  • Cracked? Bitch please Reddit sent me.

  • Voting down 9gag, voting up Cracked

  • LCL IS REAL

  • I remember watching this scene when I was a kid. Stuck into my brain for life.

  • Glad they cut it cos if they'd left it in it could have upset me or caused me to do imbalanced acts!!!

Friggin censorship in 2012 at nearly midnight!!!!

  • @ninepin75 IIRC, it was only cut from the version released in the UK. The US version had it.

  • Odd that in previous viewings of this films on UK television, the scene was shown uncut (with the rat 'drowning').

Has the scene been further cut by channel 4?

  • @jackvaughn24 Why would they cut this scene? It's foreshadowing the ending...

  • They cut this on channel 4 :/

  • @Ashers132 This was cut from all British versions of this movie from the cinema release onwards. The BBFC chopped it at the request of the veterinary association.

  • @simeoneous Must have been on some versions as I knew they had cut it?

  • cracked brought me here.

  • fucking 9 gaggers...

  • It's called perfluorohexane. By the name you can tell it's made of 9 carbons that are single bonded, along with some fluorine or fluoride.

  • @DigitalTusk i meant 6 carbons :/

  • Damn.....as a kid i always wondered and hoped this biotech was a real thing. i had no idea it WAS.

  • It would suck to be that rat, hopefully they only did this scene once. God forbid one of the actors fuck up one of their lines during the scene and they'd have to refilm it again.

  • @Sanriko To be fair, while scary the rat was clearly totally fine.

  • funny junk

  • lmao "look its breathing it" more like losing its fucking shit!!!

  • Cracked

  • Thumbs up if cracked brought you here.

  • Fucking 9gag. The annoying 13 year old girls of the internet.

  • Im here because of cracked

  • Cracked educating the masses since 1958

  • Also, Cracked.....

  • 9gag showed this too? I came from Cracked.

  • I just learned that this scene is not special effects... that fluid is oxygenated and the rat is a real rat! OMG... thats freaky

  • @gsajenn1 did you just come from that cracked article too? lol

  • Funny thing is, those 2 scenes are the only thing I can recall about this film

  • Cracked!

  • ..and then a few hours later, the rat jumps into a tub of regular water, remembers what happened last time and breathes in, but drowns.

  • Shouldn't pick rats up by their tails. They're not meant to bear the weight of the whole animal and you can cause serious injuries that way.

  • Smoke CRACKED err'day

  • in on the cracked train

  • so cracked says this was actual and not special effects

  • @luxlucisvia yeah, cuz it wasnt special effects

  • CRACKED!!!

  • fuck 9gag 4chan represent

  • HaHoo!! HAHOO!

  • 9gag, teaches me cool shit. College, makes me want to kill myself.

  • now back to 9gag

  • well why not, your lungs just need oxygen

but i can imagine it is uncomfortable as fuck having lots of liquid goig into your lungs

  • The best actress was the rat =)

  • Don't use 9gag Army for unuseful Crap, i mean you are just ruining the Status of the 9GAG Army, so everyone says "they're just joking around" Stop it, srsly!

  • 9GAG brought me here

  • @karlybeefy HOO! HOO! HOO! HOO! HOO

  • @karlybeefy FAP

  • @karlybeefy HA-OOH! HA-OOH! HA-OOH!

  • @karlybeefy Meh...Cracked.com users will pawn them.

  • FUCK me there actually is something called liquid breathing.

  • so since i know there is no such thing as breathable liquid, i assume the rat just died...

  • @obstfredi That was a real scene, you know that right? It was banned in the UK

  • I chose 9gag over sleep and I found myself here.

  • 9gag (:

  • m8 you will get lots of viewes because of 9gag ^^

  • 9GAG

  • @Jonisfilm HERE WE ARE. HA-OOH

  • @Jonisfilm Yes, yes they are

  • @Jonisfilm 9gag brought me here

  • @Jonisfilm

    jep, i'm here;p

  • @Jonisfilm Damn you. I googled 9gag. Now I am one of you......

  • @MrRazorblade999 US military has experimented with this since 1966 and yup it works... Look into it yourself

  • So cool

  • @WhotouchedSash No Shit

  • little known fact: This scene used no special effects. the fluid actually exists and is safe to breathe.

  • @WhoTouchedSasha I know....whats his name...the mindfreak guy, criss angel, he used it in a stunt to ''hold his breath'' underwater for 16 minutes

  • Just for some perspective, what do you think a fish feels when it is pulled out of the water? Ever seen shows or movies where a huge net dumps hundreds of flopping fish onto a ship? And those fish are actually drowning, unlike these rats which apparently all lived according to Cameron (though, to be fair, he would probably say that no matter what really happened). We dump live lobster into boiling water. Hell, many animals would die crueler deaths at the hands of nature itself. some perspective

  • @jerryvalez - Fish do not know they are drowning. They flop because thats how that swim. They have to idea there out of the water.

  • It is an awful movie. Childish science fiction crap.

  • @MrRazorblade999

perfluorocarbons are a type of molecule that is capable of bonding oxygen and CO2. The rat you see in this scene is actually "breathing" perfluorocarbon.

  • Looks like an awful movie

  • @passiveMenis you're an awful movie!

  • @Devilbat74

    I've been caught

  • @passiveMenis lol

  • one of the best scenes from a brilliant film

  • "Can I borrow your rat?"

  • reddit has a ridiculous amount of worms and virus' after spending about 10 minutes there I had to reinstall windows it was so bad.

  • @jdoe9898 So true. I went to Reddit once and now stings when I pee.

  • wow, that's trippy

  • Ну что сказать? Эко-цензоры - вот настоящие скоты и крысы. Заколебали со своим гумманизмом портить хорошую фантастику. Верните эпизод в фильм!

  • fyi this is real stuff /wiki/Perfluorohexane

  • Last time I went on Reddit my virus scanner was going off like a Christmas tree.

  • @ericbordax Reddit doesnt have viruses you idiot

  • I think this video owes a large majority of it's views to Reddit. You Can't explain that.

  • Yeah Reddit ruined my pc, I had to spend $300 for a new BIOS system

  • So that's what The Scout did after his TF2 days

  • That's a shame because it actually kills the rat two hours later. Perharps the rat get on well right after, but it died a few time after because of that experience which really happens. That's shameful...

  • @pink2201

I cannot find any proof of this claim. Can you provide a link?

  • @pink2201 I don't believe you.

  • @pink2201 I agree, depending on what the liquid was exactly the rat must have died a couple of hours later or a few weeks later. Kind of hypocritical for a film with such message "be good to each other and the planet blah blah" to kill 5 rats for the sake of entertainment when they could have simulated it. I liked the film but the fact they killed the rats taints the message and also makes me want to punch James Cameron in the balls.

  • can anyone tell me if that stuff when u breath it in does it taste and feel like water ? Apart from the feeling of suffocation u normally get from water ?

  • @scottweise18

It's called Perflourocarbon. You can look it up on wikipedia

  • That stuff looks like it will burn your nose everytime you breathe it

  • I'm sorry they cut this scene - it made the whole fluid breathing thing far more believable.

They did a real hatchet job on this scene in the special edition resulting in very poor visual and sound quality.

  • Comment removed

  • It's a shame they cut this out of the UK release. I've got "The Abyss Special Edition" on DVD and this entire scene is edited in a way so you don't ever see the rat submerged in the tank. Apparently the Royal Vetinarian said the rat was under stress and pain and so it was an animal rights violation to keep the scene in the movie. It's so annoying, doesn't ruin the movie but its such a fascinating scene and knowing that it was done for real makes it even more amazing. DAMN CENSORSHIP!

  • Test on a human didnt go as well, we closed off one lung incase off lung failure. subject lived but sufferd suvire pneumoia to one lung.diffacty brerathing do to thikness of fuid.

  • normal adjustment period? IE, panic, anxiety, and suffering. Call things for what they are.

  • @vidfreak56 so what? the rat was BREATHING liquid anyways. Look. IT IS A RAT!. Who cares!?

  • @nbensa Who cares? I do for one. Oh and so do you if u understand what you're saying. I was simply stating that the "normal adjustment period" was panic, anxiety, and suffering. Science tries to give euphemize what it does by trying to apply less harsh terms. And a rat, while not as sentient as we are, is probably quite conscious of what is going on. It's a rat...yes. But that doesnt justify anything. Gonna hurt it? At least have the balls to say so.

  • @nbensa The reason it's a rat is because it's brainwave patterns closely match that of our own, thus making it a brilliant and very accurate test subject in substitution of a human. We can breathe this liquid, but we'd have to take in a much larger quantity, meaning it would need much more O in it than a rat would need. And HOORAY WE COULD DIE!! But who fucking cares, right? IT'S A FWUFFY LITTLE BUGGER!!

  • @SacerLegere You're an idiot, what does the supposed similarity of "brainwave patterns" of a rat would matter for testing something that is entirely about lungs and respiratory system? They test it on rats because that's how they do things, first test in small mammals, then in larger mammals...and no, tiny rat lungs and human lungs can't be comparable, that's why this is not suitable for humans, neither it is for rats, all these animals die after a while due to lung tissue damage.

  • @derpestarzt That's bullshit, they don't "die after awhile due to lung tissue damage". The stuff they use is called Fluorinert and as the name suggests is designed to be biologically inert and harmless both when inhaled and ingested.

The reason liquid breathing has never progressed past the experimental stage is because it transfers O2 really well, but sucks at transferring CO2. Thus, you'd feel fine breathing the stuff for the first few minutes, then suddenly drop dead of CO2 poisoning.

  • @derpestarzt Actually, I correct myself. Since the craving to breathe is controlled by CO2 levels, not O2 levels, you'd begin unconsciously hyperventilating in an attempt to blow off the excess CO2, and then you'd eventually panic and feel like you're suffocating even though you have plenty of oxygen, and then you pass out and die.

  • @EntropicMisanthropic seems you don't know what the scheisse you're talking about.

  • This scene makes me so uncomfortable, ugh. They couldn't pay me to do that.

  • If the rat stays too long in PFC it can't survive going back to O2. CO2 poisoning.

    But yeah it's real.

Can't be done with human though. Our lungs can't take it, it's way too hard to breathe liquid. We'd need some kind of pump.

  • living in england i have never seen this scene.....it was cut out for the british audience.......

  • That is why I want a pool full of the stuff xD Act like I drowned ... xD

  • I brought the NSTC theatrical version on laserdisc last month and “the rat scene” was cut from UK theatrical release because the Royal Veterinary thought this would be cruel or harmful for “the rat” Beanie.

  • Rats can stay in the water 3 minute, this rat just stayed in less than one minute

  • That's a miracle in my opinion. I wonder if that will ever replace pool water. Save lives.

  • @incrediblehulkmovies you retarded this would be useless if pool were filled with that water is better dumbass

  • @IloveTishaPersand I think the name calling way uncalled for.

  • @IloveTishaPersand wow ur an asshole

  • @pmxf27 you're adopted

  • @IloveTishaPersand you fucking idiot..stop crying

  • @Taz0161 You are simply wrong about this. All oxygen to the fetus is provided by the mother via the placenta and umbilical cord. The fetal lungs are collapsed until birth and inflate with the first breath the child takes. In fact fetal anatomy is such that blood bypasses the lungs. In no way does any human fetus breathe amniotic fluid the way that rat was breathing oxygenated perflourodecalin. You should be more polite to people especially when you are so completely and embarrassingly ignorant.

  • @bullvalene The oxygen level is maintained by the mother and the fetus receives this O2 thru the umbilical cord. That's true. But I also believe the lungs have to develop before birth and this is done by taking in amniotic fluid. Even when they receive all their O2 thru the umbilical. Think of it like breathing "practice."

  • Comment removed

  • Fail, because rats don't breathe with their mouth. Actually they only breathe with their mouth when they can't breathe with their nose and they're suffocating.

So it's either fake, or the rat is suffocating in there. :|

  • @FrightRat that would be be because the rat thought it was suffocating, when you are about to black out your brain forces you to take a breath, the rat thought it was going to drown

  • @FrightRat is real, maybe the rat like instint thought that he is reallly suffocating, but is real you can search information ( sorry for my english, im learning yet)

  • @FrightRat it takes much more effort to move liquid in and out of its lungs than to move air. that's actually why the stuff hasn't made it into actual human practice, because it would require some sort of active pumping system to keep the lungs from failing under the stress. it also can't be stored in compressed tanks or filtered, so it'd wear out in a couple minutes

the rat wasn't harmed, just freaked out

  • @Kerberoz01 Or years and years of deep breathing 24/7

  • @FrightRat Nope, this is 100% real and that rat is breathing. This scene was NOT a special effect. The rat simply thought he was suffocating, but in reality he was fine (If not freaked out.).

  • Never seen this in full as the scenes where you can see the rat fully submerged are cut from the UK version... :/

  • Great acting!

  • if you believe that creatures with the lungs can breathe liquids, sorry.. it's impossible. lungs is just not right mechanism for that.

  • @Vitaminnn07 It's for real, its a super oxygenated liquid but it's not that popular because it removes all the mucus off your lungs, so you have to stay away from people for a few week, due to your immune system being compromised.

  • @chaostheoryfilms

well maybe it's real for rat.. for some brief time. it's lungs are tiny.

the mucus would be so insignificant problem..

water is 775 times the density of air. humans respiratory system is just not intended for that, it's a 5 liter bag with a tiny neck. and it would have to be not only circulation in-and-out, but also continuous circulation of liquid in the environment, filtration, oxygenation. cause there's a problem called o2, dont forget.

  • that phrase from the film that "we all breath liquid for 9 months" is of course biologically irrelevant and complete nonsense.

  • @Vitaminnn07 Well it's funny you should say that because you and I and everyone else breathed liquid for 9 months in the womb and we did ok.

  • @Taz0161

in the womb we breathed and were fed with the mother's blood through cord (birth cord, or umbilical cord) with which we were connected with mother's blood system. but but we didn't "breath liquid".

  • @Vitaminnn07 You ever hear of something called amniotic fluid ? It's that fluid in the womb that's essential to be breathed into the lungs by the fetus in order for the lungs to develop normally. I suggest you do one of 2 things , either spend more time in class paying attention and less time texting. or if your older crack open your old biology text and look it up.

  • @Taz0161

well, thank you for your respond. i didn't know how ignorant i am

  • I actually get sick watching that. Just imagining the feeling of breathing in liquid. Drowning is the worst way to go

  • the scene was obviously simulated for the movie, but fluid breathing is possible, with the right chemicals.
