Well recommended. Sheen plays the part perfectly as always and the cinematography is excellent. It is a road movie essentially and relies on images with no dialogue for large sections which gives one the ooportunity to absorb the peace, introspection and isolation of the main character. Kate Rusby's music features regularly which adds to the effect. Filmed in Sheffield and Derbyshire - my (and Kate Rusby's) stomping ground.
@kts68 Thank you very much for the recommendation. This film seems most intriguing and it looks like I shall be able to acquire it from Amazon.com. As for Kate Rusby, what an extraordinary talent. I regret that I discovered her only last month. I'll be in the UK in just a couple of weeks, but not in time to catch her set at the Cambridge folk festival. Oh well, I'll pick up some of her CDs when I'm in London. Perhaps she'll tour the US some day. Love her northern accent! Cordially, EP.
You will love it I'm sure. This scene is set at a pub called The Striines in Derbyshire near Sheffield
I know that she regularly plays folk festivals in Canada. See her website. Also check out her Christmas CD. It contains well known carols sung to unusual tunes. (Well, unusual for those outside of Sheffield) They are old (like 500 years) rendiitons sung only in North Sheffield pubs.
More info available at a website called yorkshire-folk-arts
@kts68 Thank you for the additional information. I'll definitely check out Kate's seasonal album and keep an eye on her web site. There is a semi-annual folk festival in our part of the US that does draw some international talent. I'll put her name before the organizers -- Who knows? Maybe she could be lured south on her next trip to North America. She is a remarkable talent. Her band is excellent, too.
thoroughly recommend this wonderful film, not only Michael Sheen and Ruth Jones, you get a brilliant soundtrack with Kate Rusby too! what more could you want, it's lovely!
A great film. Someone lent it me just 'cause I like honda cubs, but it turned out to be the best film I'd seen in a while. The cinematography of the Pennines is brilliant.
Haven't seen the movie yet, but am intrigued. Kate Rusby is wonderful. Love "The Fairest of All Yarrow."
