You've goto run and jump for that huge jump. The control for running is under options , controls. The control will appear under run or run/fire.

yea the hole was tough :| until.... i figured out to run in the game !!! thats why hes moving so fast. to jump the lava hole all u need to do is go to the options and choose any key to run ( its the last one ) then like caped mario said.. just run fast and jump . hope you all can do it now :P

On the 3rd part of world 1, there appears to be a portal at the very top of the screen after you get the power up thing. But I can never access it, I always get stuck in the clouds, and then I have to fall back down on either side of the thing. Is this a secret area, and if so how does one access it?

did you know about the 1-up plaque? at the first world first level, go like 3 cm to the left and press down. u r taken to the end of the course but if u travel back to ur start point, all these 1-up mushrooms are everywhere :
