Ben Bradlee and Sally Quinn restored the house. Ben Bradlee was the powerful editor of the Washington Post who helped bring down President Nixon (watch "All the President's Men"). Sally Quinn was his much younger wife who was the Post's society and features editor type. I'm glad they didn't demolish the house. So many rich people would have lied to Little Edie and then found some excuse like dry rot to tear it down and build a McMansion.
apparently little edie undersold it to some media person who charmed her. she was persuaded to just hand over the key and walk away from grey gardens, she even left all of the contents and the new owner found many letters and ephemera, but i got the feeling she despised the beales and didnt value the the stuff as artefacts.then turned the house into stepfords wives suburbia, real shame
That's a load of crap. She sold this house for good money to editor Jill Quinn. All the furniture was wrecked in the attic. No one stole anything, dsspised anyone, or did anything wrong. Even suggesting that is ludicrous! Did you just dream that up? Where do you get your assumptions?
Although very attractive..it's seems to basically counter much of what the Beales ..especially Big Edie.. seemed to value and stand in opposition to. Gone is the Louisiana bayou ambience only to be replaced by pretentiously unpretentious tasteful distinction and total conformity. And of course historically accurate colors! It's now very "Turkey Hill Farm"...I expect Nate Berkus to step out any minute in Ralph Lauren and give us a tour.
this happens on my beach all the time-people get classic old cottages that were done in blues and grays--- say what you want about the stone wall garden the original house was NOT yellow)--and repaint them the most garishly bright "BEACHY" colours, when the actual beach is full of muted tones. i'm so happy this couple lovingly restored this landmark but yeah i could do w/o the yellow. oh well. the house still stands. win-win.
Yes, I actually had my photograph taken in the driveway and on the front porch but there was nobody at home or I would have introduced myself and my friend who took my pictures but he was a little shy and wanted to get away and I said why we're not doing anything wrong or anything and we didn't see any cats anywere...!
this is so sad to me, but i guess it was inevitable that the house would either have to be restored or demolished. =( It doesn't feel like Grey Gardens anymore.
Although this house is a place most of us would love to live in, I agree that it is not a sympathetic restoration (to match the story of the house) ... They should have restored the porch etc. to how it was originally and the paint colour just feels wrong.
Why would they fix it up? That old house, the falling apart one, is an american icon in itself. Why would they paint it? Both Edie's loved thier house the way it was! Why do they modernize things?
The house is actually on the same road as Martha Stewarts house I read somewhere. The people who own it rent it out 11 months out of the year but it has been totally restored. I think Jessica Lange said she stayed there. Very wealthy section of the Hamptons.
Yeah Wiki told me its been demolished. I should hope not! They should heritage list it. More than just being an old house, but THE house in which the beales lived.
Ben Bradlee and Sally Quinn did buy and restore Grey Gardens and it was featured in Architectural Digest a few years ago. It's now stunning and I'm so happy those two appreciated its significance and didn't just level the place.
I would love to see more of this house called Grey Gardens. Know where I can find more on the house today? I've seen both documentaries about the Beales. I knew the house was restored but had never seen it until this video. Bravo
Reading some of these posts, I'm relieved to know some people recognize a travesty when they see one.

@MPL029....Yes, and no regard for history or the love Edie had for this place. A bored, rich country club wife w a Martha Stewart fetish!

It looks great. So glad it was not torn down. I am sure the previous occupants would be thrilled.

this is an outrage... very disappointing. It's not the Beales' any more... it's just a house. Please change the name so I can get over it.

It was named for the Grey (walled) Garden, not the Grey house.

They should have let it stay the way it was and let fans pay to come in and visit it. They've ruined the spirit of the house

it was restored. little Edie would only sell the house to someone under the condition that the house never be demolished only restored.
