    This segment speaks of a migration towards the South as opposed to away from it. This migration was primarily from the East coast to the South. Dr. Padgett then goes on to state that after the freeing of slaves and the reconstruction era there were about 5 million African Americans in the United States in which most of them lived in the South.

  • This segment of the video enlightened me on the concept that as slavery ended Reconstruction occurred and as a result of this as many as 5 million blacks had migrated to the U.S. They were, at this time, moving westward and to the southern states where cotton production was becoming plentiful. I didn't know that there were as many as 60,00 blacks here in Nashville 100 years ago, however the population of blacks today is half this number. There were whats known as free towns in the west as well.
