@jdorisco yes you are correct. Haven't you heard Peg. Michael McDonald was a top notch session singer and they thrived to work with the best they could get.
one of the last songs written by denny. it's clearly an attack on african americans who buy expensive sneakers but live on welfare. and i'm not making that accusation. it's unfortunately a stereotype abundant then and today in our society, and within the steely dan culture specifically
@levanyzzuf fagen and becker got denny and skunk to unwittingly sign over the songs they wrote. basically everything from the first three albums was written by denny and skunk, but according to the contract fagen and becker could receive full credit in changing lyrics here and there (which was necessary for their commercial survival, as denny and skunk quite obviously wrote some very racist and pro-confederacy lyrics). denny and skunk's illiteracy allowed fagen and becker to pull a fast one
@newfuckingwave I don't believe that at all. There is no real inconsistency in lyrical content or musical style between their early rock band era and the later post-Dias/Baxter era. I've heard both Becker and Fagen talk about the writing process on Pretzel Logic, and it's pretty clear they wrote everything. Until I see a valid source cited for that claim, I'll say you're full of shit.
@nickelsaarrowads you don't understand how seriously southern men take their dan. it's like next to the civil war in terms of things they are bitter about
@newfuckingwave I'm sorry, but neither Baxter or Dias have ever made such claims. They take no credit for writing the music. There is no reason for me to believe that they harbor pro-Confederacy sentiments either. Dias is from Philadelphia and grew up on Long Island. Baxter is from DC and grew up in Manhattan (where Jimi Hendrix helped get him started in the music business). You're obviously trolling, or you're an idiot.
@levanyzzuf he then moved to the same small alabama town as denny. as for the manhattan part of your story, i suppose he stayed there while visiting denny, but i guarantee you he never lived there. and you call me an idiot while you attempt to tell me that he was a childhood friend of hendrix? what the fuck will you say next, that he went to pre-school with beethoven and grew up listening to records with bach? gimme a fucking break. i've read denny's biography - i advise you do the same
@newfuckingwave Dias has never written an autiobiography and has never lived in Alabama. Nor has Baxter. I'd be interested to see you cite a single source for that information. Since the 70's, Dias has lived in either Los Angeles or New York at various times. Baxter has lived in California since his work with The Doobie Brothers. Your comments would be an astute example of trolling, if they were the least bit funny, but they're not. It basically amounts to slander - which a true fan would not do
@levanyzzuf ....are you kidding me? I HAVE a second generation copy of Denny's biography. I'm willing to prove it. Send me a message for a picture. Until you read the book, don't say what is true and what is not true about Denny. Say what you will about Skunk, but I know Denny's story from the book, and "newfuckingwave" seems to have it pretty much right. The name of it is "Ain't No Mexican: The Denny Dias Story".
@Playjex Don't quit your day job. I know there's a 500 character limit, but I think you could have done better than that. It isn't pronounced "Dee-az" like a Mexican name in the first place.
@rorshakks Glad you're interested. Denny didn't write the book himself. It's a biography by a college professor made of compiled stories and facts that the professor dug up. I'll send you a pic tonight. Sadly, there is little record of it being printed as it is considered very "unofficial" due to it being released to only a select number of people. My friend got a hold of the book and gave it to me knowing that I'm a Dan man myself.
@levanyzzuf Like roshakks said, it IS pronounced like that, but it is only that way because his great-grandfather fled to Mexico after the Civil War and changed the name. They use the Portuguese spelling so they could "blend in" yet not be mistaken as a Mexican when someone read their name. I'll send you a picture later tonight.
@levanyzzuf you're speaking in half-truths. denny was born in philly, but because his father was there to assassinate a civil rights leader. they then returned to alabama where denny remained until his parents decided to send him north to become 'sophisticated'. he went to live with his cousins the wards, yes in hicksville. as for skunk, yes he was born in DC - and lest we forget that DC was located between slave states maryland and deleware during the civil war. (continued in next comment)
Thank You so much for putting this up, the only other versions online are live recordings done recently. Funny thing is,i heard this song playing in a home depot, and it got me looking up Dan after so many years!
The 70s were great and we had Steely Dan.

@newfuckingwave Denny Dias never wrote any Steely Dan songs. Almost all are exclusively by Fagen and Becker.
