My zx1 has been very good with batteries. Which firmware did your camera come with? Perhaps the newest revision uses more power. For editing, I use Cyberlink Powerdirector 8. It can handle .movs natively, has tons of features, and is idiot-proof (I produced my first video without even reading the instructions). The zx1 does need some form of image stabilization, though. It's more about the movement of the hand and the shape/size of the camera than any auto-focus issues. Try a stedicam.
@commadotcom Hey thanks for the comment, my camera has firmware version 1.05 but the battery issue likely comes from my use of the highest recording quality (HD60). I looked into that software you mention and will likely purchase it if I do not find any others I like. But like I said I appreciate your input. :)
