It's not even about the physical abilities at this point, though Yamada-San is now old. He has a psychological barrier from this course. you can see this...if you watch most of the Sasuke reruns. I forget which season it was, but he fell off the Warped Wall or Jump Hang and he managed to complete the whole course after he was ousted.
Even the annoucer was like, "Mr. Sasuke, why couldn't you do it when it counted?"
Giving up will only show his weakness taking the easy way out. besides, he did give up once and he decided to come back. It is extremely admirable for him to keep on trying as much as he did. Besides what about all the other people who fell on the very first obstacle? Katsumi Yamada will achieve Ninja Warrior one day.

This is all due to the shoes that he wears. His shoes don't work right on the Jumping Spider. There like pimsoles and pimsoles don't work.
