@thetwanger84 Well if you listen to the lyrics very closely and especially if you can relate, then this song can be depressing. :X Well, melancholy, at least.
anybody who puts yootha joyce and charles hawtrey on an album cover as well as the lyric'' writing frightening verse to a buck toothed girl in luxembourg'' gets my vote every time. genius.
Apart from anything else such as the historical context of the Cold War in the 1980s, Bomb makes sense in the song because it is referring to extreme shyness and embarrassment only being overcome by imminent nuclear destruction. It is a variant of 'what would you do if you only had three minutes to live'. Throw caution to the wind I hope!
@rcurly11 Think with me. You need to enjoy life, the things you do now ain't gonna affect on the important things of your future, like your job or who you'll marry with, those are important things, now, it's just a "training" and it's a very, VERY superficial time. I used to be shy, now i do whatever i want. Do it too, you like someone? go there and tell the person! This moment will never, ever come back, and i bet you don't want to have regrets when you remember of it in the future. :)
@goawayandmakemyday Well, Morrissey's lyrics are often cryptic, so no one (except Morrissey himself) can be sure of their meaning. He's always liked to let people find the meaning by themselves, I guess.
@R50605 It is bomb, the implication is that if people cant love each other then the ultimate consequence of that is conflict, in the eighties it was assumed this would be world conflagration.
@R50605 It could, but it could also be about human nature. "If it's not love, it's the bomb that will bring us together", this could be talking about the nuclear crisis of the 80s; if it's not love, humans will love each other at end, just before their deaths.
The Smiths are my favourite band and I've just recorded an acoustic version of This Charming Man, please check it out on my profile and let me know what you think!
As someone who grew up in the UK in the 80s, I can tell you that "The Bomb" was understood to mean nuclear war. I don't know what @Timmybear is smoking.
"Take me out tonight take me any where i dont care, driving in your car i never want to go home and if a double decker bus crashes into us to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die..." -The Smiths, this is real music
to be honest 'the bomb' makes more sense since it was the eighties and the threat of a nuclear attack was on everyone's minds. as much as everyone would like it to the 'bong' just isn't as interesting, relevant, or witty.
Well.....I guess it's handy to bring together a whole bunch of people just so you can just bomb 'em up in one go instead of wasting maney and precious time chasing down each person and setting up bombs in their cars, houses, etc.
@jrmetmoi - I believe the intent of the line about 'if it's not love, then it's the bomb that will bring us together' is that if we don't learn to get along, destruction is the only alternative. That was certainly something I used to say quite often in the seventies and eighties when I met people who would constantly say that, for example, men would never change. I always found it odd that they would say this to me, and in search of agreement, since I AM a man (mostly).
in the video to this one of the chaps has a bomb in his hands the bomb meaning he drops the bomb and even though he cant give his love to her this makes them closer , its up to the listener to decide what the bomb is!
The 12-inch version of this was the first Smiths record I ever bought. I was visiting my auntie in St John's, Newfoundland, and I visited the best local record store. No regrets. Absolutely no regrets.
oh gosh beautiful song that i can relate to!! "shyness can stop u from doing all the things you'd like to. so if there's something you'd like to try, ask me, i wont say no, how could i?" ---> i wish i had one such person!!

I had no idea that this is what Colin Meloy was covering in his solo album, Colin Meloy Sings Live! It kinda did remind me of The Smiths though. I need to get to know ALL their songs! They're amazing!!
@CoQ10z Firstly, I'm not a blonde, you silly person. And I could have said far worse than "silly," this is the internet after all. I already said I felt foolish, so there's no need to call me a buffoon. @captainjotaro There are great songs from other parts of Britain. Britian = Scotland, England, Wales. United Kingdom = Scotland, England, Wales & Northern Ireland.
