Darn, I keep coming back to this movie and I keep laughing my head off and at the same time loving the original Star Trek as much as ever. Ambivalence run rampant. I'm a big time Sigourney Weaver fan but I don;t think she was ever more beautiful or sexy as in this slightly silly but totally wonderful film.

Just an innocent observation, but they wouldn't hear that hilariously painful scraping sound because sound does not transmit in space.

well they are in the port. There are still walls for sound to bounce off of.

But sound requires a medium to transmit a sound wave through - we hear things on Earth because sound waves are propagated through the air around us. Since there is nothing in space (to wave) there is no sound in space.

On one of the other parts of this movie there's a comment about Gorignak (the rock monster). Apparently in a deleted scene it's revealed that Gorignak finds sound extremely painful, and the silence of space is all it will ever want or need.
