HP have been bed partners with Microsoft for years i don think its going to end soon! There's big money at stake... HP dislikes linux just as much as Microsoft dose. I wouldn't be holding your breath for a Linux Factory Laptop from HP Anytime soon .Nice thought thow!
... Wow, you really should read up on things. You know HP has their own version of UNIX? And that they sell really really expensive servers that run it?
@GodofGrunts Even though Dell offers computers with Ubuntu, it's crippled and loaded with Dell bloatware just as they do with Windows on their systems
Unless you OWN and USE vista, especially (on a netbook) you can't complain. I, however, OWN and USE Vista on my ASUS Eee-PC 900 and it runs great. It doesn't crash, it doesn't slow down, and it's compatible with all the programs and devices i own. and it's a given that any OS should run slow on the ASUS Eee-PC 900 because the SSD on it has very slow Read/Write speeds. but suprisingly it runs faster than XP and windows 7 RC. I ask one thing from all of you: Don't be a follower. + I Love Linux!
They recommend Vista because Microsoft tells them to do so. Besides, if you want Vista to run on that, you must buy more hardware, thus more money to their pockets. Come on, HP, admit it. Vista sucks.
I never used Vista, but since I've heard a LOT of complaints, not just yours, I just won't. Ever.
If you really like all those graphical effects, Linux is still the best choise. All those effects would run like 10 times faster, and I think even more.
YOU ARE SO DAMN RIGHT!! Those Vendors still sleeping. They think the homeuser is making big desicions and the big deals.. its not.. we admins test and decide whats in and whats out. HP and ANY OTHER VENDOR - DO INVENT!!! DO SUPPORT LINUX AND THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF USERS WILL BUG YOUR STUFF IF WE KNOW THAT YOU REALY SUPPORT LINUX WITHOUT CRIPPLE AND STUFF!! THIS IS A HUGHE MARKET! But they just dont see it... SAD!!! Thats why the economy are in bad shape....they are so blind! so doumb
no, you can use up to 3.2 something gigs of ram in any 32 bit OS, its only if you want more than 3 gigs of ram that you must go to a 64bit OS I personally have 64 bit ubuntu and a virtual machine of 64bit windows 7 RC......running 6 gig of DDR3
That's not true. I own 2 PCs with Windows XP *grumblegrumble* and one of them has 2 gigs of ram. The point is 1 gig is actually enough to get XP running ok, and more just won't do the trick. To get a pc do stuff faster, it's better to get a 64 bit processor.
Besides, software shouldn't limitate your hardware. Hardware itself is rather more restrictive. If you have an old motherboard, it is likely you won't be able to add to much ram.
Over all I agree with you Sean; however, I don't require drivers to be open source. Open Source would be preferred yes, but as long as they are professionally and purposefully developed, and kept updated, then, I'm fine with them simply being provided closed source.
I agree, I use proprietary nVidia drivers because I just don't care about that because I know that nVidia is making pretty good software, but the OS itself should be open.
Hardware vendors probably just recommend Vista... Sorry, but I just realised that one thing I like about Ubuntu is that it prompts you to shut down or not when you hit the power button. Very useful for when your cat walks across your laptop... anyway, it's probably because they're to lazy to further develop for compatibility w/ other operating systems. That, and the money.
I unpacked one of these at work. Really nice build quality, reminded me of a tiny MacBook Pro! But it had Vista on it... I swear, first boot up took forever! Probably 45mins - 1 hour, and after all the wait all i got was a sluggish Vista machine with loads of bloatware on it.. My MacBook Pro took like 5 minutes to be ready for use after the first time i powered it up... Would love to see Linux on these HPs instead!
In fact, the power of Open Source software is so great, it is extremely hard to use the Internet without accessing a FreeBSD or a Linux system. Heck, Google uses Ubuntu Linux on all of their servers! Michael Dell, the CEO of Dell Computers has Ubuntu Hardy on his PC! Plus, it would save schools so much money if they would switch over to Linux. 300 dollars for your operating system? Please. And that's without Microsoft Office.
but the reason people get a vista or even use Microsoft is because its able to find things for all your computer needs. its program data base is huge and when people have demand and only one group is able to supply it......... you get my point .
im not dissing Linux because i thinking its great but there is a reason why i wont join Linux. because when ever i have a crazy idea for a program or when ever i want my comp to do something cool Microsoft can fulfill my needs
How could Vista possibly run on something like that? Vista is a large OS that requires tons of RAM and a good processor to get any kind of decent performance out of, and even then it's not that great.
XP is excellent if you want to run Windows, but nothing will ever beat the speed and stability of Linux. And there's actually a version of Ubuntu specifically meant for schools, Edubuntu. I'm highly tempted to contact my school's computer technician and ask her to install Linux on the computers.

you why they almost force vista? because they make no extra money off having linux. since linux is free HP makes no extra money from it DUH! therefore you might as well not even try with these videos. because companies are only after money they dont give a fuck about the user.
You are right, so why should they sell it with software that some other company sells and charges for? It will make their computer more expencive, and expencive computers don't sell as much.
In computers like this, even MS Windows XP makes up to one third of the total price to customers. Remove that cost, and you have a real competitor to take market shares from Asus here. Put MS Windows XP in and may go for less expecive Asus with Linux on it (and the install MS Windows XP on it, go figure).
I don't. I want to by a computer/laptop with Linux (any Linux will do), so I know that it got support in Linux. Then I can install whatever distribution I like, or stay with the own installed.
I will NOT go through this shit with a new computer with buggy MS BIOS and Broadcom (and nVidia) hardware again.
Not only is there a healthy market share for Linux but HP would be foolish not to look into isntalling linux on some of their computers. Its free OS that will create a greater profit margin for them and at the same time lower the cost of the computer for the consumer.
Best damn video I've seen in ages! I could not have said anything better that you did!
And really, the same goes for Dell, Dell decided to sell their computers with Ubuntu (And Vista, of course...) but instead of really promoting it, I go to their website and I find this on the top of the page "Dell recommends Windows Vista Business" and I don't know, it's just hurts me to watch, both HP and Dell have so much potensial now, but then they allow Windows to buy them out, it just doesn't seem right.
EVERY Manufacturer is recommending Vista, even in Germany. I don't know why, but it smells like they have to do it because of a license agreement or so.
That's a lot of lives, that's gonna be threatened. Because Linux is not like Windows where there a about 100-200 developers. Linux haves thousands of thounds of developers - I'd almost say millions - all over the world doing it by own free will. It's gonne take some time to threat all them.
A while ago, HP stopped distributing Netscape because Microsoft said so. Also, if it goes to the Linux side, it won't get any more MS money. And that's a no-no.
this is not only for HP for all vendors who recomeds windows and not selling laptops with Linux Os or with out Os. even it is hard to find a laptop model with Linux or with out os.
I can't promise, but it is a possibility. What is the best format, if you don't mind me asking? Just a transcript, or some sort of download with the video and separate subtitle file?
Great video Shawn, hopefully they get the idea. Perhaps you can do a posting on the Linux Terminal Server project you install at the school. Or as geeky guys love games, perhaps you can review or demo Open Arena or GL-117. And just for the eye candy appeal, Beryl (that ought to get all the geek molecules vibrating nicely).
HP, it is not a matter of if, but when - you will have to deal with Linux sooner or later. Linux is making inroads everywhere. Ask your customers if you don't believe me and give them what they want. Soon enough you'll have a lot more customers, because, hey, every customer likes to buy from a company that gives them what they want.
AWESOME VIDEO! CONGRATS! As far as HP goes, they could learn more from DELL ( they offer desktops and laptops with UBUNTU pre-installed). Congrats on the video again , grait arguments! Keep them coming!
loosing control? they're manipulated by the 'man' - namely balmer - that obese pig-sweating belligerent fool. Very pompous he is, with his ignorant views, and talking down of anything non-microsoft.
A lot of vendors are in bed with him. And he gets jealous when they 'sleep around'. There's a 'microsoft tax' on most hardware sold. You can't even buy a laptop from a lot of vendors without a microshaft product preinstalled.
I agree, Vista is awful. How could Microsoft release such garbage after XP(which is actually not that bad). Linux is best though and Open Source is awesome.
