  • Well... at least I'm glad that these monsters are extinct. :D

  • Fresnel lens, pronounced freynel lens, a really nice thing to keep if you have to scrap it.

  • @randommscience117 thanks for the pronunciation info!, I have 2 of them now :D. 1 42" wide screen and a 54" square.

  • @Aussie50 Awesome!

  • AUSSIE50 i would of loved them bitts mate out of that tv lol. shame ya in australia and im in the uk lol

  • the lens should have a cover over it, water is in between it and the lens, if you clean it be sure to go with the circle so you dont scratch the lens, is like a record. thats if youve fixed the tv ofc

  • well if you cant save the tv keep the fresnel lens and take off the layer of tint that should be taped onto it, they make good solar cookers, check out some of the vids on youtube, i found one yesterday in the trash

  • I have a Toshiba RPTV 40PW8DB and removed the back cover from it and the dust in there is unbelievable caked on. I want to clean all the dust from the circuits. SAFELY! What should i avoid and not touch as i dont fancy touching something and resulting in a shock!

BTW...What's them 4 black plugs with red wires attached to them @ 1:20.

  • @underpantswedgy if its actually caked on to the point of needing to scrape it off I wouldn't touch it unless its causing a problem (cleaning the heat-sinks wouldn't hurt)

avoid touching anything with a thick red lead on it too, residual charge from the CRT's hurts!

vacuuming and brushing may generate static charge and fry things so just use a air duster can from a electronics store.

the black thing splits the 75kV high voltage charge for CRT's, don't touch it if the set is on on.

  • @Aussie50

so that flyback transformer (the black thing) puts out 75kv? how many amps if you know?

  • @zackthegoth not too sure, it would be in the Milli amp or even micro amp range, good for basic experiments but its not kick ass power (75kv @ 1A would be brutal!)

  • @Aussie50 Where do you get that figure from? I have 2 CRT projectors here, and neither of them are nearly that high. 30-40 kV would be a closer bet unless the service manual says otherwise...

Where you see at about 1:30 those 2 STK chips, that is what will more than likely have failed if youve lost control of the convergence.

What is the model number of the tubes and what condition are they in?

  • @redSKORPION50 a few people suggested these run up to 75Kv but I never bothered checking for sure. it does look like a standard TV flyback so 30Kv is more reasonable.

it was the STK's and the resistors that feed them (shorted resistors overloaded and killed them) the set was scrapped ages ago and CRT's got nuked in the microwave for fun :D

I've had 3 sets like this so far and all were scrapped since I already have a 42" Plasma and a 38" LCD to use, and 2 more 42" Plasmas to fix.

  • on this tv. i just got one that have all the fancy bells and whistles, speakers surround sound. and all. but when powered up it powers down after about 5 seconds any idea's on what that could be?

  • @niffer58 nah I've never gotten into proper RPTV repair.

my first guess is power supply failure tho, but there are a number of things that can force a shutdown.

  • What model is this tv?

  • @Acanofalconpunch can't remember, its long gone

  • ya i know what the inside looks like .ill bet you spent years of your life trying to align bad

stk packs and bad tubes ya thats water LOLO

  • nah, allignment is automatic, its just burnt out resistors. maybe STK packs.

  • alignment is automatic? hahahahah

wait till you hit focus with bad packs

the only way to store it is with the right remote

if you havent used the service menu in full and 1080 on this product , you haven't even begun to fix the problems . We have seen dozens of these where high voltage has sawed off the neck of the tube.....good luck. The arrogance and ignorance never fails to amuse me.

  • i can tell you like metallica lol u have the s m dvd and your playing metallica in the background nice tv thought im getting a mitsubishi ws 65515

  • If solder connections okay, then replacement set of the STK convergence modules are about $20.00.

  • Is there any chance i could get a close up pictures of the CRT boards i have the same Tv aim trying to put it back together after someone messed it up thanks

  • Check solder connections on the STK amplifier packs.

These are convergences amplifiers controlled by the D/A outputs of the convergence processor. Very common that the connections fail at the PC board under the heatsink and you lose alignment of the CRTs!

Usually have an hourglass shape to 2 of the three CRTs. One CRT is fixed, but other two are adjustable and use the STK amp packs.

Happened to my Mitsubishi and just needed resoldering.

  • Thanks for the info!

I've seen a bit of info on the STK's in Samsung units failing, I'll resolder it and go from there

unless I can't get the water out of the fresnel lens, in which case its scrap.

  • Speakers sound surprisingly decent in these sets even though they are low cost drivers. In worst scenario, should be able to cut out the speakers with wooden cavities to make a decent set of shop speakers.

  • Have you seen those vids of people melting bottles etc with fresnal lens like this.?

  • lol yep!, that's sorta why I kept it for parts :D

    lots of fun :D

  • Aussie50 did you save any of the other parts that worked? id be in heavin with a busted TV like one of these so many goddies inside. id keep the audio amp if it worked, the speakers, the gun lenses and that large fresnel lens in the screen and anything else I can use. do you have a teardown vid of this TV? id like to know what parts you saved off this tv. Thanks and I subbed.

  • I haven't scrapped it just yet, I just havn't had time to try and repair it.

Your right about hte cool parts though, if i can't fix it I will keep the guns and lenses!

I think the audio amp is integrated into the main PCB and may not be separable :(

  • @Aussie50

That sux about the audio amp integrated into the mainboard. I took apart my old CRT TV b/c it was dying and the remote sensor on it was messed and couldnt change channels and sometimes it would buzz and the screen would be distorted. but I parted it and kept the mainboard and a few other parts. and the audio amp was integrated into the mainboard on my TV. I bought a flat screen TV to replace that old one. 19 inch Sansui HDTV.

  • Here some light..if it's Samsung, scrap it..!

  • yep!, I had another tinker with it and its more trouble than its worth.

  • The Screen is a large fresnell lens, I think.

  • yep! it is!

  • There is 75kV on the anodes of those tubes...

  • keep as much parts as possible especially that bog EHT Transformer

  • the EHT is the same as a monitor EHT, but I'll keep the tubes and lens

  • hmmm idk tnt ? fire ? nuke ? lol

  • I'm thinking bonfire :D

  • yup thats the safe one BE SAFE ! lol

  • turn it on and set fire to it.lol

  • that would be fun :D

  • nab that fresnel lens!!!

  • yeah I'm keeping that :D

  • might as well scrap it or try to fix it i seen a lot getting thrown out now days

  • yeah, I'l check hard rubbish for one tomorrow, get spare parts :D
