The only separation is keeping the state out of the church. The Federalist Papers make this clear. This is why the first settlers came here in the first plac, to get away form the the Church of England. BTW, Thomas Jefferson was referring to a specific Christian denomination, not religion in general.
mr. dys is actually wrong. One of our founding fathers, James Madison, contemplated that the Constitution protects rights of the minority from the tyranny of the majority. Under the Constitution, there is separation of church and state. The was designed, by Madison et al to avoid the setting of laws based upon religious factors. Our founding fathers understood that such a scenario would result when majority is able to take away the rights of a minority.
