of the jewel box is a part of the musical's plot. Bernstein intended this song to be a parody of the famous jewel songs from French Opera. The use of the jewel box and humor relating to it was intended by the writers. Barbara Cook used a jewel box with comedic effect in the original production.
shes got pretty good technique, theres definitely potential with some work. It seems that the tone and pitch focus gets somewaht funky in the vicinity of about high C, although its clearly not an issue of range sicne the Eb is solid. Although the over the top stuff doesnt bother me so much the acting seems a bit immature, the spoken lines come off more valley girl than cunegonde.

@trailblazingdiva not true at all, the famous coloraturas have more than enough training to do it this fast.

she could have had a better character voice

And by the way, amazing tantrum. Not sure if I can get away with that in my next symphony concert performance, but I might try. j:)

This is way too fast, that is why she can`t sing all the staccati. Maestro did not help.

Can you do glitter and be gay too fast? isn't that kind of the point?

Very well-acted, although a trifle overdone at times. Good voice, but she needs a little more time to really master the aria.
