you should try worldedit for ingame editing, you cant make floating sand though. but is is very usefull and easier to use.

It is a program ran out outside of minecraft - If you have access to the save files of the server you can use it on the server save files.

Also there is a plugin similar that works on bukkit servers (though I'm not sure if the floaty stuff trick works with it) called WorldEdit plugin that can do everything that MCEdit can but it will cause your server to crash if you do too much at once (don't worry the server won't get corrupted when it crashes it will just stop the server)

@TheSgtroach12 The multiplayer equvialnt of this is a mod called worldedit, but you could just edit a savefile from single player, drag it to your server and rename the file " world".
