I love it when they´re in the car, and she´s "stuffing herself" with chips and a soda and she says; You know what I´d like for lunch (assuming that she´s having breakfast there and then)? A big plate of french fries and a malt! That was before America got fat..
Much better than the remake. This blonde girl has such a young, pretty, sweet face. You really do believe she is 14 - IN SPITE OF THE HAIR AND PADDED BRA. In the remake, the rather plain ginger haired girl looks about 16, 18 in some shots. The remake would have rocked w/ Irons if they had just casst a better Lo. Too bad. Maybe they'll remake it again.
OK, what does Lolita say (in Donald Duck voice) at 4:00 as she heads for the stairs, to which Shelley Winters replies "I heard that! ?? Great movie, quite daring for 1962.
Charlotte gets on my nerve with her desperation and forwardness towards Humbert and the way she imposed on Clare Quilty. She is really not a good mother and neglects Lolita but Lolita is a case all her own lol. Never seen a 13 year old this mature (but maybe we all have by now!). Thanks again for the post.
The mother in this one does such a better job than in the 1997 version, in my opinion. She's so desperate and you just want to slap her across the face; the mother in the 1997 version felt too wishy-washy to actually get a rise out of me.
Great actors in a great movie by the one and only Stanley K. Peter Sellers is brilliant as always. I agree 100% with csapaugh's comment below, that is that that not just the scenes between Charlotte and Humbert, but the film taken as a whole, is more subtle than Lyne's version. Kubrick is simply unbeatable. By the way, what happened to part 1?
This original version is more comical, more light-hearted and even more "naughty" in the playful, double-entendre sense. When it's over you feel like you've seen a cute movie about a foolish, older man who gets played and rolled by a young girl. The 1997 version, however, is darker, more serious and ultimately, more disturbing. While it too has some light moments, the net result is that you leave the theater feeling uncomfortable and not quite sure if you had a good time or not.
Why would you try to entice someone who doesn't dance by dancing? It does illustrate well how up her own ass the Charlotte Hayes character is supposed to be, though.
I still can't get over how much they managed to play down Shelley Winters looks in this film.
i cant believe ppl watched this and thought it was good, the acting is so poor. its bland and has no depth to it like the 1997 version. they all talk in the same sort of voice as well... i know the 1997 version wasnt perfect but it is the best adaption of the book that could possibly be done. and jeremy irons owns humbert!!
The interesting thing about this film is that there are many parts where, if you black out the video and only listen to what they say, you get a very different impression of what they're talking about...like in the next part number 5where Lolita says something like "I'm gonna give you a reward...move your head back, now open your mouth, OPEN IT! Now take a bite...!
Sue Lyon is gorgeous... which is simply why she does not fit the role of Lolita at all. Lolita, a s a Nymphet, was hardly considered beautiful by conventional means. This is why she was a Nymphet, and why Humbert was drawn to her so. Also, despite her age, Sue Lyon looks far older (i understand that it had to be that way for the film to be made however). Lolita is supposed to be four foot ten with a tanned complexion and a short brown bob.
Oh stop saying that about Sue Lyon! She does it like 20 times better than Dominique Swain, definitely more naïve. Dominique's Lolita feels as if she plans her actions whenever Humbert is concercened. However, when reading the book I felt this spontaneity in Lolita I felt when watching Lyon's performance. She may look older but come on! The fact Swain has bigger breasts is far more conditioning.
Peter Sellers is awesome but I can't get over Jeremy Irons' Humbert.
I like how they explain what a "nymphet" is. You know, Humbert writes about how Lolita is the perfect Nymphet but the movie [so far] doesn't explain his fascination for younger girls at all. D:
This is stupid, but i'm bored1.)say the name of the boy/girl u like 2 times 2.)now say the name of your bestfriend 5 times to urself 3.)now post this onto 5 videos and then press f8 and then ur crushes name will APPEAR ON THE SCREEN

It's horrid when a parent is jealous of his/her child's youth. There's nothing wrong with being a kid at heart but Lo's mom is just plain nuts!

I agree new version is way much better than this one, Lolita here acts more mature rather than a child like in a new version.
