The insecurity of the Bolan fans is very amusing. I've seen him do it live and it sounds pretty much like this. Yes, but no one else can do the song properly, they miss the nuances, Bolan was sublime, blah, blah, blah. No offense, but the song isn't that special that it needs to be placed on a pedestal. Bong a gong, get it on...profound. Its just a fun, energetic song. Sounds like a good live cover to me, although too bad it cuts off.
Denis and Hanging on the telephone (brilliant) were covers as well to my knowledge, but they were brilliant and the origionals were, how do you say it, absolutely shite.
i always thought this song was so simple and straightforward that it could be universally covered by anyone and it would sound good but no, not at all. i'm yet to find a single good cover version of this, but the original is just fantastic.
I love this cover...Blondie always did great cover songs during their live shows. I have a Blondie Live cd that has a "Bang A Gong"/"Funtime" performance from 1980 and it goes on for 15 minutes!
what a fantastic video..that was awesome..great version by blondie[she's a babe],thanks honey that was top class as always...marc's angel back with a bang...
Thanks Honey, I'm glad you get it (on)I do love this version and there is another great live version by and forgive the spelling shasphers sister (I never studied him at school). Kev
Do you know the date? Johnny Thunders played live with Blondie and played this song live with them

(11) My Obsession-Good and raw, but boy did that tick off some Stones's fans.
(12) Jetboy-Awesome. Performed with Johnny Thunders.
(13) Femme Fatale-Never freaking heard it but I'm told she did a good Nico impression.
(14) Little GTO-Who cares; she was being backed up by the Beach Boys.
(15) Anything during The Hunter tour-Way too depressing to think about. Glad they cleaned up.

She's covered
1) The Beatles-awful
2) Johnny Cash-Okay
3) T-Rex-Okay
4) David Bowie-Good
Why would a band with such great songs need to do inferior covers of the UK's only 3 great artists ever?
BigBulgeCheeks 1 year ago
I'll try my hand at grading Blondie covers. I have different expectations for live covers, which I judge based on rawness and energy, but anyway:
(1) Out In The Streets-Great. Works nicely w/o the wall of sound.
(2) I Feel Love-Great. Fits her voice.
(3) Moonlight Drive (Old Waldorf (1977)-Great. That whole show was very good.
(7) Heroes-Good. (started soaring at the end)
(8) Funtime-Good.
(9) Bang a Gong (multiple)-Good. Should run 5-7 minutes.
(10) Ring of Fire-Passable. It's Cash's song.

This is crap, although I really dig Blondie.
Debbie could be doing something more productive with her mouth, rather than this, with me and Mr. Helmet Johnson,a lot.
I yearn to goo that face and up into her hair, even after all this time. AND I don't care what anybody thinks about that.

Okay, I LOVE Debby Harry - but this is even worse than when Peter Doherty butchered Children of the Revolution. And I love Peter, too.

Just cause Debbie Harry is hot, doesn't mean she can butcher a classic and get away with it.
