I think it's time to visit Bethany on the 2012 OBS day to celebrate 25 years since leaving. If I'm able to make it I may bring a handful to sell for a few pounds each possibly - if there any interest from those watching on line !
hey i currently go here, and guess what, that building (pengelly) still is there. this is increadible. do you have the original copy that you could send me?
Blimey this is so odd.. i was head boy in 1987-88 and was in english lessons with Adam Gardner who makes a fleating appearance .. and yes, Skene the cane man was still around ! Never went back.. but had some excellent times
Mr Ploppy, who art thou?? Gut... how could we possibly forget his mood and gut swings. He was kicked out of the school in a scandal of the kind you may guess at, not long after we left!
Thanks for posting, I left in '87 & was part of the gymnastic demonstration by the pool. I think it was a last practice before the show... or something. Anyway, great memories. Cheers from sunny LA.
@chriswhiting2 Hi Chris, seem to recall you. I left in 79 but my bro, Sandy was your era me thinks.I have mixed feelings about the film.Seeing Skene again has made my day as I secretly quite liked the old sod..but School days were not my happiest and I don't think the all boy environment and male teacher thing was healthy.Thank god my kids never went.
It was great to see the school again. I was at Bethany from 1971 to 1976. I wish i'd had the forsight to make a film like this when I was there. Skene's study! Any prospective students should not consider Bethany if they are thinking about a career in pottery! G'day from the land down under.
I was stil in the first year when this video was made. And I still remember winning the Junior Victor ledorum that summer. I was one of four Malaysian students at Bethany. My uncle Reza and Bidari left that summer.Wonder if you guys remember any 1 of us.
looks just as i remember it, was there 1982--1986,havnt seen the place for 20 years, great memories tho, definately skene catling's room---got the cane in there!!adam gardner was also in the video thanks for posting this nick 127843--think i was in the year below you & tom David N
People say it has changed a lot from then till now, but when I started in 1982 the Sports Hall wasn't there, and the music school didn't belong to the school (acquired when I left in 1987). The Lanzer Building opposite Pengelly was about to start being built. So the place changed alot just in the 80's then even more to now.
The people I recognise in this video: Skene Catling in his study, Adam Gardner who is sitting in there too, James Knowlden playing the clarinet, James Hincks playing badminton in the Sports Hall, and possibly Mr P. Marriot coaching the swimming kids (not sure though). We left the school on Saturday 11th July 1987, the film states that it was made just two days before on the Thursday (9/7/87).
Thanks for the comments - It was great to find this old video again, and I still have a good copy, now on disk now having made it 20 years back, I should praps sell copies next OBS day ! Would be good to share this with Tom as he did help. Someone let him know it's available ! Who is Happysnapper & Benson ?
How funny to see Bethany after 20 years as it was... what a dump! hahaha! Shame I was 'x' streamed, I'd have much preferred pottery and art to all that boring maths and science. I left in '85 but was in Nick and Tig Wilsons year, and only recognise the ghostly Skene Catling in the video... think I'm going to go and lie down now!
This takes me back. I left the school that very month, July 1987. Was this video posted by Nick Lang? As far as I recall there was only one copy of this video and it was borrowed by someone and never returned (naming no names, but his initials are ' D H ' and he was one year below us). Maybe he found it in his house after two decades and posted it. Maybe Tom or Nick had back-up copies and one of them posted this. Whichever way, it's nice to see this!
CONTINUED: I'm clearly being a bit dim here! Nick127843 kind of suggests that this was posted by Nick Lang! I specifically remember Tom Wilson trying to get his copy back, from the person who borrowed it, for several years afterwards. Hoping he'd run into this person on Old Boys Day etc, but never did. I'm glad another copy existed! It's great to reminise about the old place. I wonder if D H still has Tom's copy. D H was in Pengelly just like Nick and I.
Very interesting and quality not at all bad considering the era and processing required since! Fantastic to see Skene in his study - reminded me of my English A level lessons!
I'll try and get a link to this on the OBS web site before long.
can any one tell me if this is still a public school? i went there 1970 till 1976
