God bless Poland! I think it great that a reenactment group chooses to remember the sacrifices of our WWII Marines! Poland suffered greatly during the war and in your group I see courage honoring courage! Semper Fidelis!
It all appears to be reenactment coverage. The uniforms appear to be new. Photo quality is too good. These Marines all have clean, shaven faces. It is what it is!
I have posted photos I took in 1973 of Tarawa, Tuvalu, Fiji, Nauru. The photos of Nauru show guns captured by the Japs in Singapore and transported to Nauru. They can be seen on Webshots by doing a search on "coopec100"

WHAT ABOUT THE NAVY DAMNIT? there were more naval personel at tarowa then there were marines. if you honor 1 you HONOR ALL GOD DAMNIT! you have offended me. NO EXCUSES!
The Navy didn't do ground combat with the Japanese , except for the Corpsmen who were forced to. This is coming from a former Gunner's Mate who is very pro Navy, but the Marines lost a gallon of their blood for every drop lost by the Navy in the Pacific.
@HopeDiedScreaming ok so tell me how many tours did you do? I was 17 when I enlisted. I did 2 tours, one in Iraq and 1 in Afghanistan how bout you? If not its ok to be a coward. Leave the fighting to the real men.
@capnhands did you fight in world war 2? nope, so do you have any right to say anyone was more brave then any other? nope. so again, nice try fuckhead. and way to bring in the fact that you served in a different war, as if that makes your stupid ass comment legit... you look fucking dumb lol
@capnhands that comment was totally unrelated... im guessing you ran out of bullshit to spew. with that said, go fuck yourself, thanks for serving our country, too bad your a fuckwit. im done with you.
@HopeDiedScreaming Who the fuck are you to say medics were not the bravest? You've never been in combat or in the military. Your just a smart mouthed punk. probably a fat ass who considers playing Halo for 24 hours counts as a combat tour. Talk shit when you've been in combat.
@capnhands are you still crying about this? my point was that you DIDNT fight in WWII so you have no right to go and say they were the bravest, i highly doubt any other soldier that died there would be irrational enough to say something that stupid. and if you realy gotta know, im 6'2 160 pounds and signed with the marines. gimme a year and by your standers ill be able to "talk shit" ya dig?
@HopeDiedScreaming it matters. not just WWII, medics in all wars are the true hero's. Imagine being on a battlefield with your guts hanging out, bullet flying everywhere. Medics have to concentrate saving lives while dodging bullets. Good for you on the Marines and yeah talk all the shit you want when you serve a tour.
@capnhands i just know that i respect all people who go through that, none more then the other. since you served, im sure youd be pissed as fuck if you went though that, and someone was saying that another person who was in equal danger as you, with a slightly different job, was more of a hero, and more brave and respected. i know that id be pissed. you might not be, and thats your call, but it agitates the shit out of me when i hear that stuff. its like the whole army vs marines thing...
They were ALL Americans regardless of their branch. They were all tossed into pure hell and to me, they are all heroes. I am alive and free because all of them risked their lives for me.
They were the best ever. No generation comes close. Certainly not mine.
Corpsmen were not "forced: wrong word. Approx 1000 Marines KIA plus around 650Navy--they drove the amphibs as you recall--maybe 5,000 Japanese. Amost 7000 in 72 hrs KIA.
WOW! Wrong. The Second Marine Division went to Tarawa with just under 16,000 men, about 9,000 actual combat troops. The Navy did an incredible job at Tarawa, but truth is most Navy were not being shot at. By a quick count of ships and attached personnel, the Navy went to Tarawa with approx. 11,000 men. If you wish I can do the detail:ship type / number / crew etc. And yes, we should and must honor all who serve.....wherever, whenever.
wait what? that wasnt me that wrote that sorry. although i still would argue. i know that there were more marines than there was the navy but there were plenty of navy men on the beaches and on the front. i just think that the navy should be remembered just as much as the marines are for tarawa. the men transported by the ships were mixed with navy. about a 1/4 of the men on landing craft were naval infantry. my grandfather was 1 of them.
lol i left my unit (505th PIR, 82nd Airborne) when 3 huge huge huge guys joined. i mean they are so freakin huge they had to sew two of the largest jump uniforms they could buy together to make a uniform that they could fit!! No lies, im not joking!! Then ironically on their 1st event doing a show for the New Zealand Army they had a full two course army breakfast in the mess then 30mins later they were at the pie cart getting a hot dog!! then they couldn't fit in the trench for the display!!!!!
To "Eye4Lites"- I'm a former Marine and I took no offense at this at all. My great uncle was at Guadalcanal, by the way. Anyway, this was just a reenactment, and I'm actually happy some guys in Poland are remembering the sacrifices of the WW2 Marines when most Americans could give a care.
Agreed. Most Americans don't even know of this battle and don't care. Remembering the sacrifices of those Marines is very important, but the reenactment doesn't do the battle or the sacrifices justice. I know, I know it's just a reenactment, and it is good that someone took the time to do it, but to others who know nothing of this battle or Marine infantry this almost looks like it was easy.
This re-creation makes it look like some glorified Hollywood movie. Marines laying around reading letters, looking at pictures in pretty little dressed out foxholes, sitting outside of a hole...give me a break!! Or maybe this little video is supposed to represent late day three around Green Beach.
Did you even watch the video? It shows dead marines being buried too. The pictures of individual soldiers outside their foxholes provides a more personal look at the men who fought at Betio and, IMO, brings more reality to that battle than film of battleships firing and artillery shells going off does.
Yes, I have watched it many times. I will give you that it might provide a more personal look at the men in the field. But to honor the Marines who fought there, don't make this look like it was not three days of absolute hell.
With the Marines at Tarawa is a pretty good visual of the battle, and, the "personal" side. Although this was somewhat sanitized for release to the American public due to the intense graphic images. I have seen a film shot by both Marine combat photographers and civilian correspondants that was truly uncut and horribly graphic. I believe it was called "Bloody Beach Red". I believe that it was the foundation for With the Marines. I can't find it on the net anywhere though.
My wife's Grandpa was at Tarawa with an Acorn unit and 15 other islands. He still can not talk about it. The music does it justice. No talking needed I guess.
why are people hating on this?

By "forced" I imply that some Corpmen had no option but fight for their comrades and their very own survival.

That is 100% true, i agree, but i still appreciate their love of history and a devotion to get involved in reenacting.
I have been reenacting since about 1978 mostly ACW north and south but in the last several years, i have been doing WWII USMC, USA, USAF and German.
