@MedabotMetabee I would like to know what universe where Starscream is female, there is a female Starscream clone in Animated but that is as far as it go, granted I have not read much of the Japanese manga, some of the universes described there is insane, just to mention one Transformers Kiss Players, which is basically soft core lolli porn and giant robots, so who knows in some of those, but in all Western at least official continuities Starscream is male.

I think it is his voice and his slender body form that make people think he is feminine, however there is a reason for his body shape, he is an airplane, he needs to be lightweight. As for the voice, yes I can see that, it is rare that a male character is given such a high pitched voice, but then Starscream is a robot. Also expert for that one translation I mentioned all his voice actors have been male.

@Venefica82 french dub of g1 (either series or movie, i can't say anymore). they thought starscream was supposed to be female and he's referred to as 'she' by all the other decepticons. so, yes, he is female in the french g1 series/movie.

A character is made in the minds of those that create him or her, and it is that vision that defines a character, not translation errors. Also the French translation bases itself only on Starscream's voice nothing else, it is like saying any cartoon character with a high pitch voice is female if we are to follow that logic.

In the French cartoon series Les Mondes Engloutis there is a female character named Arkana, she is a magic wielding golem (more or less it is complicated.) she have a deep, melodious voice and she looks rather hermaphroditic, I guess it would be okey to make her male then, or...

Hell a dubbing is meant to be translating a work into whatever language, it is not meant to be a way to change the original, to say that a dubbed version have nothing to do with the original is insane, it is like if I took War and Peace, translated it into Norwegian and made it to be about vampires and space aliens and then said oh but it is ok, it have nothing to do with the original version.

That Hasbro could have wanted to make Starscream as girl originally I do not know, I have never heard the rumor, however the French making him a woman was because of his voice being so high pitched.

@StellarCry Well I think the difference could be that in the comic books the transformers where created by Primus, a machine God, but in the cartoon they where created by an alien race so they could have been given genders to imitate their creators, not that gender would mean much to them, but their creators could have tried to imitate organic creatures. And no gender have noting to do with their reproduction, that is established.
