  • i know what i want for christmas!

  • how do you crank the signal power? wrt160n

  • @JasonfromMinnesota Once you have DD-WRT installed, go to Wireless>Advance Settings. You will see a option that says TX Power. Higher that number until you get the range you want. I wouldn't go higher then 95.

  • That's awesome, I need to do that for the E3000 model

  • I have a problem with mine, can you help me to solve it please? :s

  • My router just went out last night. I have had it for 4 years.

  • stick your finger in it

  • So, did you crank the signal power all the way up?

  • @parahumanoid Yes, but only for a few minutes. I was told running the router at full transmit power would burn it out. No matter how many fans were installed.

  • @tonearaujo my mom want one ware can we buy a pre mod wrt rooter with usb she want to block ip from xbox live thear or a few bad apple trying ddos or network and my isp will not give us a new ip

so we will be stuck with the same ip for ever

  • @couldkill420 You can buy a pre modded WRT router from ebay. Or you can buy a compatible router and load the firmware yourself.

As far as your question about xbox live, im a little confused about what you are trying to do. What is it your trying to accomplish?

  • @couldkill420 you can change your IP in CMD if you are running windows

Computer connected directly to the modem

Connect ur pc directly to your modem using CAT5 and config your network for DHCP in ur PC Get to a command prompt. (START, run, cmd). Type "ipconfig /release" (without the quotes). Shut down computer. Turn off computer. Turn off all ethernet hubs/switches. Turn off cable/DSL modem. Leave off overnight. Turn everything back on.

  • @stwebs no i cant it a office line isp do not alow ip change

  • @tonearaujo

this is VERY true i have Bricked "6" routers in total trying to run them at full TX Power with various Heat dissipation options "including water cooled"and my final conclusion is that the hardware simply cannot take warp 9.5 for that long XD

  • cool project

  • pretty c00l project... )

  • all the people saying this is overboard. My belkin piece of shit needs a fucking desk fan sitting next to it, otherwise it drops the connection. So no, this is not overboard or stupid. Routers do heat up, and dont work properly when they overheat (or at all, in the case of my belkin) So having a fan on them is correcting the dumbass mistake router manufacturers made in the first place. Inadequate cooling.

    Great mod man.

  • great!!

  • It sounds like my VCR rewinding a tape. Nice mod, though.

  • Sounds like a Cisco router to me! I would definitely consider this if you are gonna be running a "Full Gallon" 250 mW !

  • I would only find this necessary if you put custom f/w to boost the signal strength and you don't want to cook your router. Because with out fans, you have a small 12volt oven. lol

  • so it gets hot?

(a comment from a none hater for once)

  • Don't let these haters hate. I dig it.

  • i think the fans are great seeing that if u bump up the antenna power the thing gets fuckin hottt asss

  • Couldnt you use a larger fan with a slower speed to cut down on the noise. Other than that think its a good idea.

  • This is an awesome project dude. Eff all the haters. Funny thing is that the newer linksys routers could use a fan like this because they overheat all the time. This just shows that were ahead of the game.

  • looks amazing bro, just ignore those rude comments, even though this is over board, i have never see a router with a fan in it. this looks so cool!

  • I smell jealous people who can't make a PWM controlled fan or drill some holes Q.Q

  • water cool it and overclock it

  • I like DD-WRT a lot. The overclock thing is cool and somewhat useful if you're playing games, but the REAL reason to use it is that nice radio boost. Going from 70 mw to 251 mw of radio strength makes a HUGE difference in wifi range.

  • @iggy151 I was just having issues with my lyn54gs so I got online...who knew ppl were paving the way so I could hook it up! I love it, just need to see a video so I don't "brick" it.

  • Sometimes, this shit needs it though. I had a motorola modem. The case was getting realllllllly damn hot. So, i pulled it out, put my finger on the main chip, it was hot enough to where i couldnt hold my finger on it. It needed a heatsink. Unfortunately, i never did anything about it and it died. :(. It was the fastest modem ive ever owned.

  • thats nice.. i've noticed my wrt get somewhat hot without any modded firmware.. about to go thru the dd-wrt mod... it seems good to keep the device cool to keep from overheating the board..

  • Can't believe people think this is overboard; water cooling is overboard.

  • haha very nice, Im thinking of doing it too.... but not that much lol

  • sounds like an airplane taking off

  • Screw the others.. this is awesome. =D

  • @ribstogo12 : agreed!!

  • a wlan router is meant to share internet bot making horrible sounds. thats just stupid

  • @PiirmaNils It's an over-clocked router flashed with better firmware which they get freaking hot when you hack them but the noise is a small price too pay for performance in case you don't get it the speed switch was added for noise reduction.

  • @PiirmaNils I know that those fans are overkill for the router. That was the idea behind the project. To go completely overboard with it.

  • wow how do the idiots even find this video. If you don't know what dd-wrt is atleast google it before saying that the mod is stupid. So are you using the N router in a WDS setup or just as a bridge?

  • @bck9900 Im currently using it as a Access Point. I used it bridge my network for about two years. My current network setup no longer needs to be bridged.

  • Neardood 1 you fucking idiot, he used modded firmware and upgraded the routers range and speed, therefore creating heat. You've got to expel that extra heat.

  • @neardood1 This mod does not make your internet faster. Only makes your local traffic faster. I had the transmit power at max strength. This is why i went overboard with the fans. The router is kept in a room where i dont have to see or hear it. Its really not a issue for me.

  • An over-clocked router needs cooling, but I just set an old, quiet, videocard fan on top of my wrt54g-tm and it works fine.

  • Waist of time WTF IT doesnt even need a fan

    /facepalm

  • with DD-wrt this 50 dollar router and these 10-15 dollar mods turn it into a 600 dollar server router...

  • Dude thats pretty awesome!

  • ...not to mention a toggle, pot and fans.

  • @nolobede THANKS!

  • @tonearaujo He, he... I do LOTS of projects that are a waste of time. It was a compliment. Still not really needed except to have a toggle to switch and a pot to twist. Other than that, meh.

  • @nolobede no it's not, those routers can be overclocked, which means it can heat up a lot more, so it needs cooling

  • @proximxr

And if you are "overclocking" this router... you seriously need to find something better to do with your "geekness." Serioulsy if you think you need to do that (and its highly unlikely).... you really need to rethink your design and network. You need OTHER equipment... not a fan on this thing.

  • @nolobede Overclocking = higher performance...also means FASTER.

  • @proximxr

Overclocking?... Nope, if you're using that thing at home, you aren't putting through enough load to make a difference, unless you've added another 10 ports... and ugh, never mind why bother. You will not gain performance. It's a waste of time period... just something to do to look at it and say "ohhhhh, look what I did." Want better performance, get a better router 54g is so "olden days."

  • @nolobede That's what I am meaning, is when running something else through it, like a switch, then a computer on every port on the switch, it makes more data have to pass through the router, which will make it heat up...but yes in this case it seems to be a "Look what I did", because fans aren't really needed, just additional heatsinks/bigger ones.

  • @proximxr

No, router is still limited whether you have 100 or 5 users on a switch. You will still only get 100 max throughput. And the switch will only handle max of router or itself, whichever is less.

  • @nolobede A fan (or two) can still help though...but then again it can "hurt" the router, by causing dust pileup, which insulates heat, which can lead to more severe things...like fires.

  • @proximxr

Not to mention the power source draw

  • @nolobede your comment was mean and hurt his feelings

  • @nolobede Then why you clicked this video ? It's your fault.

  • @epique9

Yeah right, like you've never ended up somewhere unexpected while surfin youtube.

  • is there anyone who can stand this noise ?

is there anyone who all day gonna play with those switches ?

  • Nice! looks like fun.

  • I think your router is cool enough now

  • AWESOME!

  • It's louder than a 360!

  • Que gambiarra mais mal feita xD

  • lol sound like he ha a jet in his room

  • that sucks, too loud even on lowest fan speed

  • I thought the title was linksys takeoff but...

  • so your router overheats??

  • Would like to know where can I find the dimmer switch so I can adjust and minimize the loudness of the fan on my router.

  • its a potentiometer, basically a variable resistor to change the speed of the fan, not just the loudness

  • I have put a heatsink, a mini fan over the heatsink, and a 40mm fan for the whole housing on a WRT54G v8. The fan un-noticeable, completely flushed mount, but the only down side is that is loud. I am extremely happy with it as I have overclocked it to Tx Power 160mw. I am pretty sure and positive that I can push it to the max now as 160mw it still stay cool and kinda cold when I touch the housing. Will post a video maybe tomorrow.

  • Ya know, if I was willing to have a router that loud running all the time, I'd use my WatchGuard X700. I've yet to see a reason to over-clock a WRT54G-TM on a DSL connection. I'll keep mine running cool and silent.

  • where did you get that dimmer???

  • can the thing fly?

  • heh very nice. Much neater than my attempt. I glued the fan on and soldered its wires onto the PCB's 12V. Is much more reliable now though, so I would recommend this mod to people who hammer their routers with constant downloading etc. Should stop connection drop-outs etc.

  • its cool but not needed!

  • i want one!!

  • is this a jet??

  • Correction Mbps*, and 54Mbps is a measurement of how much data you can transfer per second. Going on the internet WON'T even come close to this no matter what you do. Its basically for file sharing, such as transferring one file from this computer to that computer via the router, then the faster the Mbps the router is, the faster that file is going to transfer. 54Mbps is a 802.11g router, and there's also faster ones 802.11n, but if all your doing is surfing the internet, 54 is more then enough

  • yeah why not lol. 54mps is basically for file sharing, browsing the internet won't come close.

  • ^_^ Nice

  • the questions il give the anwser a shot, its called innovation the next best thing or a trend to something new, but in most cases its for the minds of inspired inventors, great work tone

  • does dd-wrt increase the speed (mbps) of the 54g? I have a Ps3 & looking for some performance. thanks

  • If I'm not mistaken 54g is 54g. I'm guessing the reason for the fan is with DD-WRT you can effectively increase the range of the router by increasing the power output (mw) which will make the router run hot at higher outputs. Stock/default output is 28mw. With DD-WRT you can go as high as 251mw. DDWRT only recommends an increase up to 70mw safely.

  • Up to 100mw they say it to be safe.

  • 600selv12,

no point having a connection faster than 54 for the ps3. it dosnt have much ram so the rest will be a waste.

i have a ps3 myself. runs just as slow 54mbps as it does 100mbps.

  • @EdgeyForSure

Actually it does matter, if you are playing on a LAN but otherwise it would be a waste.

  • can you make a vid on how you put them on there?

  • sounds like a dang turbo on a truck lol

  • nice!

  • Nice but those fans are crazy loud

  • I don't understand why u did this... :s. explain please

  • Hey Post a new Video already

  • good god

  • Hey tonearaujo, it seems you have done a very nice job overclocking that nice Linksys router. I have the same model and I wondered if you could please do a short tutorial of "How to install a fan", or could you in any way just tell me where to solder the fan power leads. Thanks in advance.

  • Sure thats not a problem. Im also working on a few other projects. Once im done ill post how the mods were done.

Im not using this router anymore. Im currently using a Linksys N router that ive managed to get DD-WRT working on it.

  • Nice mod. Are you overclocking it using DD-WRT? I don't see a reason to add a heasink and fan to these routers otherwise. Mine doesn't get that hot and it's on 24-7.

  • atomic batteries to power turbine to speed
