I agree, you don't have to wait, need to act in preventive manner, but instead of the sheen kick why not to do a punch in the face, when you move closer to avoid knife's arch? One hand repels the attacker's hand with the knife, your other hand flies straight into his face? This way you repel and counter attack at the same time.

I would also extend my repelling hand about 60-80 degrees to the left, in case I move too late on the knife, so that the blade wouldn't hit my head or shoulder.
