  • Great twist on the Mary Hopkin classic! This version seems to be more upbeat. I think hers is more haunting. Love both!

  • I have heard this song and thought it was Gene Raskin singing but now not sure. Whoever it was it's the best version I've heard. Has a very raspy (whiskey) voice but very good. Anyone know?

  • @dennydeed Probably Glenn Yarbrough - guitar, vocals (tenor), the others were Lou Gottlieb - bass, vocals (baritone) and Alex Hassilev - guitar, banjo, vocals (bass)

  • Thank you for posting this (whoever did)... Made me decide definitely to bring this one back into our repertoire in 2012.

    Best regards!

Andy Corwin -- (current member of The Limeliters)

  • Even though I like it :D It's great to be the first one to dislike something :D lol

  • The one dislike was by me :)

  • @akshayzz1 Why?Are you that insecure?

  • I was always amazed that Judy Collins didn't 'cover' this tune. I know that she used to hang out with The Limeliters in those days, and so she must have been familiar with this song. I guess, after reading her autobiography, you could say it was too close to her own travails.

  • Cont'd live concert held in Osaka 1970.

  • Somewhat Russian taste than Mary Hopkin & Paul's. I like this too. Thanks for this upload. All the best, Tomoya, an audience at Mary's

  • thats the original of the covers ;-)

  • Thanks for this very much.

    They remained Russian taste!!

    All the best,

    Tomoya

Enjoy a coverer Mary's version at my channel too. Mine is Expo '70 version. Her purer voice enjoyable.

  • I may own this album. I'll have to check the stack. I thought there was a slightly different version without the odd guitar licks which I think sounds better than this one.

  • So that's how these lyrics were sung the first time?

    Later Mary Hopkin sang it.

But funny, everybody who sing "Dorogoj dlinnoyu" with Gene Raskins lyrics (no matter what language) credits Gene Raskin for lyrics AND music. Poor Boris Fomin, who never heard the english song.

By the way, the refrain of the later Limeliters-Song "That's just the way it goes" sound also a bit like "Dorogoj dlinnoyu"

  • Does this album contain "Wake Up Dunia"? I used to listen to that song all the time long ago.

  • @jbattle Yes it does. I do not own this album, but here's the track list: A1. Sing Hallelujah; A2. Sweet Water Rolling; A3. Funk; A4. Blue Mountain Lake; A5. Tamborito; A6. Uncle Benny's Celebration; B1. Wake Up, Dunia; B2. Die Gedanken Sind Frei; B3. To Everything There Is a Season (Turn! Turn! Turn!); B4. Reedy River; B5. Those Were the Days; & B6. The Minstrel Boy.

  • The Russian song , Дорогой длинною, [Dorogoi dlinnoyu], is completely about something else. I prefer it to this one.

  • it's not their original music, the original music belongs to Boris Fomin

  • Nice song, but others on the album are better. Thanks for posting.

  • Great song squandered in 62 by a poor, uninspired effort by the Limeliters.

  • Fun. They gave this a Russian gypsy cadence. Paging Theo Bikel!

  • Excellent, I was hoping someone would post this ....thanks too
