  • yes being on the downside of 50 i know just how lucky i was to be in houston texas in 1974 and witness history that totally changed country music , .my first time to hear willie was at shepherd's drive in houston halloween nite 1974 for red headed stranger debut concert ray wylie, david allan coe, were playing the opera house, it was an amazing time ! thanks for the video i am a huge fan of hayes carll so it extra nice!

  • There should be a Sesame Street/Muppet character based on RWH.

  • Even though he co-wrote the song with Haynes Carll, I like RWH version better. I think his voice and style match up better with the lyrics. Regardless, two great songs by two great artists.

  • This tune sticks in my head for days after I hear it. When it finally fades away, I come back to start it all over again...

  • i cant believe hes me cousin

  • such an amazing song, and very well sung! hayes carll's version is equally good in my opinion.

-She told me not to worry bout' judgement day. She says dying to get into heaven just ain't our way.-

  • One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Why isn't this guy bigger than he is?

  • damn i love this song !~ where can i buy it?

  • @earthmuzic1

This is on Hubbard's recent album, which has an odd title: A. Enlightenment B: Endarkenment. You can probably find it at a local record store or ask them to order one... or you could download from an online store. He wrote it with Hayes Carll, who also recorded it. I like this better, but both are great.

  • @earthmuzic1 Hayes Carll does a cover of it and it's fantastic. You can buy it on iTunes

  • @kaitlinjade2 That's not a cover. Hayes Carll co-wrote the song.

  • ive listened to his like 100 times in a row

  • amazing

  • don't feel bad, i just found this, 47 yrs old

  • Great song!! simply fantastic writing!

  • no dislikes...i like it.

  • He does a live radio show on KNBT fm in New Braunfels, TX most Tuesday nights from a bar (Tavern on the Gruene) where he interviews Texas/Red Dirt artists. They usually perform some of their songs and sometimes he'll play a song himself. Very entertaining guy!

  • You wanna hear this kinda stuff on the radio? Go to KPIG, 107.5 FM in Freedom California. You can also get an online stream from them. Great indy radio station.

  • @nickalaga if you have Sirius/XM satellite radio, the Outlaw Country channel plays all this kind of music too

  • Caryll Hayes is the songwriter, his version is very good also, check him out

  • @rghunnicutt Co-writer with RWH. Also, its Hayes Caryll.

  • @rghunnicutt Hayes Carrl not Cary hayes....just sayin

  • @seattlegal he co-wrote this with Hayes

  • lol found this song being high at gambelled's place :D and im 25

  • Wow Hayes Carll has to be very proud to have RWH covering one of his songs!. Awesome

  • i love this song only heard it 2 weeks ago thanks to my mothers love of country/folk music and leaving radio 2 on while i was sittin at the comp

  • Love this song. I've never heard of this guy until seeing him on Jimmy Fallon.

  • "I'll never pay off my student loan / smellin' like Shiners and cheap cologne" - Ray Wylie Hubbard

  • @robbbo40 shiner and cheap cologne hes refering to shiner bock a beer brewed and served in texas you should try some its awsome. just sayin

  • Saw Ray Wylie at The Luminaire in London last night. Great gig. Got to have a chat with him pre-gig as well - what a gentleman. To answer someones previous question, Drunken Poets Dream was written by Hayes Carll & Ray Wylie Hubbard, tho' Hayes recorded it first. Thanks for the gig Ray - See you next time.

  • I thought the same thing as you jdraper80, but anywho this dude is cooler than the other side of the pillow, jam on picker

  • accidently saw this guy live in asheville...just magical...had heard 'redneck mother' before, but didn't know him by name..just staggered into a bar to find this treasure...run forever, ray!

  • @normanplombe as you know, Ray Wylie Hubbard wrote the song Jerry Jeff Walker made famous, "Up Against the Wall Redneck Mother."

here's where it comes from. the anarchist stuff is cool, but the section "Influence as a slogan" shows the etymology of the phrase.

    wikipedia Up_Against_the_Wall_Motherfuckers

  • this is a hayes carll cover right?

  • @skanky87 they co-wrote it

  • Instant Classic Ray, Greetings from your friends in West Texas!!! Hope yall enjoy the UK !!

  • An update: RWH is nominated for the 2010 Americana Music Association awards for Artist of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year.

Jdraper80 - better late than never, buddy!

    And, poopbreath5 - RWH is THE badass. ... :-)

  • I'm pissed that I';m 30 and just now discovered the greatest thing next to Willie Nelson.

  • @jdraper80 well, you ain't dead yet....

  • @jdraper80 You're pissed, Mr. Bloody 30 . Ha! imagine how I feel at 60 you young whelp! Not only that, I'm English , try writing something that rhymes with "petrol".

  • @longjonwhite i think ass*ole rhymes...

  • @longjonwhite

don't have petrol for my machine...... only in america is it gasoline................

  • @ibhounded Ha ha ! Nice try, but no cigar Mate. OK, you put "petrol" in a line, but you didn't rhyme it with anything did you ? It's one of those words with no worthwhile rhyme, like "orange".

Some other wag here suggested "asshole"... or maybe he means I'm one...

Maybe he's right. Still diggin RWH though !

  • i love this song.

  • Ray Wylie is a badass!!

  • Love it. Very cool . I'm a gonna git me some mescaline!

  • Words can't describe the way that song makes me feel.

  • damn! the guy sings and looks just like the way i feel. good man!!1

  • If you like this you need ... yes, NEED ... to hear and own RWH's new album "A. Enlightenment B. Endarkenment (Hint: There is no C.)."

"Drunken Poet's Dream" is on the album.

As I've posted in other places: mark my words - at year's end, Enlightenment/Endarkenment will be on numerous "best of the year" lists. Yes, it's THAT good.

  • @murphyssaloon

It will make my best list

  • @murphyssaloon I gotta agree with Murph....I got the whole cd...whoop& holler and pots & pans...classic RWH...and Lucas is sounding way beyond his years too..

  • Love RWH!

  • just AWESOME....and he seems to be singing about me!

  • Very cool artist, met him in Steamboat Springs. His son is a blazing guitarist, as well.

  • helll yes

  • Can't beat him....Heart and soul in that one......

  • love it

  • I think this is really a Hayes Carl written song, I know he's got it on his latest album. He and Ray Wylie collaborate a lot and play together so could be a collaborative effort as well.
