  • Comic genius.........think Mel Brooks, Sid Caesar Zero Mostel Oliver. Puccini not Scarlatti .....DaPonte not Bach.

  • Great patter! But he's just too likeable. It's so wrong!

  • excellent performance

  • genius?!?!?! mozart and chopin are genius, this is not genius!!!

  • Great performance-- the soloist is really excellent. This is probably the most difficult patter songs to sing up to speed and this guy nailed it. Probably one of my favorite amateur performances of the song.

  • Great Opera this! And, very topical too. A bod who lives in the City of London, dealing out potions and conspires with an Officer of the Guards regiment and the local vicar to get an entire village stoned - with hilarious results!!! And this was written back in the 1870's. Makes you wonder doesn't it? But just where would we be without the genius of Gilbert & Sullivan? Life wouldn't be such a boon without their songs and tunes to cheer us.

  • Im playing in the orchestra for a production of this in Sanford right now. I love this song lol

  • Wow! The granddaddy of rap music!

  • simple superb example! just what i was looking for

  • Simmery Axe = St Mary Axe, a road in London. The Gherkin is in fact in St Mary Axe. Trivia!

  • I just love the song. The orchestra may be off in balance in sound quality here, but it has nice blend as it is.

  • Excellent performance. As I was there on the night I can testify that the sound quality on this clip does not do justice to the balance, between orchestra and soloist. You could here him clearly from the theatre bar... I should know, I was sitting there!

  • My name is John Wellington Wells

I'm a dealer in magic and spells

    In blessings and curses

    And ever-filled purses

    In prophecies, witches, and knells

If you want a proud foe to "make tracks"

If you'd melt a rich uncle in wax

You've but to look in on our resident Djinn

    Number seventy, Simmery Axe

    Absolutely love it!!!

  • Love this song! The Savoy recording of it I have treats the "Oooooh" very operaticly. This comes off very naturally. Love it!
