In the 1940's people never swore, when they got shot they just rolled around but no blood would ever come out. Saving private ryan really showed these films up. The war was not about John wayne type heroes, it was harsh and horrific. Private ryan was the first film to ever take the crap hollywood gloss off of the genre.

Back when these John Wayne style movies were coming out, they were being used to pump people up about the war. Get people to join the army. If they showed the heroes getting killed and blown up in church steeples, not many people would want to help the war efforts. Saving Private Ryan was created in a period where the type of fighting portrayed is history. It's just good cinematography now.
