  • @Saiko47 this was an episode from when she was one of the doctors companions

  • I love Sarah Jane RIP Elizabeth Sladen x

  • I saw someone who looked just like Lis (and spoke exactly like her) in a cafe today. Needless to say it took all I had to keep from crying.

  • I watched this, looking back at the memories with her as companion, and as Sarah in the SJA series

  • aw poor doctor! 4:27

  • rip lis ill never forget you rip

  • im sad sarah jane died of cancer

  • She knew she had cancer before filming Series 5 but decided to carry on. It is said, she was unsure of her future so filmed alternative scenes... I hope they show the ones she has filmed and then for the final episode: it should be Sarah Jane's funeral... Maybe Luke, Clyde, Rani, Maria, Alan, Chrissie, Jo, Jo's Grandson, Doctor (4) and Doctor (10/11) should all be there??? Thoughts?? RIP Lis- you were so strong..,

  • Well, it's a tribute now :( RIP.

  • The Doctor has lost his greatest ever companion. Rest in peace forever Lis. Always in our hearts.

  • what horrible news. 35 years ago I sat behind a cushion watching her and the doctor....gutted. Simly the best assistant (and actress) the Dr has had.

  • all doctor who fans are terribly upset by this. the doctor has lost a true friend.

  • Rest in Peace Elisabeth, you'll never ever be forgotten by us

  • R.I.P. Elisabeth Sladen.

  • I never bought the re-write of her character as being in love with the Doctor and as being 'dumped'. Sarah clearly left when she wanted to, and was quite capable of leaving a message with UNIT or whatever asking the Doctor to contact her if she wanted. Retrofitting her as a former love interest just cheapens her original character as a very good friend.

  • RIP protecting us form the darleks from afar!

  • RIP Elizabeth Sladen, gorgeous, gifted and talented.xxx

  • @JeanieBM she's dead?!

  • R.I.P.///

  • Rest In Peace Elisabeth Sladen <3

  • What a beautiful soul - so sadly missed - Elizabeth Sladen is fondly remembered by all who's heart she touched with her spirited and intelligent performances.

  • You can't put adverts on what's supposed to be a tribute! This is an outrage. I'm supposed to be paying tribute to a wonderful woman, instead I get Don't Stop Me Now playing.. don't get me wrong, it's a good song but it's not appropriate right now!

  • @Scarperguy It's not a tribute, at least not one intended for recent circumstances.

  • @Occono If it's part of BBC's Sarah-Jane tribute playlist, which is how I got to this video, then yes it is a tribute

  • @Scarperguy Alright. I'm not sure if they can take off adverts temporarily though.

  • RIP Liz, you where a treasure, thanks for being Sarah Jane, you will be missed.

  • RIP...You got to take part in a great story.

  • Miss Sladen...you will regenerate...for real...in a fantastic new world! R.I.P.

  • I'm so sad. :( I'm gonna miss her. I imagine she would have been amazing to know in real life.

  • be missed terribly

  • It's hard to believe she's gone, Sarah Jane was hands down one of the best companions... RIP Lis you'll ne missed terribly.

  • RIP Elizabeth Sladen . . . I loved Sarah Jane Smith.

  • Sad, God rest your soul Elizabeth

  • She will be missed. RIP Elizabeth Sladen.

  • RIP Elizabeth Sladen / Sarah Jane Smith. Such a sad day for Doctor Who :( she will be souly missed T^T

  • 63. young.

  • RIP SARA JANE SMITH, MY FAVORITE COMPANION.

  • I can't believe it! It's going to be weird watching Sarah Jane Adventures now. I'm watching the episode with davros and all the companions together, saw a wee part with her on it, and I almost cried! She was such a brilliant actress, didn't look 63 that's for sure. RIP to an amazing Doctor's Companion. ♥

  • i was just reading on the BBC website that she died this morning. RIP Elisabeth Sladen

  • R.I.P Elisabeth

  • RIP Elisabeth Sladen. You will be missed.

  • @spursmum

    Indeed, very sorely missed.

  • lol i need a sonic scrwdriver

  • 0:50 excuse me i need the bathroom 15 secs later (time passes) ashhh much better

  • There is no way she is 61. She can't be! she looks like a 35 year old!!

  • @allaurae agreed she still looks hot best companion ever. Damn lucky Doctor

  • I think the problem with that episode is that SJ never actually cared for the Doctor like that did she? She knew him mostly in his Third incarnation and some in the Fourth, but I didn't think they wrote their relationship in that way back then.

RTD is just a little relationship obsessed.

  • @RayzokReview In Classic WHO, the Dr and Sarah seem very close to each other; the deep affection appears "family" not sexual. Dr#3 seems father-like to Sarah, being tenderly affectionate and protective of her in Death to the Daleks, Monster of Peladon, & Planet of the Spiders. Dr#4 is alien and clumsily affectionate at best, but angrily asking Harry "Where is Sarah?" in Revenge of the Cybermen shows how deeply attached to her he really is. Dr#4 seems "big-brother-like" to Sarah.

  • @63DW89A That ambiguity was always a huge question mark in the series. Doctor would introduce Sarah as his "best friend", a title he only used for one other...K-9, and that was after his many times calling the robot his"second-best friend", indicating Sarah was still on his mind. Was it romantic? Hmm...4th Doctor was nuts! Child-like! perhaps he did love her but was hesitant to commit.

  • (1) @diddymuck Good points! The ambiguity of the Dr/Sarah relationship as maintained in classic WHO shows just how good the writing was in the Classic WHO-SJS era. My view is that Sarah, who had lost both her parents at an early age, quickly grew close to and adopted Dr#3 as a father; the family relationship continued upon regeneration into Dr#4, but became more "Big-brother-kid sister". Lis was genuinely very fond of Pertwee, saying she cried for weeks after his death in 1996.

  • (2) @diddymuck. On the available DVD's in Seasons 12,13 &14, Tom Baker's comments toward Lis Sladen show just how much he genuinely adores her. That is very unusual as Tom rarely says anything serious about others he has worked with, Lis standing out as the one exception.

I feel the amazing Lis Sladen is the reason for the extraordinary success of "Sarah". Lis made Sarah real and easy to connect with, plus she forged the affectionate close ties with Pertwee/Baker that show onscreen.

  • please David Moffett dont bring back Tegan that aussie accent grrrrrr by the way i'am an aussie.

  • that episode was magnificent. nuff said.

  • david was best doctor i say...

  • @igneous061

A good Doctor yes. Not the best. Baker was good, as was Pertwee. Matt Smith actually brings A LOT of the old doctor into the series, he acts more like the old Doctors then David did. He actually reminds me of the first Doctor at times.

  • @JGruesomeAnimation That's because when he studied up on the Doctor he was really into Patrick Troughton. There's a video of Karen Gilliam interviewing him about that. He said he modeled his Doctor after Troughton's.

  • The discussion of his relationship with companions is really making me curious as to who River Song is. She knows the Doctor inside and out, including his real name. I was leaning towards the possibility that she was a regeneration of his, but there's more than that. And if the Doctor keeps this much of a distance from his companions, its going to be real interesting why that isn't the case with River.

And as she said, when her identity is revealed, that's when everything changes!

  • @NoPawn I always figured that River Song was a reincarnation of The Doctor's daughter's... they haven't used that character since she flew off... not even as much as a mention.

  • @tedescucci And I think they want to use that character someday. River Song might be her, but I don't think so. I have a feeling someone is going to come up from the classic series, which will be before my time, but who knows? I can't wait to find it all out!

  • I was delighted they brought back Sarah Jane Smith. Liz Sladen played her very well back then, and her recent appearances and own series have been well done and enjoyable.

    And she's lovely as ever!

  • AWESOME!

  • Clyde is the new Mickey in the SJ adventures

  • she must work out if she's 61!!

  • She made the transition from kitten to cougar very well! Always loved how Liz brings Sarah Jane to life.

  • Elisabeth Sladen is still pretty hot for a 61 year old.

  • david tennant and tom baker are my favoruite doctors

  • the best bit in the episode is when the two women are having the one upthing then begin slagging him off and he doesn't understand why they're laughing at him.

  • David Tennent is THE best Dr Who... Sorry previous fellows.

  • @paulineprojectlove I agree with u though I don't think we've seen enough of MAtt smith yet

  • Put her in some Andy Pandy overalls and she doesn't look like she's aged much at all.

  • Luckily Sarah Jane's character later became quite interesting on her own show, but in this episode she was retconned as a jealous old bitch by Toby "Sex in the City" Whithouse and Russell T. Davies. Were they seriously trying to imply that Sarah Jane shagged Tom Baker's Doctor behind the TARDIS console every chance they got? What a load of crap! I still can't figure out why people think RTD is so great. He is an egotistical & overrated jerk, and I'm glad he's not running Doctor Who anymore.

  • @icemachine79 I don't think that's what they were getting at - it IS possible for two people to care about each other without having sex... I see Sarah Jane and 4 being more like brother and sister, and if you didn't hear from your brother for years, assumed he was dead and then he turned up fine and dandy, just didn't bother to tell you or anything, I think you would be pretty upset. Remember the "Mrs and the ex" stuff in the episode came from Mickey, not the Doctor.

  • I wonder if Jo Gant returning for an episode would be as successful? I'd like to see Romana return too, but as a proper companion.

  • It would be great to see Katy Manning, Mary Tamm and Lalla Ward onscreen in DW again. I doubt any of them would get their own spin-off series though.

Lis Sladen's star quality was immediately evident in DW from the moment she arrived.

Just watch her first two DW serials, "Time Warrior" and "Invasion of the Dinosaurs" for that fact to jump off the screen. The only companion in Classic DW capable of carrying much of a story on her own, independent of the Dr.

  • I meant something like a new regeneration of Romana, but it would be cool to see Mary Tamm or Lalla Ward again. Imagine the Doctor's look of panic if The Three Romanas ever came to be...

  • @ApocalypseNext Only if they do something new with her character, and not have her get into some kind of stupid cat fight with Sarah Jane over the Doctor. But if RTD is writing the episode I wouldn't be at all surprised if that is exactly what happens. Sarah Jane getting all hot and bothered over Tom Baker's Doctor is bad enough, but imagining Jo Grant getting off with Jon Pertwee is beyond disgusting. But like I said before, I wouldn't put it past Mr. Concrete Fellatio's warped imagination.

  • @icemachine79 I doubt Jo Grant would get in a catfight over the Doctor, since as you recall she left the Doctor to get married. As for her and 3, I doubt they actually "got off" but the Doctor definitely cared for her very much - watch The green Death sometime and tell me that's not one dumped-looking Time Lord. Jo Grant left an impressive number of disappointed men in her wake, last but not least of which was the Doctor.

  • @ApocalypseNext The final scene of The Green Death was probably Pertwee's finest moment, and Jo's leaving obviously affected him deeply. What I'm worried about is RTD retconning it like he did Sarah Jane's relationship to the Doctor and reducing it to a mediocre soap opera love triangle because Jo described Clifford Jones as a younger version of the Doctor.. Toby Whithouse may have been the writer of School Reunion, but it was RTD who made him put in those crass jealousy scenes with Rose.

  • Is Sladen just lucky that she is in some of DW's best shows? Or is it Sladen's presence in a show that makes it one of DW's best? Best guess is she brings something special to DW.

  • Elisabeth's presence.

    She's a legend.

  • @TheDunHorse: I think you are correct.

Looking back over Classic DW, her era really stands out. I now think Elisabeth's talent, professionalism and rapport provided one of the solid foundations for DW hitting its peak.

It's commonly said she was fortunate to be at the start of the Hinchcliffe era. Perhaps the Hinchcliffe era was fortunate she was there for them, as that era may not have succeeded so spectacularly without her.

  • Sorry, this may seem like a random and totally stupid question, but:

What the hell is the Hinchcliffe era?

I agree that you think that her ability to be epic (in my words) has helped to make DW an awesome show, and that's why she's my favourite actress.

  • Phillip Hinchcliffe was DW producer in Seasons 12,13,&14. Robert Holmes was script editor. Together they created the "Gothic Horror" era of DW, in Tom Baker's first seasons as the Dr. Many think that DW's finest shows came from this era. I personally include Season 11 in that era, the final season of the Letts/Dicks/Pertwee era, and the first season for Sarah Jane.

Seasons 12,13 &14 are often called the Hinchcliffe/Holmes DW era.

Holmes also wrote some of DW's all-time greatest shows.

  • I HATE Rose I dunno y I just cant stand her I dont even like Billi Piper

Lis Sladen all the wya she is my hero and is so glam and beautiful for being 61 :O

    Love ya xoxoxox

  • Frankly I'd love to see the writers have Rose meet Romana, a newly regenerated Romana -- to truly put things in perspective. But they would have to change the kind of Doctor that David created as he's a more sexual Doctor, even more so that the romantic, kissing Grace at every chance Eight.

  • i think she says "No, in due time"

  • I think it's "you're a two timer" directed to the Doctor, not Rose.

  • @milan2c no I'm pretty sure its "No, in due time"

  • what does sarah jane say after rose says "im not his assistant!"?

  • No, get you tiger.

  • SJ's ok and a legend in her own right, but Romana's the best for me. For me, in my opinion: 1. Romana 2. Leela 3. Ace 4. Donna 5. Sarah Jane Smith 6. Jamie! 7. Jo Grant 8. Captain Jack 9. Charley Pollard 10. Martha Jones 2nd-bottom. Adric bottom. Tegan!
  • actually Kamelion or even Mel (scream! scream! scream!) rate lower

  • whos adric???

poor rose knowing that her life with the dr isnt gnna last

  • You know Liz is 61 years old. She can shag me anytime!

  • Amen.

    I guess she'd be a GILF.

  • @pig43001 she doesn't look it at all

  • lol this episode is so funny now due to the fact that Rose ended up with the Doctor on a parallel world! LOL, poor Sarah Jane....!

  • David, can you squeeze a bit longer on the sonicing? LOL!!!

  • i didn't really like the whole doctor/rose thing, the doctor shouldn't be in love lol

  • Of course Rose was clingy and whiny, she was like 19 or 20 years old in the show. she has just turned into an adult and is scared. it is like a person going to college and being overwhelmed but on a larger level.

  • How about Adric, return

  • Adric is dead

  • Didn't Adric die?

  • yup he died

  • SERIOUSLY dead as I recall, rammed into pre-historic Earth aboard a starship full of nukes I think

  • Yup. The impact of his ship is what killed the dinosaurs!

  • they filmed this ep in my high school, i was an extra, i had no idea who she was lol :D

  • Sarah Jane is still so sexy

  • The Doctor left her behind because he was going to Gallifrey and humans weren't allowed.

  • Also, Sarah was getting a bit disconnected from her life on earth, plus what he says to Rose in School Reunion, about outliving them, and not wanting to see them age and die. There was a bond with Sarah that he rarely had with other companions.

  • The bond between the Doctor and Sarah Jane was never romantic. I don't believe the Doctor ever gave her a hug in the old days

  • It wasn't romantic for either of them, so I don't like them pinning the unrequited love angle on Sarah Jane. But they might have hugged. I know he and Ace hugged. Ace was 19 and thought too young for the Doctor.

  • Actually all companions are (too young) younger than him - he was a 'grandfather' when the series began wasn't he.

  • Yup, and the character of the Doctor has changed with each new face. Ace was not, if I recall, not overjoyed when the Brig referred to her as the Doctor's "new assistant', but her relationship was more father to daughter.

And no, Sarah Jane would not have behaved in that way.

I didn't mind Rose with Nine, but with Ten both the role of the companion and the image Doctor became more "Mary Sue" fan fiction type characters.

  • Actually, when you think about it, that's a bit cowardly of him and ageist of the writers. Humans age. After all the Doctor lost, why would something natural like age matter? Why wouldn't he love seeing Rose grow and mature? He wants her 19 forever? Midlife Crisis anyone? Doctor One was an old man, had older companions. If he loved Rose, and her humanity then like Jack with Estelle, why wouldn't he cherish the Journey? Rose didn't care as long as she was with him.

  • But Leela Was

  • Where's the cheese on toest

  • Sarah Jane's return was nice, but i'd really like to see Leela return.

  • Alas, Leela died in the time war

  • or did she ?

we've got The Doctor, the Master <& now Timothy Dalton as Timelords why couldn't Leela, or Romana

  • Leela actually survived the time war. There was an audio drama about her after the war,I think

  • It's still debatable whether the new adventures books/audio can be considered canon to the tv serials. The time war mentioned by doctor #9 isn't necessarily referring to the time war featured in the NA books.

  • Although its hard to judge a viewing figure of over 8million on a Saturday night today is comparitive to a massive, massive audience 20 or 30 years ago.

To pull in 8million today is some going. I'd say new Dr Who probably outstrips any viewing figures of the classic series across broad demographics. Its no big secret SJS + DR4 were successful becasue of good writing but broad appeal, as RT + DR10 mirrors.

  • The broad audience appeal of Dr#4/SJS was a direct result of their complementary characters teamed with great writing and production.

The new Series has pulled ratings of 10+ million 4 times to date, indicating that it can pull Classic Who-level audiences with quality scripts and production.

Ratings-wise, the new Series is around the level of classic Seasons 9 and 10, having solid ratings with steady improvement.

  • I adored this episode with a guest return of Sarah Jane Parker. She was my hero when I was a little girl.

  • sarah jane smith

  • Actually atleast half of his old companions simply walked away. Romana, Leela, Jo Grant and Liz Shaw just left the doctor and went on with their own lives like Matha.

Sarah Jane was one of a few he was forced to leave behind for one reason or another.

  • sarah has aged like fine wine

  • Yeah! I can't believe how good she looks after all these years. This was such a cool idea.

  • An amazingly touching insight into the character of the Doctor. Very well done, BBC Writers, and to the actors who bring the characters to life. This is why British TV is the best in the world... nay, the Universe!

  • Brilliant! Touching, and amazing as well!

This has added a whole NEW dimension to the Doctor. I hope the writers continue on this note.

  • WHEN'S ACE COMING BACK TO THE TARDIS?

  • Never. Don't get me wrong Ace surpassed Smith in every way, shape and form but due to the way the show was treated in the eighties the fans who grow up watching it at that time are in the minority, where as those for whom Sarah Jane was their first crush are in a VAAAASSSSSTTTT majority. This I firmly believe is the reason Sarah Jane Smith is regarded as the number one companion.

  • Though Sladen has said that Journey's End will most likely be her last return to Who so once SJA has run its course in a few years we might get a bit more balance the next time the production team feel nostalgic (so maybe I'm wrong about Ace after all) or maybe they'll just move on to Leela.

  • Sarah Jane is the number 1 companion. A show like Who thrives on its fanbase. In classic Who she was with 2 Doctors, did the most episodes, did a lot of the specials & was the first real bridge between falling/screaming & independent companions. However, my favorites are Leela & Romana I. But, the classic Who companion who I think should show up is Nyssa. Underutilized, an alien, stayed on another planet to help cure lepers & the Doctor has never been back. Great open-ended storyline.

  • DrWho pulled in the largest average seasonal audiences in its history when Sarah Jane Smith was companion to Tom Baker's Dr.

The smallest seasonal audiences in DrWho history, were when Ace was companion to Sylvester McCoy's Dr.

Sarah Jane is very highly regarded due to her realistic and down-to-earth portrayal by Lis Sladen. It is easy for the audience to ID with such a realistic character.

It is harder for the audience to ID with "cartoonish" companions like Ace or Leela.

  • I could never stand her personally. Too much complaining and screaming and whimpering. Plus Sladen just ain't no great shakes as a thesp (but how many companions were). Great epsiode but Sarah, not my cup of tea.

  • To each their own!

However, Baker/Sladen pulled in the largest audiences in WHO history, making them the most popular TARDIS team ever, so your opinion of Sarah Jane is in the minority.

Perhaps you have Sarah confused with Rose? Rose DOES do a lot of whimpering, complaining, whining and clinging.

I've seen all the "Sarah" stories, and the funny scene in ARK in SPACE was the only time she ever whimpered.

Mickey screamed louder and longer in SCHOOL REUNION than Sarah EVER did!

  • You are fully entitled to dislike the Sarah Jane Smith character.

However, to infer that Elisabeth Sladen's acting abilities are 2nd rate, simply does not square with reality.

Creating a Sci-Fi character realistic, down-to-earth and believable enough to remain phenomenally popular with fans for 30+ years is no small feat!

I'm not sure how Lis Sladen did it, but her "Sarah Jane" has transcended time,
